Another audio assignment I worked on this week was creating dialogue between two characters which I took opportunity to dedicate this assignment to my western character, Riza, the saloon owner. This specific scene is when a young man, known as Mikey, is calling Tate, Riza’s husband, to follow up with a job interview at the saloon. Instead, he is confronted by Riza who sets him straight.
SCRIPT:
J: Hello (PAUSE) Mrs. Riza?
T: Yes. (PAUSE) Who’s calling?
J: This is Mike-y. (PAUSE) I spoke to your husband about a job at saloon.
T: Oh, yes! I remember, he spoke to me about your interview.
J: Yes, I was just wondering if it were possible I could speak with him?
T: Well, he is not here right now, but you can speak to me.
J: Oh (PAUSE) I see. It’s alright I’ll call back later.
T: He won’t be back till next week, boy.
J: Ah.
T: Just tell me, what can I do for you?
J: Well (PAUSE) I’d rather speak to a male. You know wit—
T: So you won’t speak to me because I am a girl? Well son—
J: No, I didn’t mean it like that. (PAUSE) I just don’t want to mess things up.
T: I’ll have you know that I run finances here at home and the saloon, so if you ever even want to think about working at the saloon, I will be waiting for an apology.
J: Mrs. Riza, I assumed wrong. Forgive me please.
T: Yeah you did. What? Do you think I’m here to cook and clean? No siri’ I am here to serve others, and I do that by finding pleasure through my everyday life—through running the saloon, so next time before you open your big mouth and start talking junk, I best believe you consider your choices.
J: I apologize, Mrs. Riza.
T: Yeah, well you can take that apology and stick it.
J: Mrs. Riza (PAUSE) Please…
T: (LAUGHS) I’m just messing with you, Mikey! (LAUGHS) You got the job.
J: Wait, what?
T: I was testing you to see if you could take the harsh comments of the saloon folks at time, and you passed. You answered with respect, and always apologized.
J: (CONFUSED) Oh
T: Come in tomorrow morning. 8 AM. I’ll start teaching you the ways of the saloon.
J: Oh, boy! Thank you very much Mrs. Riza.
T: No worries! (PAUSE) And call me Riza
J: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
T: Don’t worry about it, but if you ever underestimate my power, I will kick you in your bottom.
Audio Assignment:
Detective Longs got into a little trouble the other day. He decided that a cat needed to be saved from a tree. As soon as he climbed up the tree guess what happened. Yep. The cat hissed at Longs and gracefully made his way down the tree and sashayed off. So when I called for Longs to come down from the tree he looks at me and goes, “I’m stuck” and after I cursed him out like a proper Masshole, I called Callaghan to help come get him down. Unfortunately, he didn’t answer. This is the resulting message…
For this assignment I used Audacity to record the message. I also used the FreeSound website to get the sound effects of the telephone ringing and the message beep. I exported and uploaded the file to SoundCloud and embedded it into this post.
For one of my assignments this week, Erin Clark and I decided to do the assignment, Who Called? that was submitted by Demi Fulcher.
I collaborated with a fellow ds106er Erin Clark to complete this assignment! Erin and I met when we worked on our radio show together and our characters have a lot in common so it wasn’t hard to collaborate.
The assignment is to, “Record you self making a phone call as if you were a character off of the wire. The phone call has to be to another character from the wire. You can even make it a three way or four way call. You phone call can even be a voicemail as if someone didn’t pick up. Cutomize it as much as you like! The phone call has to be at least 2 minutes.” The assignment is worth 4 points.
Erin and I decided to make our characters friends while planning our radio show. Veronica and Shirley have a lot in common. They share a lot of the same interests. We wanted to keep their friendship going so we decided to collaborate.
Veronica left a message to Shirley first! This is her message:
In response to Veronica’s message, I recorded myself (as Shirley) on Audacity and then saved it as a WAV file. Once I saved it, I uploaded it to SoundCloud.
Here is Shirley’s message to Veronica:
I really liked this assignment because not only was I able to collaborate with a fellow ds106er which was awesome, but I also got to dig even deeper into my character’s life and I am really enjoying building off of Shirley’s life!
For our last assignment this week, July and I collaborated on Who Called? (4 stars). We set up this phone call to take place before our last two assignments from this week. In this phone call, Edie is attempting to contact Isabelle in order to gain information about the process Isabelle, a famous scientist, used to isolate the poison from the Aconite flower. Isabelle realizes this and is concerned.
We chose this assignment to set up the trip Edie takes to New York to meet Isabelle and what happens after. This trip can be seen in the story map we made, as well as the short story we wrote. In order to make the call, we used sound effects from freesound.org, and our voices. We also used the Audacity program to put them together. I wrote the script and afterward, we met up in Jepson Science Center to edit the script and record ourselves.
Here is our phone call:
This is the Who Called? assignments that is 4 points. I collaborated with Sharla and her character Mack. She has the first half of the conversation and I’m the second part. I did a previous assignment with her character, but this one is slightly different. In this one, Lukas isn’t trying to catch Mack but they are doing some underground work together. So, this assignment and the Four Icon one aren’t in the same universe.
