Animated Music Video

Animated Music Video

Take a favorite cartoon or anime like show, take some clips, mash them together and add music to it. Try to pick out a specific theme in your clips that follow the theme of the music. Keep an eye out for changes in the music and plan your clips accordingly.
For examples check out youtube and type in “AMV”, or look at this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8vvTQDrPec

This is a 4 star assignment

I chose to do this assignment because I always have loved watching animated movies and TV shows.  Animation has really come a long way since really early animations.  There has been more that go into them, such as much vivid color and more realistic looking people. For this assignment I am using clips from the TV show the Powerpuff Girls.  When I was a kid I loved the Powerpuff Girls.  This was my favorite show on Cartoon Network, when I watched cartoon network.  Looking back on the animation of the Powerpuff Girls has really improved since their very first episode.  The color became more vivid and the animations became clearer.  I really liked watching the Powerpuff Girls because they were the first show I watched where there was a heroine (well in this case 3 heroine’s) than just heroes.  This show really showed that girls can do anything that they can put their mind to.  For my animated music video I am going to be taking clips from the Powerpuff Girl episode called the Rowdy Ruff Boys.  This episode is about a new group of super villains in the Town of Towns-ville that are boy versions of the Power Puff Girls.  They think they’re better and want to destroy the Powerpuff Girls. In the end though they are defeated.  I found a two part episode on YouTube and downloaded to my computer as an MP4 file using PwnYoube.  Here are the links to the episode I found.  For this assignment I used MPEG stream clip to cut out certain clips from the episode.  (I feel really comfortable using MPEG stream clip now :) ).

For the music part of this assignment I was looking through songs that I thought would go really well for what I want the message in my animated music video to portray.  Originally I wanted to use the song Rolling in the Deep by ADELE , but then I decided that the lyrics didn’t give the message I wanted.  The message I want this video to portray is that all girls can do anything they want, even if boys don’t think they can.  The song I decided to use is called Girls Can Too by Play.  I used to listen to this song a lot when I was younger because my friend gave me a Play CD once.  This song really conveys the message that girls can do anything that boys can do.  And it’s also about following your dreams as well.  For this assignment I didn’t realize how much time it would take to get clips and edit clips to fit the lyrics of the song, but it was worth it in the end.  I’m happy with how this video came out.

2 examples of other students work:  I had fun reviewing two different peoples work on this assignment.  It helped me better focus on what I want my animated music video to look like.  These reviews were taken from my pre production post that I did last week. (I thought since I already reviewed them I can just paste them in here).

1. Old Squirrel Cartoon: I really liked this music video for this cartoon.  I have never watched this old Squirrel Cartoon before but  I have to say the song Promiscuous Girl by Nelly Furtado and Timberland went really well with what was happening in the cartoon.  I like how this person edited some of the clip to include the sound from the cartoon, while most of what you heard was the music playing.

2.  Phineas and Ferb: I picked this one to review because I have heard of the show Phineas and Ferb and watched a few of the episodes when I was younger. I like how in this post the user showed us how they made the video.  This person also included introduction text that told me what the video was called, and this person also included a credit at the end that cited their sources.  I liked how the images went with the lyrics in the song, but I thought the point of this assignment was to make an animated music video with actual clips from the cartoon.  With that said the clips were well put together, and I enjoyed watching this cartoon music video.

Below is my embedded version of my animated music video:

As always feedback is appreciated.  I would love to know what you think and what I can improve on for my next few assignments that I have to do for this week.

Return to the Silent Era- 50 First Dates

When I first came across this assignment, Return to the Silent Era, I didn’t want anything to do with it.  It looked really difficult, first choosing the movie, then figuring out how to edit the media so it looks old, and then adding title cards to display what the characters are saying. I passed the assignment and kept looking for another fun looking assignment to do.  While I was looking for another one to complete a thought came to my mind about doing 50 First Dates as the movie and maybe somehow mashing the song Beat Back Love by Jaron and the Long Road to Love, to create a silent era movie. I went onto youtube and found a trailer for the movie 50 First Dates and downloaded it onto my computer, using PwnYouTube to convert it to HQ MP4.

I then opened the movie clip in iMovie and started to play around with the effects. I first selected the whole clip then clicked on the inspector button where I changed the video setting to antique. I then went to the audio section in the inspector button region and turned the volume all the way down to 0% to eliminate the clip noise. I then watch the video and right clicked on the areas where I wanted to split the clip and then added in a text slide. I added a text slide by clicking on the button with a T on the right hand side of the screen. I added multiple clip slides through out the movie, helping the viewers to understand what was going on. I made sure not to put too many text slides into the movie, because I wanted to viewer to come up with some of their own assumptions when watching it. Once I completed adding the text slides I clicked on the button with the musical note and found the song Beat Back Love by Jaron and the Long Road to Love. I dragged the song behind the video and watched the video to see how well it correlated. It ended up correlating well without me having to edit the music. I then went to the share button at the top and exported it. I pulled up youtube and uploaded it onto you tube with the tags VideoAssignments, VideoAssignments376 and ds106.

