Introducing the New Reality Show “Going to the Myth”! (okay this one is somewhat serious)

When I began the Really Reality TV assignment, it was just one I picked at semi-random that I thought would get my creative juices flowing for today. So I clicked on the Reality TV Show name generator, and the first couple options were boring or just didn’t capture my imagination. But then I got Going to the Myth, and I thought, “hey, I like mythology, this could be fun!” Boy was I in for a surprise.

When you do a Google search for “going to the myth”, the fifth option is a Cracked article on alcohol myths, and the tenth is on myths about introverts. At first this struck me as a truly random combination of results and I had no idea what to do with it (and frankly, the juxtaposition of the two passages is a little odd). And then it occurred to me that although I’ve known a few people with substance abuse problems or all-out alcoholism who meet the stereotypes of the emotionally troubled or self-destructive alcoholic or a “party hard” fan who partied a little too hard, the majority have been people who use alcohol to overcome social anxiety. Heck, I’ve drunk a little too much before in situations in which I was nervous or felt like it would help me click with a group.

One thing that I have learned in life after college (and trust me, it took me a while to learn this) is that the people I have to get drunk to feel comfortable socializing with are not the people I want to be friends with. And I don’t enjoy “house parties” or bars – I can’t hear the conversations most of the time, and when I can, they usually aren’t interesting. I’d much rather hand out at a coffee shop, or invite a friend over for tea, and for meeting new people and making new friends there are lots of other ways to do it. You have to put in some effort, but in the end you end up finding friends who are a much better fit than those you find when drunk.

So that’s my PSA to all the people who drink to overcome social anxiety or awkwardness. A very different prologue than I had expected to write for a reality show called Going to the Myth. And now on to the show…

GoingtotheMyth

Show Description:
Considering that booze is one of the pillars of human civilization, it’s kind of shocking how little we know about it. For instance, we pointed out a while back that some popular misconceptions about alcohol persist despite being goddamned fatal.*

It can be terribly destructive for an Introvert to deny themselves in order to get along in an Extrovert-Dominant World. Like other minorities, Introverts can end up hating themselves and others because of the differences. If you think you are an Introvert, I recommend you research the topic and seek out other Introverts to compare notes. The burden is not entirely on Introverts to try and become “normal.” Extroverts need to recognize and respect us, and we also need to respect ourselves.**

Elevator Pitch:
How many people do you know who drink because it “loosens them up” and helps them “come out of their shell” or even turn into that mythical “life of the party”? In Going to the Myth, we follow one man’s struggle to overcome his shyness at parties and in the process enter into a battle with alcoholism that will change his life forever.

Tag Line: Do you really need to party hard? Can’t you just join a book club?

“Big Wedding” Coming soon to DS106TV (***)

This image was created for the “Really Reality TV” assignment where you generate 2 words and create them into a TV show. I decided when I was going to generate my pair of words, I would NOT change them no matter how silly. The first pair of words that appeared were “Big Wedding.” What’s funny about this title is that there IS going to be a movie coming out this year called “Big Wedding“. “You gotta be kidding me,” I thought. Since I’d promised not to change it no matter what, I decided to do my own rendition of the movie using the paragraphs I’d acquired from the Google searches.

DS106TV Presents Big Wedding

More than 3,500 couples from all around the world gathered in South Korea to tie the knot in a wedding ceremony organised by the Unification Church.

Anyway, add a superfluous Topher Grace and a soundtrack composed of every overplayed trailer musical cue save “Born To Be Wild,” and you’ve pretty much got the entire history of modern mainstream American comedy, all condensed into a scant two-and-a-half minutes. If only Zackham had included Steve Martin and Kate Hudson confusedly wandering through the wedding party, so sure they’re meant to be there, everyone could have officially stopped making movies.

FANTASY ZOMBIES!!

A friend and I are working on a high fantasy zombie apocalypse setting for play amongst our yet-to-be-formed group.  We were toying with the idea of your standard, garden variety zombie apocalypse taking place in a standard, garden variety high fantasy world.  One where Elves and Dwarves were in decline faced with the faster multiplying, less rigid Human society.  Then one day – a patient Zero and all hell breaks loose.  Now we find ourselves 100 years after.

“We all never thought this could happen, not in a million years.” The anchor returned with a grave face. “But it has. Zombies have taken over. No one is sure where it started but countries all over are experiencing similar events. The government is sending out troupes and had evacuated all major cities including New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Atlantic city, Orlando, Miami, New Orleans…” I zoned out as the list went on.

Coming in 2013 for all ages the documentary of what happened in the simmer of 2012 as Zombies had truly inhabited the earth, tune in and prepare to relive the chilling experiences that shall hunt us all for the rest of our lives, well those of us who made it.

