Sick Beat

Check out my sick beat project that I created with Garage Band for Mac on Soundcloud!

Not the Sickest Beat in the World, Just a Tribute

For this fun little audio assignment, the task was to create a sick beats to end all sick beats. I spent a lot of time just trying to figure out where to even start. I’m not much of a musically minded person, so I felt like a log adrift until I remembered that the sickest beat has existed for many years now, since my childhood. I took it upon myself to do Strongbad proud and remaster this king of beats. If you don’t quite get the reference yet, it will only get more confusing after listening. Enjoy!

Sick beat!

I downloaded these sounds from free sounds.org. This is the link to the original assignment. This assignment is 3 stars. I used a house drum, rattle drum, and timpani drums to create my awesome beat in Audacity. Let me know what you think!

Sick Beat -3 Stars

For this assignment we were to create a sound to have a sick beat!

Here is my creation below:

For this project, I used a pre existing beat from Freesound.org called Phaser Chords in Serum by staticpony 1.

After downloading the sound, I imported it into Audacity and stretched the first part of the imported sound to add some intro.

After that, I simply cut and pasted the beat over and over in the right spots to make sure they sounded interlooped and flowed easily. Then towards the end, I faded out the beat to bring the beat to an end.

And after all of that, I exported and named my newly made beat as “Sick Beat” after this assignment and imported it to my soundcloud!

My Sick Beat

I used GarageBand to mix all of the sounds together to make a “Sick Beat.” Feel free to click on my tutorial video to see how I put this all together.

Sick Beat Tutorial

Check out this sick beat

For this audio assignment I chose to make a sick beat. I am really into hip hop and always wanted to try this so I went to http://freesound.org to find sounds to enhance the beat. I only had to use three sounds which nice. Somehow the the sounds went on for like 6 min after the initial beat ended. I apologize for that, I tried to delete it but it did not work for some reason. Please let me know how the beat is if you end up hearing it. Thank you!

I made a sick beat

First off, I was inspired to make my sick beat by my classmate, Christina’s sick beat. I also used freesound.org to acquire all of the sounds I needed to make my beat, and I wanted to go for a much more techno-inspired beat for mine. I used 808s, distorted snares, and claps to make my intro, while for the last part of mine I took a clip of a song and distorted it, put a reverb on it, added some bass and adjusted a few more odds-and-ins to get my final result.

I really wanted to start with a standard 808 style beat, and to progressively build up the energy as best as I could. Let me know what you think! I had a lot of fun playing around with the sound mixers for this one.

(Also, sorry for the swear word in the song title, I saved it as that in my computer and totally forgot to edit it before I uploaded it.)

And the beat goes

Audio is a great way to tell a story. Just by hearing a series of sounds it allows the possibility for an individual to draw up an image in their head designed off of what they hear.

For my first audio assignment of the week I decided to participate in a three star assignment called sick beat. This project asked that individuals create a beat out of sounds they may have found on freesounds.org or whatever they have recorded or can find. I thought this would be a fun assignment to do because I have some experience, however not as much as I’d like, with creating some form of music or audio. Last semester I took a music technology class here at UMW as a lower level elective for my major. In this class we learned about music and played around with applications such as Audacity. That being said I actually had a folder or compilation of different drum sounds that was needed for the class. I decided to use these different sounds to create a sick beat for this particular assignment as opposed to using free sounds.org. I’m incredibly appreciative with the slight experience that I have with audacity because it made creating this assignment a bit easier.

To create this assignment I first opened audacity. Once I had the application up and running I then proceeded to open numerous drum files within audacity that I wanted to use for my beat. Following those two simple steps I began to just mess around with cutting, copying, pasting, etc. the files. I used many differing drum sounds so I just played around with what I thought would be intriguing to hear. Ultimately after some time, the short drum files turned into a two minute drum beat. Upon finishing my assignment I then saved it as a .mp3 so that I could upload it to my Soundcloud where I would ultimately have the ability to share this sound with the entire class.

Creating this beat wasn’t as hard as I initially thought and was actually quite fun. I think the hardest part was figuring out what sound went well together and what didn’t. Ultimately I still think the audio I created could use some work. I am obviously not a master at this, but am impressed with my first time creating something of this caliber.

While working on this assignment I strove to tell a story using different drum beats. Essentially I wanted my audio to sound like one sick drum solo, but with me being a beginner I believe I tell more of a story that fades into different drum solos. I believe the sound switches every couple of seconds and creates a different vibe based on the audio files I used. Ultimately I believe I tell various stories in this two minute audio beat. Audio is important when telling a story, this assignment opened my eyes to a different side of story telling that I wasn’t too familiar with. That being said I enjoyed every second of it. Sometimes we just need to sit back and listen and let our imagination paint the story in our head.

pop pop pop snap

i made a beat using a poping noise with my lips and a snapping noise with my fingers. my group, The Legends, will be doing a talk show for our radio show and i thought this would be an interesting and useful transition sound.

i was thinking in the realm of npr’s radiolab, and how they have these dynamic sounds from one character or prospective to another. so while this beat does not explicitly deal with our theme it does meat the needs of my group’s radio show.

i used my iPhone’s voice memos to record the sounds, then i used soundcloud to chop them up and order them in a sequence that was pleasing to my ear.

A sick beat it IS!

LOL!  Wow, for some reason, this one was much much harder than I thought.  The assignment was to come up with a ‘sick beat’ of my own.  I used Audacity and literally made one noise with my mouth, tapped on my laptop and made another noise with my lips and let me tell you, trying to get all of those in a sync to sound ANYTHING like a beat is not at all easy!  But… here goes…
