In thinking about this assignment for my DS106 course and our analysis on The Wire characters I thought about the episodes we watched this week on episodes 10 & 11 which illustrated the rapid demise of corrupt Treasurer and dock worker Frank Sobotka.
Got Any I.D.?
I entitled this assignment from the DS106 assignment bank Got Any I.D. based on the Let’s See Some I.D. assignment worth 2 stars. I decided to use the following picture from Google-Frank Sobotka as well as a picture of an i.d. template and a “revoked,” text sign also found on Google.
DESIGN PROCESS:
First, the first initial thing that I choose to do was to open up Photoshop with the i.d. template I downloaded.
After I got this into Photoshop I began to use the eraser tool to erase the pre-printed input text. Next, I used the text box tool to enter text about Sobotka. Then I added a picture which I opened of him in a separate window and cropped his head and then copied and pasted it onto the i.d.
I then used the Lasso tool to crop out the revoked text which there after I also used the image rotation tool to position it accordingly (my attempts were to get an authentic awkward angle), thus resulting in revoked i.d. from Frank Sobotka former Union Treasurer.
I wanted it to feel authentic and the only way that I knew how to do this was to create a collage and layer of sorts to convey a story. We all know what happened to Frank throughout the two episodes we watched this week during episodes 10 & 11. We saw the rapid demise and fall of Sobotka and members of his family such as Ziggy. I thought that this was a significant turn of events which also implied some foreshadowing that certain characters would not be on the show anymore and a new set of characters would soon arrive. As always you never know what’s going down in The Wire…until it’s too late!
Create some form of ID for a fictional character that seems believable, knowing your character’s environment or circumstances.
Use an existing template such as a credit card or library card from a found source and modify it as needed in your favorite graphical editor.
