This is the Sports Mashup video (worth 3 1/2 points) I created by taking video clips of some of my favorite moments in sports and splicing them together in iMovie. These aren’t the “typical” sports clips showing professional athletes making incredible catches, dunks, or touchdowns. Instead, these clips show amazing moments in sports where people put winning and pride aside in order to make something incredible happen for someone else with the very last clip being one in which my favorite athlete shows that he is really starting to understand what it truly means to be part of a team and that a game isn’t all about winning.
I began the process of making this video by downloading clips from You Tube of events that I recalled seeing in various news stories over the years. I then found pictures of different quotes that seemed related to the theme of the video and set them to the same background so that they would match the pictures and texts that would be at the front and end of the video. Once I put all of that together in the order I wanted in iMovie, I decided to add another tear jerking element. At the end of The Blind Side movie, a song played by Five for Fighting called “Chances”. I’ve seen The Blind Side at least 10 times but at the end of the movie when they have the slideshow of pictures playing to this song I find myself tearing up so it just seemed like the natural song to add to my video. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. I think I’m finally started to get the hang of this iMovie thing.
Ah animated music videos. Brings back memories of my early teenage years. When I saw this was a possible video assignment, I just had to go for it. I used scenes from The Legend of Korra along with the brilliant song “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning” by Smashing Pumpkins. This song just seems to give off this vibe of confusion and ominous tidings, and I tried to get that across with the chaos of the video. I also juggled the emotions of despair and recovery towards the end.
VLC media player has a wonderful function to record short video segments and export them into their own separate clips. I used Windows Movie Maker to edit the scenes, trimming them and arranging them into a suitable order. I also used it to import the song I chose. Most of the process was just tedious editing of scenes, making sure the transitions between them flowed well, and nothing looked choppy. It was fun trying to get the audio and video this mesh together. Hope you enjoy it! I put a lot of emotion into this.

I can thank my procrastination in other classes for my week of production in this class. Turns out that my avoidance of paper writing turned into doing extra work in DS106. I justified this by telling myself that I was just making up for those couple of weeks where I just didn’t quite get everything done. That’s the story I’m going with at least. With that being said, let me tell you about the work I got done over the last 7 days.
I completed three Daily Creates this week instead of the two assigned. “What is it?“, “Hung Out to Dry“, and “Share Your Best Sleepy Shot” were the three creates that I picked to do. With as cold as it is today I wish that it was warm enough to have those beach clothes in my “Hung Out to Dry” picture to hanging out on the line.
I submitted two “Inspires” to the DS106 website and blogged about them. Brittnay’s “Unity” and Ien’s “Wire 106 Epigraph” were my two sources of inspiration this week. I also blogged about why “Unity” and “Wire 106 Epigraph” inspired me.
My favorite assignments of the week were the Video Assignments. I found a video on You Tube that showed me how to download videos from You Tube. Once I had the video clips I wanted it was just a matter of playing around with iMovie (which I had never used before) and then combining my clips together and putting them to music. I think that iMovie might be my favorite app ever. I ended up doing 13 1/2 stars worth of assignments which was 3 1/2 stars over the required 10 stars. My son, his teammates, and my family were the subjects in “My Boy of Fall” music video worth 5 stars. My 3.8 pound dog, slow motion video taken with my iPhone, and Lorde were the stars of my “Crash Will Never Be a Royal” video worth 3 1/2 stars. The last video I made was a mashup of clips from Homicide: Life in the Street and The Wire, both of which were filmed in Baltimore. I even found a clip from Homicide that the late Robin Williams was in which I thought was pretty cool. I named the final product “A Mashup of Baltimore” and the trailer mashup assignment was worth 5 stars. I think I enjoyed the video assignments more than audio assignments because I hate the sound of my voice…lol.
I even managed to submit a Video Assignment to the Assignment Bank. I named it the Complete Package and included a video example that I made when I submitted my idea to the website. I made it worth 4 stars but it could easily be worth 5. The only requirements that I had for the assignment is that it had to be clips from a show that had already completed its run on tv and it had to be a minimum of two minutes long. I figured that it is always good to have an excuse to binge watch a television series.
I had a lovely discussion on Friday around 1:30ish with our fearless leaders about episode 10 of Season 3 of The Wire. Bob Dylan and reformation were hot topics and we all found it funny that it was titled “The Reformation” when the war isn’t considered over as of yet and reformations usually happen after something is over as a rebuilding effort. All kinds of irony going on in that episode.
I did a little house keeping on my blog this week by creating two more menu items/categories (Inspired & Video Assignments) to file my blog posts under. I also noticed that there was an update for the Jetpack plugin so I went ahead and took care of that update as well.
I was able to see quite a bit of the work that my classmates did as well and comment on it. Work done by Chris, Mariana, Nicky, Stefanie, Brittnay, Alison, Ien, Melinda, Maggie, & Lauren were commented on by me. I really do enjoy seeing the different ideas that we all come up with.
I think that about covers everything that I got done for week 10 in DS106. I’ll be in a rush to get my papers finished for two of my other classes but I had art to make, dammit!!
This assignment was a lot of fun but took a lot of time. For the “He Could Go All The Way, Homerun” assignment I had to take highlights from one sport and then take commentating from another sport and mash them together. I wanted to choose two sports that would at least make some sense together. I decided to use NHL highlights and commentating from Soccer from around the world. A lot of the soccer commentators get really into each goal and are pretty funny. First I found some NHL highlights and put those together into a video. That part was pretty easy. The hard part was finding commentating that would work with the hockey goals. Trying to matchup the audio with the video was EXTREMELY HARD. It took a lot of time of trying different audio clips with different video clips and making sure they fit and made sense. Using windows live movie maker I was able to do all of this together. Editing the sound in windows live movie maker was challenging because once you started to cut stuff and move it around it tended to affect other clips by shortening them and moving them. They did not stay locked on the places I put them. But after a lot of time I was able to get it to work out well. I am happy with my final outcome. I hope you all enjoy it.
