Sound Construction Site

So, audio editing is a work in progress for me. I spent a lot of time working on each assignment, only to finally realize I wasn’t going to modern, electronic Mozart on my first try. My pieces aren’t going to sound like what I hear on the radio or at DJ event, if they did, I would already have very lucrative career in those fields. I accepted these were decent first drafts for someone who has zero experience with the medium. So, please enjoy!

Song mashup

Rookie mistake number one – after uploaded this to SoundCloud, it was taken down for copyright reasons. Truth is, I don;t know how other people did this assignment without breaching copyrights, other than it appears to can mix audio within the SoundCloud site? And I already spend a plethora of time learning a fraction of Audacity this week – no way this was getting redone by the end of the week. I’ve loaded it here as a file and apologize for that.

Rookie mistake number two – pretty much everything else. I was able to learn to overlay, to fade in and out, to adjust amplification, tempo, and speed, but the tracks still didn’t blend together as seamlessly as I wanted. Adding to to the frustration, I could only reverse editing decisions one at a time, so if I decided that I didn’t like the way it sound because of a change I made three steps previous, they only way I knew to correct it was undo the last three steps and redo the two I wanted to keep.

For your (somewhat) listening pleasure. I choose two contemporary songs from different genres with the same theme and almost identical names.  “Strip That Down” by Liam Payne and “Strip It Down” by Luke Bryan.

Strip That Down

Sound Effect Story

This one, I;m actually quite proud of. I used ten different sound effects to create the story and was careful to include as much detail as I could. For instance, adding a high heel step or two between the bathroom stall closing and the sink turning on. the end result, in my opinion accurate depicts a panic attack in public.

Mashup: Runaway by Aurora and The Night we Met by Lord Huron

This is a mashup assignment worth 4 stars. This took me a long time to complete and I wish I was able to edit it a little more so it ran a little smoother but I am happy with how it turned out! I chose these songs because I love both of them and I thought since they had similar vibes to their songs they would work well together. I was correct and was surprised that when I was finished and listened to it Lord Huron’s song sounded like it was supposed to be there! It seemed as more of an addition to the song to create more dynamic in the song.

Mix of XO-Loc Mashup

I made a combination of two songs Location and Xo Tour Life, to show the different in beat and vocals. In Xo its a faster pace, with less sentimental lyrics but in Location it’s a slow beat and more emotional lyrics. Both these songs are at the top of the Hip-Hop genre but they are very much different from each other. Lil Uzi Vert is a rap artist while Khalid is a soul-pop type of singer.

I combined them both by using Audacity, the effects I used to change it up (so I don’t get copyrighted) was Change Speed, Fade In, and Change Pitch. None of them were super noticeable differences from the original piece of work. The greatest different is I made Khalid sound a bit like a girl,  but it maintained the same pitch and tempo from the song.

Top 5 Best Rap Artist?

This is my fourth audio assignment of the week. In this assignment we had to create a mashup of songs we like to listen to. I chose this assignment because I love to listen to music. I listen to it all the time whether I am at home, at work, or doing homework. I thought it would be fun to create a mashup of a few songs that I enjoy listening to. I knew that I would be able to create this assignment without having too much trouble because I already had some experience using Audacity in some of the other assignments that I did earlier this week.

I chose to not just make a mashup of songs I like to listen to, but make a mashup of just Drake songs I like to listen to since I already incorporated him into another post this week. Some people argue that Drake will end up in the top 5 for best rap artists of all time by the end of his career because of how long he will be making music and how many hits he has been able to come out with throughout his career so far. I was able to add at least one song from most of his albums and use an audio technique that we learned this week by adding transitions between songs. I used a different DJ “scratch” sound effect that I found on freesound.org in between each song change. This allows there to be a smooth transition between each song and makes sure the viewer knows when a new song is starting. I used a DJ scratch sound because I was using music to create this mashup and I thought it would fit in perfectly.
