Try to escape

Sound Scapes (4 1/2) stars told us to use only found sounds in order to create a sound piece. I chose this assignment because it reminded me of one of the assignments we had done previously in this class, so I had a basic idea of how to start it. Another reason why I chose it was because I thought it would be a good assignment to relate to my character and possibly to use for our radio show “the MaNOIRpulators.”

In order to d this assignment, I picked a bunch of sounds to use. Some are similar to the ones I had used before, others are new but related to some of my previous posts about Edie, and others I added to tweak the previous stories for effect. All of the sounds I used can be found on www.freesound.org. I then added them all to Audacity, and moved them around into the order I wanted them and I repeated some of those sounds which I thought should continue for a longer period of time. For a few of them, I adjusted the speed or the pitch by clicking on Change Speed  or Change Pitch from the Effects menu.

This sound scape tells a story with sound. It is related to a bunch of my previous posts, but the object most obviously linking them is the chirping of a canary. It gets a little gross in the middle, just so you’re aware, anyways I hope you like it!

Made songs

The last assignment I chose to do was Sound Scapes worth 4 and a half stars. This was a lot of fun so I may of done more than asked haha. The assignment was to make a song only using found sounds. I had a lot of fun with this so here are my few songs that I made.

Sound Scape: Amusement Park!

I have always loved amusements parks like Disneyland or King’s Dominion since I was little.  With this audio assignment, I really tried to capture the feeling of being fully immersed in the sounds and atmosphere that you would expect to find in one of these parks.  I incorporated various sounds from common theme park rides such as carousels and roller coasters, but also tried my best to include the ambient noise of voices and laughter.  The end result is a very idealistic soundscape of an amusement park.

I downloaded the sound effects used in this assignment from www.Freesound.org, and compiled them in Audacity.

How I made Sound Scape

I avoided using any pitch adjustments or time warps, keeping all of the sounds vanilla.  After editing the sound clips into a desirable order, I published my soundscape on Soundcloud.

This audio assignment was worth: 4.5 Stars

The Sounds of the Forest

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/sound-scapes-2/

Sounds are from freesound.org:

spoonbender – www.freesound.org/people/spoonbend…r/sounds/244942/

IFartInUrGeneralDirection – www.freesound.org/people/IFartInUr…on/sounds/74646/

cornodrig – www.freesound.org/people/cornodrig/sounds/76676/

This sound was made from various sound that I found on freesound.org. I also used the Audacity software to trim, and adjust the volume of the different sounds in each file. Finding them was not too difficult; it just took the search bar and a rough idea of what I specifically wanted to find.

I rather enjoyed making this one. I had originally intended to add more sounds, but I found these three really made my idea come to life. I got the idea to make a forest sound after sitting back and thinking of places where you hear unique sounds. The forest came up shortly; you really do hear a lot of different noises that all get associated with one thing. Rather than picking everything, I chose some sounds and put them together to create this.

After trimming the sounds, I adjusted the volume to make the river seem further off (it was really noisy at first) and increased the volume of the trees rustling. All in all, I think it came out pretty decently.

I’m still getting use to some of the options and layouts in Audacity, but so far it is proving to be a solid piece of software for sound editing.

Let me know what you think!

ITCC Sounds

I did the assignment called Sound Scapes, worth 4.5 stars. I used Audacity as my sound editor and FreeSound as my source for the sounds. I also used an app recommended by SoundCloud called AudioCopy in order to record the ITCC elevator on my iPhone and then directly upload it to SoundCloud. So what I did first was find sounds on FreeSound that I thought would represent the atmosphere of the ITCC. I figured people talking, mouse clicking, keyboard typing, walking up the main staircase, and the elevator sounds would accurately represent what goes on in the building. I also decided to add in the Mac startup sound since the ITCC has a lot of brand new Macs. Finding the right sounds on FreeSound can be challenging, and I know that for some of these sound, like the people talking and the keyboard typing, I had to listen to several clips, and sometimes even go to the second page :O in order to find what I was looking for. Seriously though, there’s a lot of variations in sounds especially when it comes to different materials being used in the sounds. Once I found all of my sounds, I imported them into Audacity.
Once they were in Audacity, I moved the various clips around and added the “Repeat” effect to my shorter clips to make them longer. I also added in the “Faded In” and “Faded Out” effects to some of the clips in order to ease in their presence. I also lowered the volume of several of my clips to make them seem like they are farther away. Lastly, I imported my own recording of the elevator ride, making it fade in as well as if you were approaching the elevator.

Here’s my finished product!

Sound Scapes

I choose Sound Scapes, which is just taking different sounds and combining them to create a piece of music. Sound Scapes was worth 4.5 stars. I could not get this one to automatically show up on the post so it has been linked. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Welcome to Havana!

So I chose the Sound Scapes audio assignment, which is worth 4 1/2 stars. This assignment was right up my alley because I love to produce music in my spare time. The idea for the track hit me instantly. I decided to create a latin vibe, and that’s when the title came to mind, “Welcome to Havana”. I came across a very cool, traditional Cuban song that I knew would fit perfect for the theme. My next move was to find some sound effects to throw in that would blend in well. Being that Havana is located in Cuba and is known for it’s beautiful beaches, I knew for sure I wanted to hear the water and waves crashing in the background. Next, I found a sample of beer bottles clinking together, which was a great addition because “Who wouldn’t enjoy some ice cold beverages in such a beautiful atmosphere”?! Finally, I thought it would be cool to add a sound effect of seagulls calling to each other in the background.

My program of choice to create music is called Logic. If you have a Mac, then you may have heard of it. It is a step up from Garageband. Once I loaded all my tracks, my next task was to get a good mix on each sound. It is important that each sound has it’s own place in the track and can be heard amongst the other sounds. Small fades were applied at the beginning and end of the main song and waves for a smooth listening pleasure. I wish I could have used my studio monitors (speakers) when working on the mix, but I did not have the time to get them from storage. In result, I thought the mix came out decent, even though I was using my macbook speakers.

Before I uploaded my track to Soundcloud, I wanted to find a image that would represent the track. After about 30 mins of searching, I decided on the image at the start of this post. All I added was the text and resized it. Soundcloud was giving me issues when trying to upload the image to my track. After numerous attempts, I became frustrated and let it be. The length of the track was not specified in the assignment, so I made it just under a minute. Enjoy!

Country Sounds

For my assignment, I picked to do a sound scape. I naturally thought of something that had to do with cows.. so the country came into my head. All these noises are the stereotypical country scene. All of the sounds came off of freesound.

Process:

This was much easier because it was the second go around with Audacity. I just imported all the sounds I downloaded from freesound, then moved them around to make a good scene. Some of them I turned down their volume so it was more of a background.