So for one of our collaborative assignments, me and Patrick chose to do the “Who Called? assignment. My character was a prostitute, and is needy, and his character is macho and sleezy, so we decided that the interaction that most made sense is to make them in an unhealthy relationship. It’s obvious how unhealthy … Continue reading Who Called (4 stars) →
This week, we must do 10 stars of assignments from the assignment bank….HOWEVER we can do 10 stars from any category, but the catch is that all 10 must relate to our character and be collaborated with someone else’s character. AND WE GET EXTRA POINTS IF WE ACTUALLY WORK WITH THE PERSON WE’RE COLLABORATING WITH.
So all of my assignments this week will be done with Kelsey & her main squeeze Stella Vaughn
The first assignment I did this week was with my girl Kelsey. Her character, Stella Vaughn, and my character, Blair Morgan have been up to no good since their latest appearance on Noir Not the Father.
We did the assignment entitled: Who Called? (4 stars).
The task was as follows:
Record you self making a phone call as if you were a character off of the wire. The phone call has to be to another character from the wire. You can even make it a three way or four way call. You phone call can even be a voicemail as if someone didn’t pick up. Customize it as much as you like! The phone call has to be at least 2 minutes.
Side note, we didn’t know what the wire was so we ignored that part. YOLO. We’re rebellious. Get at us.
We decided to have a conversation about something that we had done on Noir Not the Father (You can listen in on Thursday (tonight) to see what that is all about).
We came up with a lovely script, that really portrayed the lives of our beautiful characters. We then recorded it in 2 takes. The first we messed up right away, but the second time was solid. GO US. Then we downloaded sound and mashed them into the voice recording.
Kelsey OBVIOUSLY played Stella, while I played Blair. We are very close to our characters at this point in the semester, and it is awesome how much of a storyline we have built between them from the radio show.
Here are the sounds we downloaded.
Telephone Hanging Up
Phone Ringing
Dial Tone
Phone Buttons
We put everything together and it came out to be 1:59.78 and we decided that was close enough to 2 minutes. We rounded up. I’m a math major and I say that it is okay to round up.
Here is our final piece of work.
4 down, 6 to go!
Veronica and Shirley are good friends and share the love of shopping. Since Veronica loves New York City and fashion she occasionally visits Shirley for a weekend. Unfortunately this time that Veronica called Shirley didn’t answer resulting in this voice-mail.
Me and Shirley’s creator, Stephanie White, formed our characters friendship during our ds106 radio show. We both decided to keep the friendship going with shopping and the big city. Shirley owns a department store and is very well off with her penthouse, just the life that Veronica wants. I added some key details and names to give the message some life. I also added some small aspects from our radio show involving Lawrence. For affect I added rotary phone dialing, ringing and then a hang up noise into my audio. Overall this was an easy assignment, I just had to think of the things to say. As well as pose questions for Shirley to answer. I recorded it all using Audacity. I hope Shirley calls me back soon!
My radio show group decided to write voice messages into the script so we could complete the assignment about leaving a message. This way, we could make sure each character had enough air time and also subtly add the theme of missed opportunities and mixed messages in the show (because literally nobody picks up their phone). Unfortunately, I couldn’t decide whether this fell under the “Movie Voice Machines” assignment (2.5 pts) or the “Who Called?” assignment (4 pts). I decided that the Movie Voice Machines assignment was the little recording that says “leave a message…” so this assignment better aligns with Who Called. I did not reach the 2 minute mark in the recording, so I’m only giving myself 3 points for this assignment, but it was still kind of difficult. In this voice message, Sasha Kellogg calls Sarah Mustard to tell her all about a date she is going on that evening. They are very good friends, but Sasha is always the one to go on dates, and Sarah spends her time at home, so their friendship works off their juxtaposition. Sasha is very excited, but is a little scatterbrained and keeps adding on to what she wants to say, which is why there are so many pauses in the conversation. Also, during the radio show, Sarah will listen to the recording and talk to her machine during the playback, so there had to be some pauses for that. The recording here is slightly different than the one in the radio show, but it is mostly the same. Just so you know, Bailey is Sarah Mustard’s cat.
I recorded my own voice for the speaking parts, but the other sounds are from Freesound.org. The phone ringing is “Antique Telephone Rings” by Oneirophile, the voice message is “Record your Message After the Tone” by MatteusNova, the actual beep is part of “bt_ans_machine” by hyderpotter, and the hanging up noise is “Phone Hangup” by jppi-stu. I really liked the beep from one answering machine, but the rest of the message was someone in a British accent, which would not make sense on Sarah Mustard’s machine, so I went with the voice from one message and the beep from another. The truly difficult part of this assignment was that I recorded the first bit when the phone was ringing at a separate time than the long speech. I listened back to it, and the two parts didn’t even seem like they came from the same person, they were so different! I rerecorded some of it, but even then it sounded a little off. I never knew how much our voices change on a whim, but I hope that doesn’t slow down the progress on our radio show! Besides that, the rest of the assignment went pretty smoothly, which is good. I certainly hope their date goes well!!
