For today’s design assignment, I chose to create a VHS design for a movie released after 2005. The idea was to make it look like it was manufactured in the 80’s.
I’m still not sure I hit the 80s mark, but I don’t think it looks modern either. I chose the 2009 movie, Moon. I searched Creative Commons for a base image to work from and found the below image.
In Photoshop, I cropped out the included white border and added an additional background layer to give the image a warped texture. I thought of renting VHS way back when and how the plastic wrapping on older tapes got wrinkly and created weird creases/bulges across the covers. I also added this to the moon picture, as well as played with brightness, contrast, and posterizing the image.
For the title, I decided to use happy face images (also with added texture) in the o’s. I still don’t love the outcome, but I didn’t want to take them back out either. It felt silly enough to remind me of old VHS tapes and is relevant to the movie.
As some final touches, and inspired form the assignment instructions/Best Buy, I create some stickers to add to the case. I created some flat Drama and Sci-Fi genre stickers as well as a beat up “Be Kind, Please Rewind!” sticker in the bottom corner.
One thing I like about these different assignments, is getting more used to Photoshop. I felt quite a bit more comfortable during this assignment than those I worked on earlier in the semester.
