Character Bird Calls

The Character Bird Call Assignment is worth 3.5 stars. I decided to do this assignment because I thought it could be a good way to introduce the character we’re going to use in our radio show, Jane Smith.

I decided to use these horn like sounds as a call because it reminded me of soccer whistles and Jane likes to play soccer. So, I think if we have something that reminds her of something that she likes, she will be more likely to be attracted to it.

Here’s the call for Jane:

Calling All Comedians

This audio assignment is called “Character Bird Calls” the description for this assignment is to “Like some people use special whistles to attract birds, your task is to create an 30 second or less audio file that might be used to “call” a particular character from a movie, tv, or real life. It cannot feature voices, but sounds only (try freesounds). Write a description why this sound would be attractive to the character, why it would be effective (be inventive, write a story about it).”

I chose to do this assignment because I do not have much experience with audio editing and this sounded like a good way to get my foot in the door and get some experience with it. I decided to call it “Calling All Comedians” because the audio clip I created was of laughter and laughter is always associated with comedy. Now I know that I did not choose a specific character but instead a type of character. I feel that this is just as representative of the assignment. This audio clip tells a story of a group of people having a good time listening to a comedy act and it is told without voices, which I think makes it especially unique.

Here is my audio clip via SoundCloud:

This was not a particularly difficult assignment to do, once I got the hang of Audacity. That being said, I used the audio editing software Audacity because it is easier to use then Garage Band on Mac. I started by going to Freesound to get my raw audio file. Here is a shot of what it looked like on Freesound:

After I found my raw audio, I had to download it to my desktop (you must be a member to download files but its free so go ahead and register). Once you have found you file or files, you must import them into Audacity by going to File-Import-Audio and selecting you file from your desktop. Once you have imported it, its now time to edit. Your editing will look something like this:

Once you are done editing your files, you need to export them in order to upload them to Soundcloud. To do that you go to File-Export Audio-Save and that box will look like this:

Once you have done that, you need to go to Soundcloud and upload you completed audio file!

“Jewel’s” Calling…G.W.D. (Gym, Work, Drink)

When considering the five points to be dedicated to my character this week, the “Character Bird Calls” assignment grabbed my attention because “Jewel” is attracted to specific things in life, given her nature and profession. By completing this assignment, I am able to add a bit of depth to her character, as well. The prompt … Continue reading “Jewel’s” Calling…G.W.D. (Gym, Work, Drink)

Character Call

The last assignment that I did this week was the Character Call. It said to make an audio that would be an attractant to a  character. I chose to do one for my character Conway who is a police officer. I used to soundbible and audacity to mash up there audio files. I used a shotgun fire followed by a car crash and then a shotgun reloading. This will definitely bring Conway running to the action. This assignment was very pleasing and fun. The original assignment can be found here. It is worth 2 stars.

Shadow’s Calling

Character’s Bird Calls (2pts):

This call is to specifically call my character, Shadow, from hiding when needed be. It was created entirely from FreeSounds.org and Audacity. It is short because Shadow doesn’t need a long call, he is always listening. This call is a mix of a whistle and sounds from playing water glass. I choose to create it this way because I was thinking that if you were trying to call shadow you wouldn’t want something loud and obvious you need something quiet but distinct to be recognized by Shadow.

Character Bird Calls or Guy Call

Character Bird Calls: 2 stars

For my first assignment, i decided to do the Character Bird Call. The call I chose was that of a ford mustang revving its engine. This call would be used to call  in all my buddies from back home along with my family. Growing up, i was always around mustangs and other loud vehicles. All of my buddies back home have mustangs or loud cars and trucks so this call is perfect to attract them. Every time we hear a loud car or truck  pass by, all of our heads always turn towards that direction.

While doing this assignment, i could not stop thinking about the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Call commercial.

Calling Veronica Smith, Calling Veronica Smith

2 Stars

For this assignment I was too create a “bird call” that would used for a character. I choose to use my character, Veronica Smith. She loves fashion, music and the social life. Which is why I used the sounds that I did. To catch Veronica’s attention the sound of high heels, music, or the ringing of her rotary phone would work. I decided to make the call go full circle and made the high heel noise start and end the piece. I edited in Audacity and got the sounds from Freesound.org. The hardest part of this assignment was actually finding it. The audio assignment back in a little skimpy on assignments that are character driven. Especially since all the character ones I originally did in the first audio week.

Want to Attract a Sylvia?

2 Stars

For my last audio assignment for this week, I decided to do the bird call assignment where you make an audio clip to attract a certain person. I decided that my certain person that I am trying to attract should be my character dossier Sylvia! The sounds I chose for this assignment was a cat call, bar scene/party sound in the background, pouring of an alcoholic beverage (PSA – don’t listen to this if you have to go to the bathroom!), and clinking of glasses, p.s. I found all of these through freesound. I used Audacity to compile the sounds together and overlap them on top of the bar scene sound, much of this was simple copying and pasting the sounds together and adjusting sound volumes so you could hear the sounds I wanted to emphasize.  Since my character enjoys the party and social scene I thought this would be a good decoy to attract her!

Character Bird Calls

When I read this assignment directions, I instantly had an idea. Now me and my best friend have a lot of adventures, especially now that we are 21. There is one sound that will always make us happy. I can make this sound anywhere in the house and I know she will come running to […]

Bird Call for Martin Sloan

I created a bird call that would attract the adult Martin Sloan from the TwZone episode “Walking Distance.” However, it has a twist at the end that is a reminder that “you can’t go back.” See tumblr link for details.
