I chose to do this particular ds106 visual assignment because over the summer I had been introduced to Minecraft. My boyfriend was playing one day, showing me some stuff you can do with the game, and he suggested that I start my own world. I’m usually not interested in computer games, but he said that I would enjoy this game because it’s not really difficult, and I could manipulate my own world and build whatever I wanted. I quickly became pretty obsessed with this game (thankfully it was summer and I didn’t have 4 or 5 classes going on) and was playing all the time. Now, I don’t play as much, but I still get into it every once in a while.
So I made my little Minecraft guy using the link on the ds106 assignment. I actually took the eyes and hair from one of the “examples” on the website, because I really didn’t know how to make it look nice. But I used the color of my own eyes and hair. My outfit I made is just a plain yellow dress. My favorite color is yellow so I thought it was fitting.
Now when I mine for diamonds, harvest my wheat and fight off creepers, I can do it looking like myself. It was a really neat assignment, and I’m glad I chose it. It was a little personal and it taught me something (even if it was only how to make your Minecraft guy look like you). I enjoyed it nevertheless, and I look forward to choosing my next ds106 assignment.
