Music creates Feelings

This song brought me back to memory lane. Like I said in my short message it’s funny when you’re playing music in certain situations in life and whenever you listen to that specific song, memories of that specific situation reoccur. This isn’t the only song that reminds me of situations in my life. But this one was a special one because of the good times I had with this person. We always thought we were going to be together for a long time but look at us now huh? Whenever I play this music I think of her, but I don’t listen to it that much, mostly because I have moved on. For this assignment, What A Song Might Mean To You, I found the song on youtube and then embedded it on here. I then used Voice memos on my iPhone to record my short message and I uploaded it to Soundcloud.

Sound effects

The second assignment bank prompt I chose was “Sound effects” which asks you to upload your own sound to freesound.org. Preferably one that hasn’t been done before. This one was challenging because I really had to think of an uncommon sound which took me a while. Every sound I thought of I would look up and find it. I thought maybe something on your phone like a sound specific to an app wouldn’t have been done and then I decided to do a facetime call. No one had done this before so it was perfect. This is the sound you hear when you are facetiming someone and waiting for them to answer. I uploaded my sound to freesound.org and am waiting approval. It is called “facetime”. For now you can listen to my sound on soundcloud. I made the sound using audacity and recording it wasn’t hard. It was just hard finding the mic and I tried several times because it would either be too loud and muffly or too far away.

A SOUND EFFECT I NEVER HEARD

? Heard you slip right through the door
You whispered just a word
Then you uploaded it from the floor
With a sound effect I’ve never heard ?

Golden ‘Melody’ Earring

Arggh! I can never find the sound effects that I want! I decided to try out the assignment, Sounds Effects, which “is a short and simple assignment. Most everyone uses freesound for various audio assignments, but sometimes, you cannot find quite what you are looking for. This assignment is to upload your own sound or sound effect to freesound, preferably something which is lacking.”

Well, there are a lot of sounds missing from the freesound library, but I chose to add an indoor noise that might come in handy at a later date. We have an unusual doggy gate at our house, unusual in the sense that it’s a very tall, wooden partition that cuts off the kitchen from the family room/living room areas. We started out with a normal-sized, normal-looking doggy gate, but when we got our Doodle, we soon discovered that she could jump very high! She even managed to jump this high gate that we currently have, although she only did it once and it was more of a “stumble-over-the-gate” action than a “jump-over” action, and she was very motivated to get to the other side. It is a deterrent 99% of the time though.

This gate produces some nice squeaky and wobbly sounds though when you open and close it, so I exaggerated the noise and hit record on my phone. As a bonus, there is an ambient TV noise in the background, which is a noise I hear almost 24/7. The TV is always on in the upstairs loft, much to my discontent (my room is next to the loft).

After I had my sound, I added it to the freesound library. Here is my recording:

Burgers?

For one of my Audio Assignments this week, I decided to record and upload my own sound to Freesound, a free sound sharing platform.  The assignment said to pick a sound that I thought was lacking from the website.  I was inspired by my dad making us dinner.  I heard him frying up some burgers on the stove and decided to record it.

I opened up the sound recording APP VoiceRecorder on my iPhone, recorded the sound of the burgers, then saved it to my phone as an MP3.  I then sent the MP3 file to my computer.

After I received the MP3, I uploaded it to my Freesound account.

Then end result is kind of fuzzy sounding.  The burgers frying up could easily be mistaken for radio static, or even rain.

This Girl is on Fireeeeee

For my final audio assignment of the week I decided to work on a two star assignment called sound effects. By doing so it brought me to a total of ten stars. Any who I felt this assignment was going to be another good way to continue contributing and creating content for my groups radio show project “Girl Power”. This assignment essentially asked that individuals either utilize their own sounds or pull sounds from free sound to create a track of sound effects. My group has a google doc where we are working on our project and while working on it I saw that Professor Bond mentioned a really good idea to think about. He shared that we should think about using or creating background music or sound effects to have in our show to create a story and consistency. I think this is a fabulous idea and I used that in some way to inspire me for this assignment.

I used audacity to create my sound effects/background music… shocking! Prior to using audacity I went on to freesound.com and pulled numerous free sounds to import into my track. From there I imported them into audacity where I played around with the various music. I copied, pasted, cut, faded in and faded out the music samples numerous times to create an overall track that I thoroughly enjoyed. From there I exported it as an MP3 and uploaded it to Soundcloud so it could be easily viewed and shared.

Initially the start of my track is suppose to sound like its fading in from a commercial so it begins with a slow increase of what sounds like cameras clicking taking pictures then fades into Alicia Key’s singing a short sample from her song “Girl on Fire”. Then from there it fades to what sounds like subtle spy music which goes on for some time to then end with the Alicia Keys short sample and the cameras clicking again. I designed this the way I did because I wanted the cameras and Alicia Keys to be an intro from a previous commercial or segment basically kicking off our next topic, then the spy music is suppose to be on while we are discussing whatever particular topic at that time. From there I have Alicia play again and the cameras because that is suppose to be an exit cutting to the next segment or commercial break.

I wanted my sound effects/background music to have structure, that’s why I designed it the way I did. Overall I think it turned out fairly well. If my group decides to use something like this I certainly may have to go back in and make the track longer or shorter depending on our topics. With the theme of our show being women empowerment in the secret agent genre, I wanted to incorporate the Alicia Keys clip because I think the song is incredibly important towards our subject. While I don’t nearly have enough of the song in the track a little snippet of it does a good job at getting the point across. Ultimately I think I was successful and am glad I was able again to use this assignment towards my groups radio show!

Traversing Magmoor

This sound is a remix of Metroid Prime’s Magmoor Cavern theme, by knocking on a desk (I recorded this with my phone.)

Guuuurlll you know we need new sounds!

So for my final assignment, I chose to do a 2 star to complete my 12 stars and upload a new sound onto freesound.org. I went a little overboard and uploaded 3 new sounds which I think will be needed, and are funny. I Made those specific sounds/phrases because those are Solenya’s (my character’s) favorite sayings. He is a very sassy wizard when he wants to be, and he doesn’t like to take anyone’s shit. So when Tade does something stupid a “get out of my face” is always in order. My sounds aren’t uploaded yet because they are still awaiting moderation, so the freesound people need to tell me if they’re good enough or not. I believe they will be because I didn’t plagiarize anything. So I will let you all know in the coming weeks if they were uploaded or not!

A Rainy Day

This is my third audio assignment for this week. In this assignment, we had to upload a new sound or sound effect to freesound.org that we recorded. I chose to do this assignment because I had trouble finding some of the sounds that I wanted to use for my first assignment this week. I wanted to help people who will use freesound.org in the future find the sound effect that they are looking for when they are trying to create their new recording.

I was on my way to eat dinner with my mom yesterday and it started to rain. She turned on the windshield wipers and this assignment popped into my head. I thought I should record the sound of the windshield wipers and post it on freesound.org. I knew that there probably weren’t be very many options to choose from under this category and if there were, there might not have been any good ones that people would want to use. I checked when I got home and there were some recordings under this category, but I still felt like I should add my recording to the list because there could never be too many options. Some of the other sounds might not have been what other people were looking for and I am hoping that this one will help those people find what they need for their recordings.

The sound is saying that it “has not been moderated yet,” so I also posted it to SoundCloud just incase it takes awhile for it to get moderated.