Most silent movies use music without words, typically an orchestra was present at the showing of the movie and would play music as the movie played.  I thought by using a song with words that it would enhance the meaning of the movie a little more.  The song is about no matter how much you try to ignore someone or push someone away, there will always be someone that loves and cares for you.  The song related to the movie because Lucy, maybe not on purpose, would push Henry away, yet Henry always cared and was in love with her.  I chose this movie to place in an old time era, because the story is about how this guy is fighting for a woman he loves, which i feel is a traditional way of dating. Compared to society now, where I feel there is more promiscuity and it’s rare to find the perfect guy, this movie shows that there are still guys out there that have the old fashioned dating techniques.  WIth the movie portraying old fashion ways of a guy winning a girl over, i thought it would be perfect to put it into an old time era.

Return to the Silent Era (5 Stars)
The dawn of cinema had no audio; silent movies created an atmosphere with music and the use of cue cards. Take a 3-5 minute trailer of a modern movie and render it in the form os the silent era- convert to black and white, add effects to make it look antiquated, replace the audio with a musical sound track, and add title cards for the dialogue. As a prime example, see Silent Star Wars.

One of the best sources for music is Incompetech or the Internet Archive. For the title cards, try a google image search

2 Examples by other people are shown below….

Silent She’s the Man

Return of the (Almost) Silent Mean Girls

Both of these examples that I watched seeemed to fulfill the Silent Era movie requirements. I like the music that was used for the She’s the Man silent era remake, along with the placement of the script both above and below the movie clip. For the Mean Girls silent era remake I liked how the clip was sped up a bit and that the creator went outside the box and had parts where the characters’ were portrayed. I did find it difficult at times to read the script that was being used for the silent era movie, and I feel like the movie could have been a little more black and white in color. Overall though, the creators of both the silent era movie remakes did a good job and it was cool watching what they created.

2 Stars- Welcome to McDumbass

This is… just awful.  Ok, I did the assignment “May I take your order” that was worth 2 stars.  We were supposed to record an original conversation of us ordering from McDonalds with a faked accent.  For mine, I chose a poorly performed southern/hick accent.  It’s not quite Georgia, but it sounds a lot like my buddy Kenny’s voice does and I certainly consider him a redneck.  Of course, it didn’t actually sound very good and I quickly learned that I can’t do accents.  I recorded it using Easy Voice Recorder app on my android phone since the microphone on my computer is broken.  From there, I edited out that poorly performed (or exceptionally bad) parts from my order using audacity.  I wanted to seem difficult and ill-informed about what McDonald’s has (i.e. the cheeseburger-hamburger confusion).

10/10 Stars done.  I should take this space to apologize for not having the Shining assignment done.  I wanted to perform the 4 star “Dialogue Mashup” assignment with Jack Nicholson’s famous all work and no play makes jack a dull boy speech.

I had cut all of his parts and was going to have him converse with someone else… but I had the worse writer’s block and couldn’t think of a film that would have parts that would match well with his lines.  I will be uploading my unfinished work to the phonar drop box though! If you do complete the assignment, please let me know.  I’d love to hear it and I think it could be amazing.

A migraine in two minutes

Although I had more intense, intimate stories I could have used for the Life In Two Minutes assignment, this was the only one I was comfortable putting out there. It shows, too–everything from the My Life Is True project, which was the assignment’s inspiration, hits a lot harder. I hope that at the very least people who have suffered from migraines can relate to this, though.

At first, I was certain that  this assignment would be easy; oh, spend two minutes talking about my weird, wonky, fairly storied life? Sure, I do that all the time! Then I realized that the majority of Big Important Things I’ve gone through aren’t stories I’m entirely willing to share with this class, or the internet as a whole—at least not without an alias to hide behind. Weird how that works, isn’t it?

Eventually, after writing out one very personal story and ditching it (three times), attempting to write something about Wilfrid Owen and his relationship with Siegfried Sassoon and failing to get any research cobbled together on the history of women in insane asylums, I wrote up a short piece about having migraines.

I’ve discovered that (again, thank you Ira Glass) the biggest component to a successful radio ANYTHING is a good script. You can’t just ad-lib this stuff, it has to have structure and thought behind it or it won’t work. That’s one of the main reasons “This American Life” is so successful—the writing is EXCELLENT. I don’t think mine compares, not by a long shot, but at the very least it tells a coherent story. It’s got a beginning, a middle and an end. Somebody could hear it with no context and understand it, which makes it at least moderately successful in my book.

