Over-Dramatic Reading

Over-Dramatic Reading

Choose any written material (a song, poem, short book, excerpt from a novel, scene from a television show, news article, etc.) and record a dramatic reading. Read your selection in a way that alters the message of the original material (at an odd pace, overly excited, sad, etc. — be creative, make it your own). Make sure you mention what it is you are reading, and who the author of the material is.

The Original

That’s right.  I tackled the master himself.  The spongey yellow rectangle of comedic goodness.

With some extra-special help from the hubby once again, we bring you: THE Best. Day. Ever. ;D

This assignment was worth 2 Stars, and way more laughs than could ever be captured or fully appreciated here. :)

Over-Dramatic Reading: 2 Stars

For this assignment I got the idea to take the ending reporting quote from Scream, done by Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) in the movie. It is a eerily calm report by her, that makes you replay all of the events of the horror movie in your head about the tragedies that occurred in Woodsboro. My plan was to read it in a very dull tone to try to alter the meaning of this obviously important quote. The way that I read it made it seem like the reporter was very uninterested and almost mocking these happenings. The reason I decided to use this quote is because the movie Scream is obviously a classic horror film, and I enjoy watching it whenever I watch it. It was pretty monumental for a more modern horror film and gave the viewers more to connect with, seeing as how the killers were only high schoolers. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this!

No Need to Be Dramatic

This assignment, “Over-Dramatic Reading,” took care of a Daily Create and an audio assignment in one. I read Emily Dickinson’s “If you are Coming in the Fall” in my best dramatic voice (semi-British, semi-weird/not sure what’s going on). Since I am bad at anything but being overly-dramatic, that’s how this turned out, which makes it more comedic than dramatic. But that’s kind of what I wanted, because, let’s be serious, no one really likes a drama queen. Other than that, to get this result, I recorded myself using Audacity and my best “dramatic” voice. Edited out the unnecessary shit, and uploaded it to SoundCloud. And voila!

My Ringtone from 2 Songs

Make Your Own Ringtone

Using Audacity, trim, join end-to-end (cut/paste), and/or play side-by-side audio files in order to create your very own ringtone. Ringtones should be a maximum or 40 seconds to conserve phone memory (besides, most cell phones don’t ring longer than 30 seconds or so…the extra 10 seconds is just in case). Be creative, you might want to actually use it on your phone. Please properly cite all sources used — Remember, fair use requires money to use as a defense.

this is a 2 star assignment
I had a lot of fun with this assignment.  I’ve made ringtones from songs on my iPhone before using the app called RingtoneMaker with only one song.  I liked how with this assignment I was able to use more than one song.  I guess the hardest part was finding two songs that I thought went well together.  The two songs I picked were The Seeker Theme (Full Version) and Prophecy from a soundtrack from the tv show Legend of the Seeker (it got cancelled after only 2 seasons because no one knew about it).  Both of the songs were composed by Joseph LoDucaHere is a link to the soundtrack, it can then be viewed in iTunes.  I already had the soundtrack downloaded into my iTunes account.  All I had to do was convert the iTunes songs to .WAV files and then imported them into Audacity.  I then left only the first 30 seconds of the songs.  I then amplified the sound and faded out the end of each song and faded out the endings so it sounded more conclusive, like a ringtone.  I picked these two songs because I liked how the woman’s voice in both songs went well together as one song.

I LIVE!

Oh Glob, how I’ve neglected you! But dry your tears, for here I am, still alive, and about to drop another load of stuff that will probably appear random, at best.  Apologies for my absence, and for this lack of ado, but here we go!

“What did I just listen to?!” you might ask, assuming you actually listened.  Well, that would be the result of assigning a phony radio broadcast to a huge nerd. Starring my buddy Bryan as Dak Territh; Keith Kilmer as Luke Skywalker; Emerald Brookins as caller 1, the “Extra-Gravity Snuggie” commercial, and the “Princess Leia Earmuff” commercial; Tonya Tyrrell as caller 2, “Sunshine Laundry” commercial, “Oxyclean” commercial, and “EnergyStar” commercial; and Greg Musselman (why am I linking this, when clearly, you already know about me!?) as Dev Kathan, lucky caller #10, and various announcers and goofy voices.

