A Very Tempting Mashup

Years ago, a young boy was sitting on a couch with his grandparents watching a biography about a rather popular group. The boy sat through this approximately three hour long biographical film that talk about their lives and played just about each and every one of their greatest hits. For years to come, he continued to listen to these very songs everyday with his grandparents and when he was gifted his first MP3 player,  the first set of songs he added to it were from The Temptations.  You would think that he would get tired of these songs after a while, but he never did. You can now hear him humming the songs every now again as he heads to class or does anything productive. Who is this boy you ask? Well, you are reading a blog post from him right now!

This three star assignment required me to take some songs that I thought were the best of my favorite band or singer and create a mash up of those very songs. The mashup didn’t turn out that great, but I really enjoyed trying to making it sound okay. The songs that I used were, Get Ready, Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, (I Know) I’m Losing You, and Just My Imagination. My personal favorite of those five would have to be Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone because how the song tells a story for each of the vocalists and from their point of view.

To create this mashup, I used Audacity to edit the inserted songs. For a majority of it, I used the Time Shift tool to move around and reposition each song  to help them flow a bit better.

The final step before exporting the song,  I highlighted a section of a song and then went to the effect tab to make the end of the mashup fade out instead of abruptly ending.instruct

That’s all the steps I made to create this project, so don’t let the three stars fool you. This assignment is easier than it looks, so hopefully you can follow my steps to create a mashup of your very own!

Music Mashup – Toto and Darude

Assignment (3.5 stars)

For this assignment, I chose to mashup the songs Africa by Toto, and Calm Before the Storm by Darude. I chose these two songs because Calm Before the Storm is a techno song with only a few lyrics, very much unlike Africa. I thought that these two songs would make for an interesting collaboration, and my character Edward Creeper is a sucker for good music, so he was a big fan of this assignment. I had to turn down the audio somewhat in Calm Before the Storm so that the lyrics in Africa could be heard, but overall, I think this assignment went pretty well, even if the finished product doesn’t sound all that listenable.

To complete this assignment, I first downloaded these two songs into Audacity using a YouTube to MP3 converter. I then edited the songs’ lengths to make them match up, and tweaked the volume of each song. I assumed that SoundCloud would take this collaboration down for copyright issues, so I just uploaded it directly to WordPress. This was an interesting assignment, and was cool to hear how these songs work together.

Music Mashup – Follow Me to the Love

I was pretty excited when I saw this assignment! I’m not going to lie, sometime’s I feel that a lot of these audio assignments are way over my head, whether it’s ability or creativity (usually creativity). However, if you’ve been following along with my posts, you’ll see that I’m heavily immersed in the dance world here at UMW! I have recently started choreographing (yay!) which means that I needed to familiarize myself in the world of cutting music! I’m a Mac user, so naturally I initially chose to use Garageband. I have recently downloaded Audacity, and I’m starting to learn it, but for now I’m still a Garageband girl! So I guess this whole rant was to explain the fact that I’m already pretty familiar with the world of cutting/mashing up music, so naturally I was excited to mash up two different songs for this assignment!

I knew that the first song I wanted to be slow and have a beat that flows. I thought a nice flowy song would pair well with a fun hip-hop/pop song with strong beats. I went through my iTunes library to find songs that I thought would mash well. I knew instantly that I wanted “Where Is the Love” by the Black Eyed Peas. I’m a huge fan of the beat, I think it’s really strong but simple. From here, I looked for a song with a very flowy beat that would complement it. This is where things got a little tricky. I went through several different songs, such as “Bubbly” by Colbie Caillat and “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis. Both of these songs presented a beat that was very nice, slow, and smooth, however the beats of “Where Is the Love” seemed to totally overpower it. As I scrolled through some more, I found an old favorite song, and I knew that “Follow Me” by Uncle Kracker had to be the one! It presented the flowy quality that I was looking for, however was not too soft that it would be overpowered.

