Wacky 80’s Movie Poster

For my second Visual Assignment Bank project I chose a 3.5 star assignment entitled, Create a silly Movie Poster.

I am not sure how “silly” my poster is, but I learned quite a bit by creating it! I learned how to add images/objects to a photo using Photoshop. Photoshop seems a lot less intimidating after completing this assignment.

Utilizing the free Photoshop tutorial I created my poster with the original When Harry Met Sally poster. I then looked at movie posters from other famous 80’s movie posters. Using the layers, quick select, brush, and masking tools featured in Photoshop I erased the backgrounds of the other posters to focus on main characters.

Harry and Sally are now joined by the cast of The Breakfast Club (’85), the Ghostbusters‘ ghost (’84), Jack Torrance from The Shining (’80), John McClane from Die Hard (’88), and Sam from Sixteen Candles (’84).

It’s not perfect, but I gained a lot from it! Hope you enjoy my revamped poster!

Minimalist Movie Poster

I had a lot of fun with this assignment! I chose one of my favorite movies, October Sky. It’s not an 80s movie, but it is officially October now!

I love this movie for a lot of reasons, but the main one (and my reason for a lot of the things I like) is that it’s nostalgic. I watched it for the first time with my dad and I associate the movie with him. Besides, it’s a pretty inspiring movie.

When designing it, I chose to go as minimalist as possible and just had a basic rocket outline with the two stars I, personally, recognize the most. I chose a blue background to represent the clear, blue skies.

I really like the finished product. It’s really simple, but I’m weirdly proud of it.

Here’s a pic of my cat for the end of this post. Just to shake things up a bit.

3.5 Stars

I realized while I was creating this poster, that the Ghostbusters movie poster was minimalist in the first place. So then I had to decide how to explain what happened in a different minimalistic way. I really like the way this photo turned out! I used Canva in order to get everything set up the way I wanted it to. Made the ghost picture transparent, but for some reason, Canva didn’t think so which is why my background is white.

Movie Posters That Matter

For this assignment, I chose the movie Wolf of Wall Street. A movie that promotes an abuse of power, dangerous behaviors, toxic masculinity, and greed. For weeks after this film, I saw people everywhere praising the person the main character is based on. He is not someone we should be looking up to.

That’s my hot take for today. Enjoy!

Truthful Movie Poster

Guns, Bullets, Action… As Expected.

This assignment was fairly easy as compared to some of the other ones I have worked on as of late. I had just went and seen this movie with my father last weekend and I remembered my expectations of it before watching it. My “truth” pretty much sums up my expectations and what exactly the movie was about.

When I googled the movie poster I had several options to choose from. I decided on the one I used as it had lots of space on the poster to work with for me to add my “truth” to it. I downloaded it to my phone and used an app called Typorama. The app had several fonts, typography and styles to use and this one seemed to fit and I added red as opposed to white or gray to go along with the red 3.

Minimalist Movie Poster

3.5 stars

For this assignment, I had to make a movie or tv poster in a minimalist way. I decided to do one for the movie Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. The movie is definitely a tear-jerker, but one of my favorites.

The assignment was linked in this week’s “weekly assignment” blog so I thought I’d give it a go! It was a pretty easy assignment overall, but it required you to think. I chose a picture of a DVD because in the movie the main character, Greg, and his best friend, Earl, make their own versions of classic or foreign movies. When Rachel, the dying girl, gets diagnosed with cancer, they begin to make movies for her- hence the DVD in my poster. I was originally going to use a picture of all the movies that Greg and Earl made, but after looking at other examples from people who had already done the assignment, I realized that picture wouldn’t meet the minimalist requirement.

I used Canva to make the movie poster. I would definitely suggest this site to graphic design beginners! There are so many tools and cool designs on there, and it makes the process REALLY easy and fun!

I selected the poster template and then selected a grey background. I put in my own text and cropped it the way it looks now. When I chose the DVD image, it was red and orange, but I felt like the best way to keep with the minimalist theme was to keep the colors neutral. The great thing about Canva is that you can change the colors of images you want to add to your design.

I would definitely suggest this assignment to other students in the class! Don’t forget to check out my Instagram post about it as well!

Visual Assignment: Create a Silly Movie Poster

Grand Budapest Hotel meets weird animals all from different environments and time periods?

This assignment required me to take a movie poster and make it look silly. I used the graphic-design website Canva to upload a picture of the movie poster I downloaded from Google Images and then insert all the illustrations! I chose the Grand Budapest Hotel because I recently saw it for the first time over winter break and really enjoyed it! Plus I think the movie poster is really pretty. Another easy 4 star assignment!

Harry Potter never actually met Dobby. He only met Irri. Irri is a free gnome!

Minimalist TV/Movie Poster (Design)

Still in design I have now completed this 3.5/5 stars assignment. This assignment consists on designing a minimalistic movie poster:

movie poster

Trying to go with the sense of minimalism I have used 2 icons as my images, some text for featured stars and also the title name. I have also added a space background faded into the background using opacity on Photoshop so although it perhaps has more than what be classed as ‘minimalist‘ I believe for a movie poster it has to tell you partially what it’s about.

What I see when I look at it and how I wanted to convey it:

  • Icons: A produce of the internet. The symbol which represents the internet has a lock. This could suggest privacy but also entrapment. Which leads to the title.
  • Locked in(ternet): Locked in, conveying the entrapment, yet is it locked in for your own privacy and choice or is it because you’ve been forced into it?
  • Space background: As users of the World Wide Web we are like stars in space. Millions of us using millions of different things. Sometime you can find yourself lost.

On the top of internet use, It’s so important to use the internet safely by securing passwords, being careful who you talk to etc. We have all heard of the things that can go wrong with using the internet yet are naive to think these things would never happen to us until they do. I myself as a generation brought up with the internet am also at fault for this. However, also brought up by parents who didn’t really grow up with this level of technology force their worries on to myself at times with the likes of cyber bullying and password protection.

My fear of the internet: Not knowing who is watching you or able to affect your life while remaining anonymous.

My love of the internet: The flexibility, the accessibility, the speed it evolves.

6.5 stars completed!
