Daily Sounds

Recording daily sounds was an assignment that made my roommates think I’m crazy. I walked around the house with my phone recording noises of my alarm, flushing the toilet, using the microwave, locking my door, and more. It’s interesting to listen to the sounds isolated. I never really think about all the noises in my life. Listen for yourself!

Collier: Everyday Sounds

Here is a recording of some everyday sounds that I thought would be interesting for this project. These sounds are except sounds. I walked down the block recording every sound and conversation I heard. Busses. cars, trucks, manholes and so forth. I arranged these sounds to make a composition that sort of tells a story in terms of what you hear. My objective is to get the listener to identify the sounds they hear in the recording and become more aware of the sounds they hear everyday.

Berlin Tea Story

Tea is essential for my daily routine. I presume if I had not any tea during the day, I would sleep all day. I do not know, but I rather mind exploring this assumption.

In the ds106 audio assignment Familiar Sounds we are asked to record some sounds that are familiar to us but maybe strange to the listener. Noises from making tea may not be strange to anyone, but I added some atmosphere, with which I intend to evoke thinking of a person in an apartment house in a city. I actually wanted to create the impression of a lonely person and this way I added a music box sound. For me music boxes are a symbol of someone living in their own world with little relation to the outside. Yet the moment of sipping  tea is not any more about being lonely or living in a city, it is just a moment of peace and satisfaction.

Try and figure out sounds that happen everyday! You might surprise yourself by either knowing what it is our not knowing at all! Have fun trying to guess the sound! I used an app on my iPhone called SoundCloud! This is a great challenge that actually will challenge yourself!

I went around my house recorded daily sounds! Good luck trying to guess them!

Whats the Sound?

Here’s the answers to the sounds! Did you get them right?!

The Serger Story…

When I saw the two star Familiar Sounds assignment, I knew that I could use the sound I recorded from my serger. This is the sound story created by serging the cuffs of a pair of pants. As I serge I go quicker sometimes than I do others and often have to stop to adjust my fabric, which you can hear in the sound story.

In order to make the sound story, I leaned my iPod Touch against the serger as it ran, using my eyeglasses to hold it in place, which I forgot to take a picture of. I recorded the story in Voice Memos before emailing it to myself and shortening it in Audacity.

Some of the audio from this soundstory was used in our radio show as well.

Tlick-Tlock

A familiar sound in my room, pretty annoying to everyone else. It’s the ticking of my wall clock, a sound I never noticed until I had my boyfriend stay the night. It kept us both up at night once it was pointed out to me, it is an easy fix though all I need to do is turn on my fan (which has a timer so I can fall asleep before it goes off without having to have it on all night). It’s almost like Captain Hooks ticking croke clock. What I really wanted to do for this project was this awful Howling sound the dogs make whenever my sister leaves for work in the morning.but of course they never do it when you are ready to record… they started after I put my phone away and went back to my room for some unknown reason. probably just to spite me.

CAN YOU HEAR ME?!

Hmmmm, well if you’ve missed me in the past week, I’m sorry, but I had the opportunity to take a break from doing ALL my schoolwork, and I took full advantage of it. While I haven’t posted anything in a week, I have been working on different things for DS106…aka WRTZ Radio, which is a group project which was assigned and will air sometime earlier next week! (I’ll provide more details so you can listen LIVE!!)

Anyways, I’m easing back into doing work after being a bum at my parents house for the weekend, so here comes the first post of Audio Weeks 7&8!

I’ve got to admit, audio is one of my LEAST favorite things to work with. Sure, I may know WHAT would sound good, but I can never get it just right…So I’m going to jump in there this week and give it my best!! This week we have to complete 10 stars worth of assignments…which doesn’t sound like a lot…but them I remember, “Audio Assignments”…shit, now it’s a daunting task!

So I open up the Audio Assignment Repository and find the “Familiar Sounds” assignment. Looks like it may be okay to work with. It asks “Record some of the sounds that you hear daily that may be unfamiliar to others and build it into an audio story.”, which seems similar to our Sound Effects Story in the earlier weeks. I didn’t really have anything to look at on what I’m supposed to do(the only person that submitted the assignment has had their website go inactive…or something)…So I’m doing this assignment my way!

Here is my sound:

Open the bay, let in the dark.
Another emergency, we embark.
Same shit, different nights.
We turn on our flashing lights.
You’ll hear the wail and see red and white.
But you’ll never know this is connected to the light.

Familiar Sounds

We all have sounds that are familiar to us, but strange to others. Examples include the creak in the stairs, the ticking of the clock, or traffic if you life on a road, etc. Record some of the sounds that you hear daily that may be unfamiliar to others and build it into an audio story.