After I chose my songs, I opened my Garageband and imported them both in. I decided that I wanted to start with the beginning of “Follow Me” to introduce a soft but steady beat. Where the song starts to pick up is where I overlaid “Where Is the Love”. I cut out the beginning of “Where Is the Love” so it came in right on a strong beat. I thought this would bring the beat up a bunch and give it more life. I kept the volume of each track the same, because I wanted “Where Is the Love” to slightly overpower “Follow Me”, but I didn’t not need to raise its volume because it is already a much louder song. Then, I faded out “Where Is the Love” because it is much longer than “Follow Me”. I faded it out during the chorus that matched up with the last chorus of “Follow Me”. Then, I had the last bit of the mashup just play “Follow Me”, just like the beginning. After I was done editing, I exported it to my iTunes and uploaded to my Soundcloud! I hope everyone enjoys it!

ds106 – Assignment Bank – July 7, 2015 – Mashup Assignments

Assignment: Think of anyplace you spend money, and what you most often buy at that place. Then redesign their logo to incorporate your favorite product. Do as many as you want.

Whole Foods Veggies

Since choosing to eat a vegan/plant based diet, I have been shopping at Whole foods Market more and more. I Mostly purchase vegetables and other vegan items, but have started to pick up a few whole body items. Since this assignment said to chose the items you purchase most, I went with VEGGIES. Spending a little bit more for better quality items, is completely worth it to me.

Slayer of Shortbread – Week 5 mashup assignment

I had a hard time finding a Mashup assignment that fit with my focal theme, so I chose one that I had some options as to what I needed to use.  I decided on Opposites Attract.  The instructions state to pick two songs from different genres and remix them together.  I decided to go to extremes with my music choices; the songs I chose are: Slayer of Light by Ensiferum (who consider themselves “melodic folk metal”) and Shortnin Bread performed by Noelle & John (children’s music).  I’m calling this song: Slayer of Shortbread. Enjoy!

(Warning: If you dislike heavy metal music, this song might not be for you).

We had previously purchased the Ensiferum album and I downloaded Shortnin Bread from Free Kids Music.

When I started creating this mashup I tried using Audacity.  Although I’ve used this program before, I struggled this time.  I couldn’t figure out how to fade, add tracks and split tracks.  I eventually gave up on Audacity and went with Camtasia.

Since I already had the mp3s I decided to use the songs to start instead of finding a video.  I wanted to only use the chorus of Shortnin Bread and I tried to space it appropriately with Slayer of Light.  I used a lot of audio points and cutting to get just the right mix and fading I wanted.

AudioPoints

Because I was making it in Camtasia, I figured I would have to add some video or it would be a really boring black screen with audio.  I found a live performance of Slayer of Light and tried to layer it in an it just wasn’t working out.  That’s when I found that I could export just the audio!

I then started on making the image to accompany it in when I uploaded to SoundCloud.  I found a copyright free image of shortbread and jaggedly cut out half and made the background red for effect.  I did all this using GIMP and the lasso and bucket fill tools.
I love shortbread cookies, and sometimes my mouth is the real “Slayer of Shortbread”… yumm!!

Dwight Schrute Survial Tips? – DS106 Mash-up

This week I chose to do a Mash-Up DS106 Assignment that asked me to create a remix of clips from my favorite television show personality. I chose Dwight Schrute from the american television series “The Office”.

As you may have noticed, my focal theme for most of this blog is the outdoors, hiking, camping, etc. I wanted to choose a character that I loved while also keeping to this theme. Therefore Dwight Schrute was PERFECT! He is always giving very unusual survival advice in the show and putting it all together just makes it that much more ridiculous.

Let me walk you through how you could make a video similar to this on your own. First you need to find a youtube video or two of your character that you want to get clips from. Then, type “ss” right after the “www.” of the video url and it will take you to a download page savefrom.net. Download the video as a mp4, any size you choose, and then you can drag it to your desktop, then import it into iMovie. From there you can take different bits of video you’d like to use. I added a bizzare royalty free music clip behind the video that had a jungle feel to it just for fun. To get royalty free music and sounds like that go to Incompetech.

Now are those really survival tips? No. But was it amazingly funny? I’m going out on a limb and saying yes. The project was a lot of fun to make. Every time I use iMovie I feel as if I get better and better at it!

Who would you make a mash-up video of?

Life Lesson: Mute Often – AB Mashup

I could do this all day! In this assignment, the mashup combines a serious movie scene with inappropriate laughter. The idea is to change the mood of the scene. At first, I was daunted by figuring out what movie scene to select. I had recently watched a movie with Haley Joel Osment (the young actor who so brilliantly played the role of Cole Sear in The Sixth Sense) which must have planted the idea of this scene in my head. The film focuses on a boy who communicates with spirits that don’t realize they are dead. In this scene, Cole admits to seeing dead people to Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis).  For me, it was one of the most intense moments in the movie, and a perfect scenario for inappropriate laughter.