I also thought this assignment wouldn’t utilize much in the way of audio editing skills since I didn’t have to splice in any sound effects or background music. WRONG AGAIN! Turns out when you record three minutes of audio, finding a full minute to cut out is pretty difficult. This led to an unexpected and rather annoying effect in the final edit: there aren’t any significant pauses in the recording. Turns out that when humans talk, they pause sometimes to add emphasis, breathe, indicate a change of subject, that sort of thing. The tempo of my final story sounds rather stilted and unnatural because I had to cut the majority of the natural pauses to fit in all the stuff I wanted to say.

Overall, I’d like to go back and edit what I wrote in order to make that more concise. It’d make the audio sound better if I had more room for pauses and breath, rather than mashing everything together for the sake of saying ALL the things. Brevity has never been my strong suit, though, and I’m at least glad I figured out a way to do this assignment in the end; it’s one I had my eye on from the beginning of Audio Week.

Summarization: Week 7 & 8

  • I always dread audio assignments. I like listening to music, but have never spent much time on editing or creating new things with it. However, it wasn’t that bad. Audacity (which I used for every assignment I tried) makes it a bit easier to edit music. This week I tried to do some of the more difficult assignments. I did two three stars and two two stars. I noticed the assignment bank for the audio section was smaller than it was for visual or design. I felt there wasn’t much to choose from and I had to opt to do assignments I normally would have passed over for something else.

Chipmunk’d- 3 stars

Character Calls- 2 stars

Context- 3 stars

Contest Nobody could win- 2 stars

  • For the daily creates, I created a separate post since there were so many

  • Finding recycled media was easy for me. I had quite a few left over from the design and visual assignments. I actually tried at least 3 other assignments but they didn’t work out. The first one is called “Create an Album Cover using the Links Given”. It was for the assignment Album Cover. I didn’t like the results of this project and found another assignment that I liked better. The next one was called “Awful Picture of Sunglasses for turning an everyday object into extraordinary. It was for the assignment Everyday Object. I did end up completing this project but with a different picture. The next was “Australian Flag not used in A Place I’ve Never Been”. I collected pictures for the assignment A Place I’ve Never Been but didn’t like the way this picture looked in the final product so I took it out. The last one was “Unfinished window for Your Dreams out the Window”. It was for the assignment Your Dreams out the window. I couldn’t get it to look right with the window so I found an assignment I liked better.

  • Finally, our radio show is complete and turned in! I feel that we have been working on this forever and I’m extremely satisfied with our final product. I really liked our idea of a RoadTrip Radio and our approach on how we put things together. I feel most people listen to the radio in the car so this fits perfectly. We also didn’t want to do just a boring story so we added in funny characters and sound effects. Our character’s points of view were also added into the story.

When we were discussing our topics, Kiersten mentioned that a possibility of a road trip drama could be cool. We all fell in love with the idea! We used just a canvas messaging system at first to communicate, but then a google doc was created and this was how we communicated our ideas from then on. I feel as an online class it was a bit more difficult to communicate. You don’t have that in class time to collaborate, get to know the people in your group, or set up meeting times. Also, checking emails and the google doc consistently for everyone was a bit of  a challenge. We eventually did meet in person as a group to put the final product of our show together. That, to me, was the easiest part. We had fun getting into character and recording our pieces.

I tried to help organize and and get meetings times together. I am typically a very organized person so I wouldn’t say that is out of my comfort zone. When we met in person, we all came up with the script together. Everyone contributed evenly to it to develop each character to fit into the story. We also decided on sound effects and where to put them during this time. I downloaded a few, but I also had many sound effects already downloaded onto my computer which was convenient.  I signed up for our show time and was going to do the skype call, however my skype is not working and had to opt out of it. I also tried to post updates about our progress and tweet about it.

I think our show accomplished exactly what we wanted. It’s funny and I feel that it will hold the listener’s attention. They will be on their toes about what will happen next and if the family will ever come together as a whole! I also really like how we added in each character’s thoughts in the beginning and the end. I feel that adds a bit more than just dialogue. I believe it really does allow the listener to connect with each character a bit more.

In the beginning of audio, I was not thrilled to be working with it. Audio is not in my comfort zone and seems to be that it would be difficult to work with. I have had my ups and downs with it, but feel now that after the audio assignments and putting the radio show together I have a basic knowledge of how it works and can do simple things. I am not a genius with audio, but I do believe that doing these assignments has improved my knowledge and understand about it.

  •  EXTRA CREDIT: I’ve noticed that I had been slacking on commenting, so when this extra credit opportunity was opened up I took it head on. I was excited about it! I actually commented more than 7 times just because it was interesting looking at other people’s ideas. I have also been trying to tweet more.

Homer, I am..YOUR FATHER!

A quick mash-up I created in Audacity.

