12%, With Only Sound Effects

The prompt

So, I chose a scene for this project that could not be more difficult to recreate. I love movies, so I was drawn to the prompt. My favorite scene in any movie ever is the “12% Scene” from the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy (if you’ve seen the movie you know which one I’m talking about). The issue is, it is five characters talking. There’s no action, there’s barely any movement. So how do I translate that to sound effects?

The first step was to turn the voices into sound effects. I tried to match the rhythm of the voices with the percussive instruments I had. For Rocket’s voice, I scratched and tapped my desk, mostly because I could sustain it for the laugh. For Star-Lord’s, I scratched a tape dispenser I have that’s shaped like a hedgehog because it was easy to hear and I could control volume. For Drax, I knocked on a plastic drawer to get the low pitch. For Groot, I tapped and rubbed the pins from a now delofted bed together because I could sustain it and change the pitch (that’s mostly how Groot communicates). For Gamora, I tapped a flower pot to get the higher pitch of her voice. I recorded all the voices on Audacity and filtered out the sound of the air conditioner.

While there’s not a lot of movement in the scene, there is some. The fact that the characters stand up is important, so I recorded moving my chair to signify that. But yeah, a different scene would have been easier.

Recreate A Short Movie Using Only Sounds

My favorite movie, Saving Private Ryan, gave me the perfect opportunity to recreate a short movie only using sounds. I decided to use the Omaha Beach Scene!! Enjoy!

Sounds and Movie

For this assignment I stretched the guidelines to work with my radio show project. Guidelines were to use 4 sounds to create a movie and I used Dirty Dancing as my movie of choice. I did use recordings of words to go along with my movie as well as music. This assignment was worth 4 stars.

I first made an Audacity for my movie of sounds by recording different pieces and editing them to sound different but still recognizable. After that, I saved the file as a MP3 to open in a new Audacity project where I recorded my voice reading a script I created to introduce the movie clip. I found some elevator music to start and transition between my voice and the movie sounds from freesound.org. After I did some editing to my voice I was finally happy to save the file as another MP3 to upload to soundcloud for this assignment.

I am proud of this assignment and really feel like I’m getting the hang of Audacity it did not take me as long as I thought because I knew what I wanted to do with the sounds and knew how to do it. The most time consuming part was the final editing making sure I was happy with the project before I exported it to soundcloud. I am happy with how it turned out and I plan on using this clip as well to help my group with our Radio Project next week. I am not sure why I keep picking musical’s from the 80’s I just really like them and the music is always so catchy!

Guess that Movie

For this weeks audio I did Recreate A Short Movie Using Only Sounds. This assignment was to take one of your favorite movies or scene from a movie and tell the story using sound effects Rated 4 Stars

I wanted to this assignment because it helped me brainstorm for our group radio show. I found all the sounds on Free sound. The sounds weren’t exactly what I was looking for but it worked.

Try to guess which (80’s Movie) it is!

Recreate a Movie Using Only Sounds

So as always, I wanted to make sure I incorporated the radio show, my groups, been working on so I turned it into a radio game show!

Again, I actually don’t hate it and I’m getting the hang of the “radio announcer” voice. I really like the intro music I found too. The only thing I don’t like are the noises I picked. They were really weird after I listened to the show in whole and kind of vague, but I guess that was the point. I just wish I had found better noises.

Guess This Movie!

For this assignment I attempted to recreate the truck chase scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. I attempted to whistle the main theme song for Indiana Jones, then found horse galloping sounds and gunshots on freesounds.org. I used Audacity to blend them together as best as I could! I had a lot of fun with this and this assignment taught me how to use Audacity. I feel confident enough to use it again in upcoming assignments.

A Movie Told With Sound

It was a challenge, but I managed to somewhat retell a movie scene using only sound.

An MP3 Movie [????]

On this adventure of alternative storytelling, I present to you my most recent project – a favorite movie of mine told only with the help of audio!

The details of this challenge were to pick a favorite movie of yours, and recreate it using only sound effects. I won’t tell you ahead of time what the movie is so that you can guess if you like. The answer can be found at the bottom of this post.

Without further ado…

I loved the process of this assignment. It really helped me understand this alternative concept of storytelling through audio. I enjoyed that you needed to explain/storytell key points in the film through audio. It really re-invents the classic concept of storytelling!

Can’t guess what movie this is? Its… Love Simon!!

Mortal Combat Told Through Music and Sound

This was very difficult for me and I was not a fan at all. I need a lot more practice. I think it would have been a lot more fun had I known what I was doing with the audio editor.

The only silver lining was I loved playing Mortal Kombat with my older brother. I remember we were both very excited about the movie coming out.

Shark-Bait

My favorite movie is Jaws, so what better movie to recreate. I used free sounds from Freesound and then uploaded everything to Audacity.
