Joe Moore’s Secret Words

For this assignment, I had to write a poem that would fit my blog. I stayed with the theme of secret agent because I feel my blog theme is incorporated into that – being secret and such. So I decided to write a poem on Joe Moore’s current thoughts and feelings. I recorded my poem using my VoiceMemos and I uploaded this track to SoundCloud. I liked creating this because I like writing and reading poems. I felt kind of accomplished afterwards. I think my poem was good and it makes sense for the ds106 theme this semester and helps build my character. You can see this post below (3.5 stars):

A Sonnet of my Blog and my Vampire

Shades of blue with legends that lurk in between:
Stories that come in different shapes and sizes, sights and sounds;
All of which shape what they mean,
Waiting to be seen in my background.

You’ll see kittens, ducks, and moments of fun,
Spattered amongst my social media hijinks.
This is where legends are found and even some have begun,
A man who invites you to see what makes him tick.

He’d think himself a man like any other,
A surgeon by day who takes pride in his profession.
By night he steals one blood bag and then another,
The beast inside growling at the suppression.

He is but one instance of so many more,
All kinds of legends that I have in store.

The final assignment I’ve done for the week is this one where I had to create an original poem and recite it. The assignment tells that the poem should be about my blog and its theme, and in addition, I extended this poem to be about both my blog and my vampire character, Callen Zelrich. This is worth 3.5 stars total.

I haven’t written poetry in a long time, but I used to really enjoy it both as a kid and in high school when we’d have poetry assignments. I’ve always particularly enjoyed searching for words that rhyme, and with a poetry reading like this, the melodic effect of those can really be heard. Though I haven’t done much poery reading before, and usually don’t enjoy reading things aloud, I did find it more fun to read something that I wrote myself, to see how my words sound out loud.

I wanted the poem to represent first, the fun attitude my blog takes to storytelling and exploring all these new forms of storytelling in ways I never have before, which continues to be exciting. I wanted to also incorporate a bit of mystery into the poem to fit the Legends and Myths theme too, and lead that into talking about my character. After all, Cal, as my own creation of ideas on the theme we have this semester, represents a lot of the ideas in my blog.

To do this assignment I did have to look on this page to find information on how to write a Shakespearean style Sonnet, so I could get some structure to my poem and rhyme scheme. The style includes 14 lines with 3 quatrains followed by a couplet. I used https://www.rhymezone.com to find a lot of the rhymes, which helped me get inspiration to continue writing onto the next line, when I could search for words that could represent my next thought for the poem. Once I finished writing it, I took a few tries to record myself reciting it, and uploaded the result to SoundCloud that you see above. This was the only take actually, where my cat did not somehow interrupt me, so I got lucky on that one!

AUDIO ASSIGNMENT – An Original Poem

The assignment was to create an original poem, but I took it one step further. I decided to improvise the entire thing!

Now, I do actually write poetry and I wouldn’t call what I did here anything special. BUT I do think this was an interesting challenge for me. Maybe later in the semester I’ll continue to mess around with audio assignments like these. I used my computer’s audio recorder to pick up the sound and, honestly, this took about 5 minutes to complete. I gave myself a couple of tries before I settled on the idea of improvisation, which ultimately lead to our final (beautiful) product.

Here it is!

Tossed Salads & Scrambled Eggs

For my next trick, and therefore, my second task worth three-and-a-half stars instead of four, I wrote, and recited, an original poem based on the themes of Mitchell’s Hot Topics; this poem focused on the red, orange and yellow coloring scheme the site largely has, up to, and including, the chrysanthemum background, and how said flower resembled the illusion of dancing flames. The poem was aptly named “Atomic Garden,” after the Bad Religion song of the same name, and focuses on my on-again, off-again ability to comprehend current events, both at home and abroad, as well as my personal anxieties and long-standing fear of letting others down, if not myself; even now, I still suspect that doing what I think is right could still lead to my destruction, a behavioral pattern I’m trying to stop.

Why in the world should I be afraid,
Of Father Time giving me a failing grade,
When I’d rather stop to smell the flowers,
Than talk of the latest outrage for hours?
It isn’t like the neighbors will decide
When I can run, and where to hide.

I want to be where the people are,
But I don’t think they’d even want to see me from afar.
I want to be heard on the grandest stage,
But I fear what I say will unleash someone’s rage.
It isn’t that I’m bad at my craft. I’m not,
But these days, it seems that everyone’s getting caught.

The thing is, in darkness, there must be light.
In times of hunger, we must take a bite.
I have to stop being so paranoid,
About this so-called heart-shaped void.
There are issues to address! The people must know!
Stop hiding in your past, kid. Let everything show!

Well, if it will help me stop being so shy,
I’ll tell you my one true reason why.
The things that give me the most terrible fright
Are the things we don’t notice, because they’re hidden in plain sight.
The crysanthemum, that you hold in your hand,
Is perdition’s flame, burning alongside time’s sand.