To produce the mashup, I downloaded the scene from Youtube and found a sound clip from Audiojungle. Initially, I maintained the original drama of the scene by opening with part of the intact version of the confession. After Cole says, “I see dead people,” I added Dr. Crowe’s response without audio. I wanted to create the moment after someone says something ridiculous and everything stops. Then, a slow laughter begins to swell.  As the laughter grows, Cole feels utterly stupid and regrets ever opening his mouth. The original clip begins with this same shot. However, in that particular moment Cole attempts to gather his courage to reveal his secret. It worked perfectly to show both emotional instances.

Inappropriate Laughter Mashup Assignment

Mashup a scene from your favor serious movie with a laugh track. You can find some appropriate laugh tracks on freesounds.org. Download a clip of the scene, and compile the laughter track within the audio, keeping in mind that you are trying to change the meaning or the scene by introducing laughter. What is the story now?

Classical-Modern Mashup Tutorial

This post may be only 3 stars (while the most video assignments are 4 or 5) but it’s time consuming if the internet does not want to corporate with you. After choosing to do this I assignment, I had to choose which song and music video I wanted to use. For the music video, I chose Taylor Swift’s Blank Space because she’s my favorite musician and I love the video. For the classical music, I chose Boccherini featured in Master in Commander. After this, I went to youtube to find the videos of the songs. Once I found the Blank Space music video, I went online to http://www.clipconverter.cc, which takes clips from youtube and converts them into any other file format that you want. If you have iMovie, like I do, then you want to convert it into an MP4 file. Once you specify the format, just click start and it will bring you to the page that tells you it has been converted.

Screen Shot 2015-06-10 at 5.31.21 PM

All you have to do then is click download (the download process may take a couple of minutes). You can then download the classical music file as an MP3 (this makes your life easier when you are in your movie creator because I’m not sure if you can mute the video). For this, I used http://convert2mp3.net/en/index.php which worked really well. All you have to do is paste in the url and then hit convert. It will bring you to a page that will have a download button, click that and it will download onto your computer. Next, what you want to do is open  iMovie and hit create and click movie. Then grab the files for the music and music video and drag them onto the iMovie page. The video will be above the music file. Now go over to the left side panel and click Titles. You will then be able to choose a title page. Once you have dragged your selected title page into your movie workspace, double-click on it to type whatever you want (this also works when adding an the end titles). To add a transition to any part of the movie, above the Titles button on the left side panel there is a Transitions button. Click that and choose whichever transition you like. You will then drag it onto the part of the video that you want to have a transition. If you would like to delete the ending or the beginning of the music video (sometimes the videos have their own titles or ending credits), click on the part of the clip that you would like to delete, then you want to right click to which will bring up a menu. The menu will have a button that says Split Clip. Click that button and it will split the clip into two clips. All you have to do after that is click on the clip you want to delete and hit the delete button on your keyboard!

Screen Shot 2015-06-10 at 5.43.09 PM

To mute the music video, go to the top of the screen and click the modify menu. Within the modify menu there is a mute clip button. If you click that button you will mute the clip. Once you are satisfied with your video, go to the top of the iMovie screen and next to the Import and the Create button is the Share button. Click the share button and choose the way that you want to share your new music video! Once you have completed that you are all finished!

Here is the video that I created:

Classical-Modern Mashup

Ingredients:

1 piece of classical music

1 modern music video

How to make:

First, strip or mute the music out of the modern music video. Then layer the classic music on top.

Voila! Some hopefully hilarious, weirdly sexual classical-modern mashup.

Inspired by Beyonce Dances to Shostokovich.

Movie Mashup

This is the “this doesn’t belong here assignment” worth 2 points

Matrix Thompson mash

I love movies, and I love comparing movies. Naturally, then, I would love to mash movie images together, no? Well, it was quite a bit of fun, though my particular choice perhaps isn’t as subtle as the assignment calls for. I played around quite a bit with Johnny Depp’s head to try and render it a more similar color to the washed-out palate of that shot from the Matrix.