What did we think of making this monstrosity? I’m so glad you asked:

This assignment was to perform a dramatic reading of any written material, in such a way as to alter the original message. I decided to channel my inner William Shatner and do some song-talking.  I needed something that sounds ok being sung, but would be utterly ridiculous when spoken.  ”Doo Wah Diddy” (written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich) seemed the obvious choice (but I almost went with the theme song from “Sailor Moon“).

I hope I made Bill proud.

I know it’s been a while, but you remember those “Daily Create” things?  I did some!

The Daily Create #56 – POV silent walk down the street, through a building, etc – No narration!

Challenge accepted:

That’s almost 5 whole minutes of me, not talking.  I hope you all appreciate the effort that entails.

The Daily Create #71 – Reverse – Shoot video of some dynamic action, and then reverse it and post.

This is Matthew Barrett, both a student and a teacher of mine, performing one of the Baguazhang “chi awakening” forms, Snake. I’m particularly fond of the backward sound.

The Daily Create #76 – Some trees express enormous soul. Find and photograph that special tree.
tree 1This poor guy used to be a bit more vertical, but during the flood a few months ago, the ground around his roots got a liiiiiitle too soft.

That’s all for today.  I’m not making any promises, but I’ll see about being a tad more diligent with the posting and such.

PS – Here’s Mythbuster Adam Savage, speaking at the Reason Rally a few days ago.  A bit of warning: he does use a couple of expletives, so if you’re offended by four-letter words, don’t think less of me.  I still think it’s well worth a watch.  Or two. Or twelve.

Process

For this video I had to first think of a good idea. I first considered using Harry Potter or possibly the Matrix. However, after sifting through youtube videos I realized the old anime  dragonball z offered some very memorable speeches. The most memorable of which is Goku’s speech to Frieza right after he turned super saiyan the first time. I then watched a youtube clip of his speech. While watching I copied down the conversation between Frieza and Goku. I then recorded my version of the conversation via soundcloud.

Motivation

DBZ has got to be one of the most cheesiest animes/shows I have ever seen. People literally spend 10 mins powering up and sometimes it this tension is built up over several episodes. I wanted to capture and expand on some of the ridiculous things that go on the show. In particular he kinda sounds like he is from the bible when he says I am truth. A bit much I believe.

Audio Assignments!!

My first Assignment that i did was to make a ringtone, the thing said for it to be 30 to 40 seconds and mine is only 13 so maybe its more a of text tone, but i chose wind and water because they just go well ha! I also wanted to make it less ringtone like because i like when people use strange sounds and noises for ringtones, before i uploaded music to my iPhone my ringtone was the duck quacking! I got these sounds from freesounds.org !

This was my kind of southern accent while placing a strange order at McDonalds, every time i listen to it i laugh lol but i hate recording my voice it is just so strange to me ha

I chose to read the activation guide that came with my replacement iPhone 4 because those 3 simple steps are crucial to a successful activation ha.

Teen angst platform

My feeble attempt at dramatic reading. I know I need to work on using my voice better. It doesn’t help that I can’t stand listening to it. You can take that as a warning.

I thought I’d try to do Cracker’s Teen Angst as a political speech. I’m not sure why – the idea just popped into my head. I put a bit of the tail end of the national anthem at the beginning, and used some Freesound crowd noises and applause in the background. I recorded my voice with Audacity, and played with several effects – amplify, normalize, echo, bass boost. You can hear some bass hum in there. Even with amplification, I had to lower the gain on the background noise, and raise it on the vocal. I added more cheering at certain points

For this task I chose The Fairies by William Allingham

Whilst sleeping these lines ‘ for fear of little men’ came into my mind. I have not thought about this poem for many many years and cant recall learning it at school. Checking with my mother, she thinks that my grandmother may have read it to me. I’m not so sure but it was certainly buried in the minds archives… I have tried to make it both mysterious and threatening with my rendition.  It seems that the poet was a famous Irishmnan and this work was an early piece. He lived in the early -mid 1800s. Enjoy