Through the Forest: An Original Poem

Through the sunbeams in the leaves
the sturdy trunks support the sky.
Birds chirp quips about you as you walk.
Through the forest of yellow fog,
a hazy sea with swirls of green,
shadows stretching out their arms,
reaching out to lead you deeper.
I’ve long been in these woods, the heat
oppressive, the sense of my existence
Underwhelming. I walk, not to escape,
not to go deeper, not to forget
or remember. I walk through these woods
to hear the birds and the trees,
to feel the shadows comfort me.

I decided to do the Recite an Original Poem audio assignment, because it intrigued and attracted me. It’s been a long time since I’ve done anything with poetry, aside from occasionally reading and analyzing it, so I was very excited to get to stretch my fingers and mind and come up with something. For this assignment, you have to write a poem that matches your blog’s theme, and then just record it, without anything fancy. Just how you would describe your blog, and a plain recording of you reading it.

The hardest part was, of course, writing the poem. What I created is still rather raw (most of the things I create do not get the amount of polish they really need), but I think that suits the theme of my blog. I’m very open about my emotions and certain things, and I don’t necessarily try to censor what I say, but it is buried and vague sometimes.

There needed to be a focus on the appearance of my blog, of course, and that was easy to accomplish. It’s just trees. What I really wanted to do in this poem is have that sense of uneasiness that I think comes with some of my blog posts. There’s always something introspective about them, where I’m just kind of talking to myself about my problems. I figured a walk through a slightly unsettling forest would be a fun idea. I invite the reader to follow along, but you don’t have to if you’d rather not walk through a shadowy mindscape.

For the process:

It was really easy. Just write up the poem (possibly difficult if you don’t like poetry, which I find that a surprising amount of people don’t), and then record it in Audacity. Unfortunately, my recording equipment (which is honestly just a set of headphones) is a little wonky, which is why the sound gets muddled and watery for a line or two, but it happened every time I recorded, so we’ll just have to pretend it’s fine.

For fun: a drabble based around this assignment, posted on my Personal tumblr “blog” (excuse the untidiness of the layout, I have to work on it)

Heavy Metal In Space

For these of you who read the title and though “is this guy serious?”, yes, this is a poem about heavy metal in space. For this assignment, we were supposed to recite a poem about our blog. My blog has space pictures, and references a heavy metal album, so this seemed to be an appropriate topic. I’ll admit my poem is ridiculous, but then again “ridiculous” is the closest thing my blog has to a theme.

Image this future being a reverse 2112, where awesome music rules the future. People pass their time by zipping around the galaxy in their tricked out spaceships, listening to Judas Priest and the like. Sounds pretty awesome, right?

For the actual poem, I decided to use an alternating rhyme scheme. After I wrote this cheese-fest, I recorded it on my phone directly to the SoundCloud app on my phone. After that, all I had to do was upload it to my blog.

The Little Things in Life

For this Audio Assignment, worth 3.5 stars, we were asked to write a poem that sets the scene for our blog.  Since my blog is The Little Things in Life, I wrote a poem containing some of the little things that help make life better.  It is the simple things in life that can fill us with joy, so I included some of those.  To complete this, I wrote the poem and then simply recorded it straight into Sound Cloud and uploaded it onto the page.

Here is the poem:

“The Little Things in Life”

Peace in the sun,
Simplicity at sea.
Tall trees blowing,
Small birds singing.
Cool breeze in the air,
Soft sun on your skin.
Refreshment in the rain,
Things made anew.
Small words of kindness,
Little notes for others.
Cups of fresh coffee,
Hint of bubbly soda.
Little things in life,
Made to fill you with joy.
Brought out by others,
Or yourself if you look around.

And here is the reading of the poem by yours truly, as posted on Sound Cloud:

Steel’s City – Original Poem

The second assignment I did this week was create and recite an original poem. This assignment was worth 3.5 stars. Here is the assignment page.

I wrote my poem about my character, Billy “Saw” Steel. More specifically, it is about Steel’s home city, Detroit, and the neighborhood in which he lives. This is the first time I tried to make a poem that doesn’t have any type of rhyme scheme. I am kind of worried that it came off more as just a story instead of a poem, but let me know what you guys think!

Ruthless

An original poem inspired by the raw talent and life inside of the show THE WIRE. check her out. The ruthlessness of the game is just one thing but your life is ticking on THE WIRE!

Ruthless…Orignal Wire Poem

RUTHLESS

The second audio assignment which I had to do was to recite an original poem through this audio assignment with 3 1/2 stars.  I decided to go raw on this one as I found that audio may detract from what my original statement intended to be during my audio recording.   This was my own personal artistic choice.

I wrote this poem based on the struggles we have seen each character go through during each wire episode, as living the life of a drug dealer is not so glorified.

I looked back at some previous episodes from the Wire to become inspired.   I wrote this based on the constant dangers each character faces in The Wire as being shot at and death lurking around the corner is a harsh yet sad reality in this awesome show.   Please take a listen to my poem –Ruthless.
