Free Abused Animals

That was a challenge but also a learning experience. For this week we were assigned a DS106 Audio Assignment and I chose FlickrSounds. I didn’t think this would be too hard but I did get stumped at one point.

The assignment says:

This is a simple mashup that searches Freesounsd and flickr for the same word. It then display the sound and picture. You can reload either until you get an image and sound you like. This can be added to a list, and the exercise repeated. Once you have a set of picture/sounds you can grab an embed code to put them on a blog. A set of pictures/sounds could create a story, illustrate a quote, saying or slogan. Make flickrSounds .

Here is what I created! Go ahead take a listen it is entertaining.

My focus theme for this semester is animal rights and activism. Thus the reason I chose the phrase “free abused animals.” I have a passion for animals and don’t like to hear stories about abused animals and would ideally like to open my own shelter one day to take in abused or neglected animals. I am not a vegetarian or anything that extreme but I feel that pet owners need to be help responsible for their actions.
For me it was difficult to find an audio assignment I was comfortable producing. I don’t like the sound of my recorded voice and many of the assignments asked that of you.
It was fun flipping through the different pictures and sounds that popped up, some were a little crazy. So this is a combination of three sound/image pairs that represent the words “Free Abused Animals.” Once I created them on FlickrSounds in the preview section it gives you all these options on how to export. I tried just about everything until I was blue in the face. Then I learned how to embed HTML. This was a cool thing for me because I don’t like dealing with coding (I took a Python class in undergrad.) but this was made pretty simple.  The website creates the embedded code and then at the top of a blog post when you are editing you can click the HTML tab and embed the code! So cool! That was the largest challenge for me on this assignment.
Overall, this assignment was pretty easy but took me some technical know how to figure out.

An Ode to the Ideal Woman

I’m sensing a theme in my art this week. Feminity. Objectification. Romance. A mix bag really of cultural expectations and the way I define my own sense of beautiful. The assignment this week was to take two songs and mash them together into a conversation.

I decided to use Cake’s Short Skirt/ Long Jacket and Alanis Morissette’s 21 things I want in a Lover. I like the back and forth about what the other is looking for in the perfect partner but I am having issues with How Slow Alanis Sounds HELP!!! Suggestions? I am using Audacity.

Wait, hold on… I’m having major issues now…

The song represents three days of work, and I feel pretty close to done. However, I would love to “fix” the way Alanis sounds when she’s singing (too slow?). I’m not very musical, I don’t have a lot of practice listening to beats and scales and sounds, and I feel all panic-y when it comes to anything singing/musical but I also love music. All kinds. So I’m glad I picked this assignment but I’m putting it out here early in the hopes someone can offer a suggestion on how I can fix that one little issue I have.

Oh, and then there were the unseen issues with actually using real songs to create this mashup but I think I figured out a way around it here…

downton ab(beyonce)

Mashups? Ummm, yes, please. As a hungry hungry pop culture consumer, I love seeing my favorites all smooshed up together. For this video assignment, I put together the Downton Abbey theme and Beyonce’s music video for 711.

I loved Downton Abbey when it was on, and I have to admit that just hearing the theme that plays during the opening credits pulls at my heartstrings. However, I think it’s important to remember that Downton was not without some serious flaws. Namely its lack of diversity. Sure, one could argue that the setting of the period piece saga necessitated an entirely white cast (Ok, so they had one black character. One time. Just the one). Still, in a whole seven seasons, the show never had the courage to even address the classism and racism that laid the foundation for the core characters to go about enjoying their oh-so-privileged lives. I’m not trying to dismiss the entertainment value of the show, but I do think it’s important to always keep these things in mind.

Anyways, what better excuse to watch more Beyonce videos than to overlay the Downton theme with the most prominent black female entertainer of our day? Lady Crawley would be turning in her grave.

Here’s the original Beyonce video:

In part, I selected the Downton theme because its tempo is relatively quick for the classical music that I’m familiar with. I thought that this would make it fit more seamlessly with a pop music video, and for the most part I was correct. 711 has a lot of tempo changes so it’s not a perfect fit, but there are moments where the two seem in sync. I’m happy with the result, and I hope you enjoy watching it!

The Process:

If you have iMovie, then this assignment should be fairly straightforward. First, download the audio you want to use. I used a youtube to mp3 converter online. Enter in the URL for the video you’re using, and click ‘Convert.’ Then click ‘Download.’