Design Assignment 1: Real Reality TV Show

How do people in cyberspace picture one another? More specifically, how do individuals engaged in text-based computer-mediated communication (CMC), with its paucity of visual and auditory cues, form impressions of those with whom they interact? And how do expectations formed online compare with offline experiences? Researchers have begun to answer these questions, drawing primarily on theories of stereotyping. This paper uses prototype theory and related models to extend previous research and to account for discrepancies between online image and offline reality. It draws on interviews with individuals who first met others online and subsequently moved to face-to-face interaction; it also utilizes comparisons between text-based impressions formed online and photographs displayed on web pages.
Like a movie version of a book, the real version of an online person’s self cannot help but disappoint, simply because the codes and conventions of space and time are so constrictive of the power of imagination.

The assignment was to create a new reality tv show for the DS106 network.  You can see more details by clicking here.
To do this, we had to use a reality tv show generator, and this is what I got:
Cyberspace: Fraternity Room
We then had to find a description for this show by Googling the show name and taking the 1st paragraph of the 5th search result (as description paragraph 1) and the last paragraph of the 10th search result (for description paragraph 2).
This part was not to difficult, and it helped with the next part, which was to pick out photos to go with our show.  This part was a bit more challenging.  We needed 3 pictures:

1. The protagonist – This guy looked like a good candidate.

2. An action shot – I liked the way everyone was sort of pointing at something, and I wanted it to by my protagonist.  I like that some are laughing and the guy in the light blue shirt, in the center, looks sort of like he’s yelling.

3. The setting – A frat house.

He’s the story.  The guy playing old school atari (lets call him Billy) wants to join the frat, so he makes up a deceiving Facebook profile for rush week (I think that’s what they call it).  The frat is disappointed, shocked, and offended that Billy was trying to rush their frat.  All Billy wants is to be included.  But after a few drinks with Billy, the frat brothers find that he’s not that bad.  They go for some hikes together, they make some pancakes together, play some video games.  The action shot is actually depicting the frat (and sorority sisters) cheering Billy on, later in the season, when he is playing in a national video game conference.  It’s a Cinderella story.

Assignment worth 3 stars.

This Old Doctor: Really (not) Reality TV

Designment Assignment 342:  Really Reality TV – Follow this formula to create your own reality TV show for the ds106 Network.

This assignment sounded like a lot of fun and a good one to start the design week off with, so here we go!  Onward with design week!

The 100-year-old doctor still makes house calls.  He must, explains Dr. Fred Goldman.  That’s where the patients are.  “If they’re sick and can’t leave home,” he said, “I go to see them.”

Remember, it’s your body; choose wisely what you put into it. Also, find a good doctor to partner with who will cooperatively address your health care concerns. And, take responsibility for your personal wellness by being an awesome, proactive patient.

Don’t miss the premiere of “This Old Doctor” and follow the doctor on his house calls as he restores youth to his aging patients by feeding them what he calls his “magic fruit.”

You’ll have to read to the end of this post to find the inside scoop.  Muhahahahaha.

The Process:

I got the following name of the show from here.

Then I googled the name to get the fifth and tenth search items.  The fifth didn’t work out, so I decided to go with the 6th instead.  I used the first paragraph of the 6th search result and the last paragraph of the 10th result for the show description, then made up the tagline.

Images: I had the hardest time finding the images:  I searched for Creative Commons images in Flickr.  The links are attached to the images.

Found these with the phrase “this old doctor”:

Then I found this with the term “surgery”:

I played around with the “fx” in the layers window to add inner shadow and outer glow to the two images on the left side of the ad.

After that, an idea started brewing, and I searched the term “canned fruit”:

The idea:

An old surgeon who has performed hundreds of surgeries throughout his career has saved all the organs and body parts removed from his patients.  He discovers that these fermented organs are a miracle cure for aging.  And the rest is hist…I mean, a reality TV show. :)

Design Assignment 1: Really Reality TV

Did my first design assignment and decided to jump in feet first with the Really Reality TV assignment. So here’s my TV show:

Malibu: the Interventions

 the interventions

Description:
At Malibu Mornings, doctors apply a wide variety of therapeutic modalities to assist in uncovering the underlying trauma of each individual, especially if that trauma has to do with the stressful life of being a celebrity. Every modality is crucial in providing our treatment team with a three dimensional insight into each individual’s internal template: beliefs, behavior patterns, emotions, old messages, and core issues. These internal insights are brought back to our trauma therapist and to traditional group settings.