Theme Verse **

This assignment asked that you create your own verse by taking pieces of your favorite songs and editing them together. Because our radio show was autumn themed, I took all my Halloween favorites and made a mash-up. The mash-up is of Legend of the Sleepy Hallow’s “Headless Horseman Song”  Boo To You T, oo, Winnie the Pooh’s “I wanna scare myself”, Nightmare Before Christmas’ “This is Halloween” and Groovie Goolies’ “Monster Mash”.

Surprisingly, this took a lot of time and planning in order to achieve the right transitions. I must have spent a good 15 hours on this project. The main annoyance is that I had to keep walking away from it, come back, and I’d want to change the whole entire thing.

In the end, it has grown on me and I love it.

The Way It Should’ve Been

So for our DS106 assignment 2, I went with a FanFic assignment entitled, “The Way It Should Have Been,” where we were supposed to take a scene from a movie or book that we like and change it. I actually chose a scene from a recent episode of Sons of Anarchy. I know that’s a TV show, but this scene has really effected me over the last few weeks. In the original scene (spoiler alert), my favorite character on the show, Opie is shockingly murdered in prison. I decided this scene was perfect to “enhance.” So without further adieu:

“No!” Opie declared as he head butted the guard, sealing his fate. With one act of defiance, Opie had nominated himself to go into the secluded cell to fight to the death against, God only knows how many gang bangers, hand selected by Pope for his revenge.

Opie was thrown into the cell all the while his three friends, Jax, Tigg and Chibbs looked on helpless, banging on the bullet proof glass that separated their friend from death, pleading with him.

“Keep it interesting, shithead!” ordered the guard.

The main guard tossed a lead pipe into the center of the room. This was Opie’s only hope, but once again, God only knew how many bloodthirsty thugs would be coming through the door on the opposite side of the room.

As his friends, his fellow club members, his brothers, looked on, “I got this,” was, once again, all Opie could mutter. Then a single spot light shown in the center of the room, shining down over Opie, and the door on the opposite wall opened and four large gangsters stalked through the door, surrounding Opie. Opie brushed his hair out of his face and clutched the pipe tightly, taking a swing at the thug number one, shattering his jaw.

A second tried to choke Opie from behind, but Opie flipped the banger over his shoulder and onto the first guy who was clutching at his face, blood pouring from his mouth. Like a bolt of lightning, Opie smashed the pipe over the second punk’s head, crushing his skull, rolling into the corner of the room where his friends could no longer see him through the window.

His back against the wall, Opie charged the two remaining guys hulking in the center of the room, back into Jax’s view, clotheslining one with pipe, shattering his larynx, leaving the guy hopeless on the floor, blood gurgling from his mouth. The man tried to release a scream, but there was just too much blood. He coughed and gagged and rolled away.

Three down and one to go, oddly enough, the biggest left for last. Opie dropped the pipe to the side of the cell and with his hands waved the guy over. This was personal, and so it would end, personally.

The two behemoths traded blow for blow, punch for punch. One of the gang banger’s teeth went flying and as cuts opened, the blood flowed from both men.  At the last second, Opie managed to hit a left hook above the banger’s left eye and the man staggered back. Opie used a right hook to the man’s gut to leave him breathless and as the man staggered once more, Opie quickly grabbed the pipe and, in an upward, diagonal thrust, across the face, ended the man’s life.

None of the members of SAMCRO looking on believed it would be possible.

Opie was left breathless, crouched in the middle of the cell, surveying the wreckage when the same door the thugs originally entered through, opened once more. This time, it was Pope and the head guard.

“You done pretty well for yourself, son,” said Pope. “I must admit, I’m quite impressed with you Sons of Anarchy. Perhaps we can work out a deal and end this misery between us.”

Just then the door that Opie was pushed through was opened and Jax and Opie were reunited face to face. Jax was as shocked as the guard and Pope.

“What’d you have in mind?” asked Jax.

The scene ends as Jax and Pope shake hands and Opie is reunited with his brothers.

Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron say whaaaat?

May I just say I am REALLY REALLY enjoying finally putting my prom pictures to good USE! haha. I decided to take part in Celeb Mashup, by Samantha Bert! (: “Take a picture of your favorite celebrity and put yourself in the picture with them somehow. This is really easy to do! First pick a celebrity, pick a picture of yourself, and put them together!”
The [design] assignment was worth two stars! and it was a lot of fun! I just pasted both photos into Paint! and Viola!

I am also using this post as an example for my [design] creation!

Crazy Right?!?! WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

Invention of tomato soup

Invention of Tomato Soup

I took images from good of a masher, tomatoes, tomatoes over the stove, getting it ready to label it to Campbell’s soup and the soup into a bowl. I put together all the photos in order onto paint. I then saved this image and uploaded it into Dumper. Where it automatically gets turned into a sketch drawing. I like this feature because it can turn any picture into a drawing, and for this assignment it makes it look old like the original plans of Campbells tomato soup.