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 1.04.46 PM

Next, download the video you’re overlaying the audio with. I used QuickTime for this. Go to ‘File,’ and select ‘New Screen Recording.’ Drag the box to the section of the screen you want to record (around the video presumably) and begin. Turn off the annotations so you don’t get annoying pop-ups in your recording!

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 1.05.44 PM

After you’ve finished recording, save the clip to your computer. Open iMovie, and select ‘Create’ from the top bar. Choose ‘No Theme.’

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 1.18.31 PM

Next, select ‘Import’ from the same top menu bar. Find your video, select it, and click ‘Import Selected.’

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 1.19.41 PM

Drag the orange sliders to the section of your video you want to use for the final project.

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 1.21.37 PM

Click inside the orange box you just created, and drag it to your timeline.

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 1.21.43 PM

Now, go back to ‘Import,’ and import your audio clip the same way as before. Mine was longer than the video, so I used the orange sliders to only add that amount of time to the video.

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 1.22.54 PM

Just like before, drag down your audio to the timeline, on top of your video clip so that it starts at the same time. If you cut off your audio in the above step, you’re going to want to fade it out so that it sounds ok. See the tiny gray circle at the far right of the audio track? Slide over the icon in a few seconds, and it will fade out:

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 2.40.47 PM

If you’re happy with your video and the sound, click ‘Share’ from the top menu and choose the platform you wish to share it with. I selected ‘YouTube,’ and followed the pop-up windows to log in to my YouTube account and upload.

Screen Shot 2016-06-12 at 1.25.15 PM

This will take a while. Check its progress by clicking the clock icon in the top right:

Once you’re done, check out your video on YouTube!

A Very Brady Visual Assignment: The CoZy Clan

My first Visual Assignment was super fun to make!  For this assignment, I was tasked with mimicking the well-known Brady Bunch family photo with my loved ones and coming up with a catchy alliteration for a name.

They didn’t know that the CoZ (AKA Cozy) Family has been in the making and gracing social media in the form of cute pic stitches and catchy hashtags for over three years now.  I’m really proud of my creation!

Visual Assignment Week 1

So, the Cozy Clan is made up of (Co)fields and (Z)ahralbans.  Every square contains the bust of someone I love and cherish.  The first column on the left starts at the top with the dearest love of my life, Brent.  His optimism is infectious and his dance moves are smooth.  Coming in just below him is the boy who will be the sweetest, smartest (and most likely hairiest) lady killer when he grows up.  That sweet Jack makes me feel loved every time I’m around him.  Just below him is his twin, polar opposite, and one of my best friends, Aviley.  I’m so lucky to get to help this little girl grow into an amazing young lady.

The second column from top to bottom begins with the most recent addition to the long line of Russells.  RZ4 (AKA Quattro) is the toughest, smartest, sassiest, and kindest boy I’ve ever met and the best nephew an aunt could ever have.  At the bottom is my pops, RZ2, who I would be completely lost without.  If there’s an age when it’s not appropriate to call your dad to solve all your problems (car trouble, how to mash potatoes, bad dreams, etc), I hope I never live to see it.  The top of the last column is my big brother Russ, RZ3.  Our love-hate relationship will always be unbalanced- way more love than hate, and I can’t thank him enough for the life lessons he taught me early on (ˆˆ??<><>BA).  Just below, is my sweet, sweet baby brother/son Taylor.  I raised him more like my own, and I’m incredibly proud of the marine/man he’s become with and without me.  Finally, there is a special love reserved for my precious fur baby, Tic Tac.  She’s spunky, intelligent, and 96% crazy.

The basic picture was simple to make.  I used the Layout App that I usually use for Instagram posts.  It’s super easy to select your pictures, choose a layout, and edit and manipulate the pictures.  I was lucky that the limit was 9 pictures.  Phew.  Then, I got creative.  I took a blank black picture and moved it to the center square.  I transferred the picture to my laptop so I could add the text.  For online picture editing, I use BeFunky.com because of its simplicity and many free options.  To get the perfect text, I downloaded the Brady Bunch font from Dafont.com.  And that was that!

Looking forward to my next assignment!

You Talkin’ To Me?