Intervention should be undertaken with the advice and counsel of a professional experienced with the intervention process.  Interventions are delicate matters and it is vitally important that they be done properly. If a, friend, co-worker, loved one or family member is refusing to get help, please call or email us now, before it’s too late. But for now, follow your favorite celebrity’s rehab process each week on DS106 TV!
———————————————————–
This process was quite entertaining.
Using the TV Show Name Generator, I got Malibu: The Interventions. The first thing I thought of was, of course, drug interventions. And if they have a show like Jersey Shore, then why wouldn’t they have a show about celebrity drug interventions and rehabs?
Then I started looking through the Flickr creative commons for photos, and got these three:
- Setting:

Apartment building on cliff

- Character:

Jess

- Action:

feather talking stick

Then I had to come up the show description. As per the instructions, I typed the show name into Google and selected the first paragraph from the 5th hit, which turned out to be from a website called Intervention 180. I cheated a little bit on  the second half of my show description – I took the second to last paragraph of the 10th hit instead of the last one, because I couldn’t figure out how to make the other one work. That 10th hit was Malibu Horizon.
Then I just changed around those two paragraphs a little bit to fit my story a little bit and BAM! Instant TV hit.

As for creating the show banner, I used GIMP, and I have FINALLY FINALLY mastered layers!!!! Yesssss. It is a good day. Anyway I just pasted the the pictures in, chose a black background, messed around with fonts and colors til I found a scheme I liked – I wanted to keep the overall image kind of bright (aside from the black background obviously).

So You Think You Can Knit?!

Nuff said.

Reality TV – The Horstylist

The Horstylist - Design Assignment #342Inspired by @andessurvivor’s work on Design Assignment #342.  I didn’t exactly follow the rules, and I’m sort of afraid I came up with a real fake reality show – that is, a fake reality show that’s actually real – but there you have it.

DS 106 Assignment “Really Reality TV”

Image

Concept: We find that the reality shows and documentaries are interesting because they are not totally made up.
Every single body on this earth must have a story to tell. Life is just like a reality show, everyone is an actor.                          No matter    he or she likes the

We Need More Reality Shows

Actually we don’t. We need more fake reality shows.

San Francisco: Flip This Mayor
There must be something in the water at Oakland’s City Hall which makes people stupid.

San Francisco’s unemployment rate stands at 7.6 percent, below the national average and the third-lowest unemployment rate in California, as city officials say the number of tech jobs in the city nears levels not seen since the first dot-com boom.

——————————————————-

Tune in for the drama in city hall, as city officials labor hard to prove their are “creating jobs”. Mayor Stan Usual was elected on a split opposition vote, and has no mandate. He is dealing with a water issue, but it is not stupidity, but lead. As the tech industry dries up, before the tumbleweeds are spotted blowing through SoMa, city council people have developed a new job sceme involving portable structures made from aluminum cans. Who will win this epic community battle for the hearts and minds of the city? Stay tuned….

Hence a new ds106 assignment, partly inspired by the formula of the Album cover assignment, Really Reality TV The tags for this assignment are DesignAssignments, DesignAssignments342

  1. Use the Reality TV Show name generator to get a title for the show.
  2. Do a Google search on the show title name.
  3. Use the first paragraph found on the 5th result of the search as the first part of the show description.
  4. Use the last paragraph found on the 10th result of the search as the second part of the show description.
  5. Find three creative commons licensed images to represent a protagonist on the show, the setting, and one example of action. Combine them into a three panel show banner. Be sure to credit the sources in your blog post
  6. On your blogpost, write in the elevator pitch for the show, and a tag line for it appearing on ds106 TV.
  7. Sit back and wait for Spielberg to contact you. He is into TV these days.

So for my show, I generated this name, “San Francisco: Flip This Mayor”:

My google search results (which who knows if ever are unique?)

Result five was a link to 1st sentence from 5th result “the tattler: Occupy Oakland…Mayor Quan flip-flops! Cops cry foul!” where the first paragraph was There must be something in the water at Oakland’s City Hall which makes people stupid. (that is definitely show material).

The 10th search result was Tech company move boosts SF mayor’s branding push, where the last paragraph was:

San Francisco’s unemployment rate stands at 7.6 percent, below the national average and the third-lowest unemployment rate in California, as city officials say the number of tech jobs in the city nears levels not seen since the first dot-com boom.

That leads me to search terms in compfight for “Oakland City Hall”, “Mayor”, and “Tech jobs”, giving me these three photos:

Ogawa

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom

Rockin' my Tevas at work.

I set up a blank photoshop document with a black background, and dragged and dropped the downloaded photos (500px size) right in there- you can move and resize them as smart objects, then added some text, and boom! Done.

The last bit was to write the pitch for the show.

Shiznit! Reality TV is done.