This was one of my favorite assignments to create. I (along with fellow ds106er Kisha) am on the board for the UMW consent campaign. There’s information about it in the video and you all should come take the pledge to always have consent!
I built this assignment around the “Let’s Talk About Consent” video–watch the full video here. When I was listening to it, the riff off scene from Pitch Perfect popped into my head; the one where they sing “Let’s Talk About Sex.” So I decided to do a mashup of it. I recorded my friend singing the word “consent” and added it into the riff off. I then added the part at the end using the title slides in Movie Maker.
As Colonel Nathan R. Jessup in the movie A Few Good Men once said, “You can’t handle the truth!” I love the quote because of one main reason. It describes my favorite basketball player Paul Pierces nickname “The Truth”. So I did this video assignment and it was fun for me. This assignment was worth 5 stars. I created a trailer for The Wire of so far the episodes we had watch. If I chance to remake it, I would because I’ve been quite busy so far coming back home to take care of my mom and surprising my two little cousins that I did today for halloween.
Anyways, I used Windows Movie Maker to create my video. I downloaded the video from media hub to do this and it was fun. I had lots of fun doing this. I did a lot of clipping and I did the videos mostly from this weeks episode. I got a couple clips from different episodes from previous seasons. I added two audio clips which everyone had heard already. Here are the questions I have to ask:
1) What two audio clips are playing?
2) The first audio clip, everyone is able to recognize but the question is which one is it? (Hint: it’s from this weeks episodes that we had to watch)
So mainly all I did was again using Windows Movie Maker and did a lot of clipping from the episodes. Oh I got a video off the youtube which was the only perfect one I found to use for my video. Hope you guys really enjoy it! Here it is!
For the second of the two optional audio assignments I chose to do So and So’s Greatest Hits worth three stars. When I saw that one I knew I had to do because there are plenty of bands and artists that I could make a five song mash up for. I thought long and hard and decided to choose one of my favorite bands System of a Down. I have been a big fan of theirs for a long while and I enjoy listening to their stuff quite a bit. I still have yet to see them in concert but now that they have reunited maybe I have a better chance at that happening. I thought that a mash up of a System of a Down would be extra appropriate considering their reunion occurred last year or so and am a fan of just about all their music so it would be perfect for me to choose them. I still remember the first time I heard the band, I was probably in 8th grade and I saw the music video for Hyponotize on MTV2 when I got back from school, it was so awesome and I have loved the band ever since that day.
I chose to compile the songs:
This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I’m On This Song
I wanted to make sure that I not only chose some of my favorite songs but also songs that would flow well with each other. I also wanted the Mash up to sound like it had a proper ending so I made sure that I used the end of the song of the Toxicity rather a part from the beginning or middle.
Unfortunately I was having issues trying to use a youtube to WAV file converter so I had to record each segment from each song that I wanted from Spotify. Luckily Spotify has all of their music so it was not much of an issue. I made sure to have the sound an appropriate level for recording and recorded each song into Audacity. Once I got the songs into there I fiddled around with the decibels to make sure that none of them were too loud and also cut out any unnecessary sounds that occurred before the song such as the clicking sounded from my track pad, etc. It was pretty simple but I would have preferred if I had been able to get the converter to work because the sound quality would be better, but overall I think that it sounds good and like the way that it came out.
Original Assignment (3 stars)
I am a huge fan of Linkin Park and there are a bunch of other great songs by them but these five are just personal favorites of mine. Here are the songs in order of how I set it up, followed by the album from which the song came from:
I used Audacity to help create this mashup and I basically followed this tutorial on how to cut and paste songs into one consecutive track. I also used this free, youtube to .wav converter to help me convert the songs I selected from youtube into .wav files so that it was compatible with Audacity.
I did snippets of each song except the last one, “One Step Closer”, because I believed the last one is the most awesome one out of the list and one of my personal favorite songs. I began listening to this band at around 2001, which I think was the point where their worldwide success began to come to fruition. I started by listening to their very first album, Hybrid Theory (hence why I chose two songs from that album out of the five for this mashup), which blew me away due to the style and pace of their music. By 2003, their second studio album, Metora had released, and by then, I was completely sold as them being my favorite band at that time. The thing that really fascinated me the most was the transition from those two albums, as Hybrid Theory had a more rock’ish element to it while Meteora had retained some of the “nu-metal” elements and added some distinct instrumentals to it as well.
I was unable to upload to soundcloud due to the copyright rules, so I basically saved my Audacity mashup as another .wav file and uploaded as such:
Hope you guys enjoy!
Song Mash-Up Assignment Worth 3 1/2 stars
For my last audio assignment I had to mash up two distinct songs. I thought what better place to start then children’s nursery rhymes and songs. So I picked the most up beat song which was
London Bridge is Falling Down (original song)
The song above war originally too slow and I needed it to match the techno song “Satisfaction,” by the techno artist Benny Benassi.
I retrieved both songs from MP3 skull by doing a search.
Editing Process:
For both of these songs I had to do some editing. First I shortened the MP3 download for “Satisfaction,” because London bridge rhyme is nothing but repetitive language and lyrics as is the techno beat that I choose. In addition, the original London Bridge song I downloaded was too slow and too folksy sounding so to make it funky, I sped up the speed of the song in Audacity editing software to give it a chipmunk like sound to it and to match the techno music. Thus resulting in London Bridge – Techno Version.