Original assignment (1.5 Stars)

MovieLines

Fortune cookie and movie line mashup.

I created this design using just Microsoft Word and Snipping Tool. I chose six of my favorite lines that I thought could pass as fortunes. Once I underlined the lines I used the Snipping Tool and saved the photo as a .jpg file.

The first quote is Star Wars. This one essentially means hopefully things go you way. The second quote is perhaps the only one that may not be a fortune. I still like the line though. The third line could represent an unforeseen break up. The fourth line foreshadows an adventure. The fifth foreshadows success. The sixth foreshadows an obstacle.

JOIN THE PARTY!

Invitations are so outdated. The new thing to promote events now are flyers and posters. Learning how to make one may come in handy for whatever future events come up. For this event advertisement assignment I decided to make a poster for a real event thats coming up. MY BIRTHDAY! Who knows I may even use this to invite my friends ?!

Last year for my 22nd birthday (Yes, I am young… I joined the army straight out of high school) I celebrated in New York City with family and close friends. My family, as I mentioned before, are all crazy. My birthday is no exception for their craziness. In fact, thats more of a reason to be crazy. Anyways, we ended up going to a bar called Lucky 7 in the city. After much dancing and laughing, to my surprise a cake was brought out. In my head I’m thinking YES CAKE ! That thought didn’t last too long haha. As soon as I blew out the candles, my cousin smashed my face into to cake ! YES ! IN THE MIDDLE OF A BAR! Luckily for him I was too happy to care, and luckily for me my sister caught the whole thing on camera… lets just say no one ended up eating cake & many many laughs resulted from these photos the next day.

I decided to advertise that level of crazy fun on this years birthday flyer! You can see my face being smashed right into the cake haha. Who wouldn’t want to join that kind of fun right? I chose primarily dark colors so that the emphasis of BIG 23 stands out! Join in on the fun !

[4 STARS]

Done with poker, dog garn it.

I was searching through the assignment bank looking for ways to incorporate my character, Merrill Shale. When I found this one, I considered how I might make a video of an animal talking go along with an old Western gambler, and the answer came straight to me… If you aren’t with me yet, we are not on the same wavelength: dogs playing poker. Or in this case, dog losing poker and complaining about it. So… I went in search. I aimed to find a dog barking video that looked had a dog that looked like one in one of those paintings, and I found a St Bernard. I recorded some audio, muted the dog track, and put them together.  Then, I put Kenny Rogers in the background because it fits.

ET Doesn’t Belong Here

The assignment This Doesn’t Belong Here directs us to mash up two iconic movie scenes. It’s fairly simple.

The first step of the processes is to think of two different movie scenes that are recognizable by most movie goers. I chose Luke on Tattoine in Star Wars and ET in front of the moon.

After the movie scenes are decided upon find still images of them on the internet and download them to your computer. (I’m on a MacOS)

Using Preview I opened the JPG’s I downloaded from the internet and opened the ‘markup toolbar’ within the window of the JPG from which I wanted to copy an image. (I opened the toolbar in my ET JPG.)

Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 16.23.06

Utilizing the instant alpha tool in the upper left hand corner, I managed to highlight and copy the image of interest, which was ET in my case:

Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 16.27.34

Pasting the newly copied image into the host image which was the Star Wars image in this case, resize the pasted image to subtly fit into its new home. I pasted the copied ET image into Luke’s Tattoine picture, making sure to resize ET appropriately:

Rocky Raging Bull

The four and a half star assignment Movie Mashup was completed using the two movies Raging Bull and Rocky. The assignment directs us to create a movie poster utilizing the elements of two movies. I used both of the movies’ main characters.

raging-bull

Rocky and Raging Bull are both boxing movies that have been compared to each other. I took stills from both movies and combined them into one poster utilizing the MacOSX application preview.

Looks Like It Belongs Here To Me

I completed the “This Doesn’t Belong Here” assignment for my final mash up assignment. It asked to combine two popular movies. I sort of remixed it myself a little bit in order to incorporate my character. I combined a picture of a homesteader’s wife working in the field with a puppy from the 101 Dalmations movie. I thought adding a pet to the family would make it look natural, even though the pictures are from two different sources.

I actually cropped the puppt using Word document’s photo formatting options. It made it very simple. Then I merely placed the puppy in the picture right under my character.
