Making a fictional Radio Ad
For my second audio assignment this week, I did the the “Fictional Radio Ad” assignment, to contribute content to our radio show. This ad, set in a superhero infested universe, advertises “Supersurance” – insurance to cover superhero related damages.
I wrote a small script for this, and recorded it myself in audacity. I then found some triumphant music from Creative Commons and added it in the background.
Here’s another commercial for the radio project. Made with Audacity.
For the next two weeks, we are working on our radio show in groups. As a part of it, I have been tasked with creating an ad to play during our show.
To create my ad, I used an online voice recorder as I currently have no voice from being sick. Though the voice sounds a bit like a robot, I think it works for a radio station ad. Then, I used freesound and found a background for my radio commercial. I think the background music sounds like something you would listen to on a real radio station. To put together the components of my ad, I used Audacity, adjusting them to the way I wanted them to sound.
I decided to make my ad about a meet and greet for my superhero as we are largely incorporating our characters into our radio show.
For this assignment I was to make a fictional radio ad for a fake company or imaginary business. My ad is for the company “Real Fake Doors” that sells real fake doors, doors that won’t open. This is not my original idea, but my ad is a take of the original one from Rick and Morty S1E8. To get an idea of the original, here is a clip of it from the show.
I had decided to do a spin off of this ad because Rick and Morty is one my favorite (and most hyped) shows to watch. A lot of the dialogue is improve. I am nowhere as good as the professionals so I needed to sit down for a little bit and think up of some catchphrases and a direction I wanted the ad to go.
And here is my Ad
This was a pretty straightforward assignment. Using audacity and its tools was easy. The hard part was writing a script and create a natural flow throughout the ad. It was made even more difficult because my fake voice isn’t that convincing and wasn’t natural for me to do. It wasn’t too difficult, but it did take some time. Unlike most assignments this one was actually pretty fun to do.
This was based on the assignment found here (http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/fictional-radio-ad/).
This assignment was a ton of fun to work on mainly because I love the twisted world of invader zim. Everything there is grotesque and horrible so it is a ton of fun to separate yourself and pretend to be there sometimes.
This is my response to the Fictional Radio Ad assignment, worth 4 stars. I had to make an imaginary radio advertisement. I chose to promote the election of King Harambe’s successor. I tied this back to the semester’s overarching theme of the internet by building it on an internet meme, Harambe. I don’t know when Harambe first got labeled as a King, but I ran with that idea. I recorded my voice in Reaper. For the background music, I improvised on my MIDI keyboard with the piano sound loaded in Garritan Personal Orchestra. I wanted the music to start out dark and somber and then light up with hope as I discuss the prospect of a new leader. I decided improvising was better than composing something because that made the tune more spontaneous than something that was more carefully crafted. I also recorded without a metronome so the tempo would ebb and flow with the mood of the song.
I made a radio ad for one of this weeks audio assignments. I wanted to make an ad that could go in our radio show, The Internet gene. One of the topics in our show would be about the health risks of the internet gene. I decided to make a cliche radio ad about a law firm advertising that they can help with a certain illness. I based it off a lot of the ads I hear on the radio today about law firms trying to get settlements for certain people. I made up the fake name the Taylor Law firm and gave them a fake number. To do this project I used audacity to make the recording and used the change pitch option to deepen my voice. I then posted it to soundcloud.
For my first audio assignment, I created a fictional radio ad worth 4.5 stars that could be played during our broadcast. I chose to do an ad about this because of the creepy a$$ clowns that have been terrorizing the country, and there was one on my street yesterday. I am not happy with it.
Because there has been clown sightings in Fredericksburg, I chose to have the ad coming from our police chief, David Nye. I used to Fredericksburg Police Station website to find his name, so hopefully he is okay with that.
Next, I recorded my message on Audacity and changed the pitch to about a -15% change. I then used http://freesound.org and searched for “commercial background music,” which is where I found “Goodnight” by TexasMusicForge. I inserted background music on Audacity and lowered the volume, and then saved it all together for my ad.
The assignment was pretty simple because I enjoy using Audacity, and I have some experience with it now!
Congratulations! You’ve been hired by your favorite fantasy world to create a radio ad for the imaginary business or event of your choice. Be as creative as you can and background music is highly encouraged. Simply give all the details about the business or occasion and maybe even create a clever slogan to go along with it! For mine, I made an ad for Linus’ Pumpkin Patch/ the Great Pumpkin Festival from PEANUTS, however yours can be anything you wish! I highly recommend stripping background music from a youtube video and recording your voice/putting everything together in garage band or a similar application. Afterwards, go ahead and string some photos together to create an iMovie file that can be easily shared on YouTube. Have Fun!
