this glorious bath

so i’m a big fan of john green’s podcast the anthropocene reviewed. its a brilliant podcast, i HIGHLY recommend giving it a listen. In one of the episodes, he quotes a friend of his (Amy Krouss Rosenthal) “Death may be knocking at my door, but i’m not getting out of this glorious bath to answer it.” That quote has stuck with me for since I listened to that episode, so when I saw this assignment, tasking us with making a minimalist poster of a quote we really like. So I chose that quote! and voila, la produit finale!

So. I realized upon starting my write-up, that the instructions specify minimalist. And I was going for minimalism, I really was, I just forgot approximately halfway through when I noticed that STICKERS existed and went a little bit cuckoo. I think its adorable and really cute, and I do like the presence of the stickers! I started adding them as little reminders of the glorious things present in this bath, fish and flowers and the color yellow and all the rest of the colors too and all of everything else that makes life here worthwhile. Its called creative license! However, since Canva is ridiculously user-friendly, here is the de-stickered poster!

I like it with the stickers more! But nonetheless, onto the process! Step one! Look through your notes app for your list of Good Quotes ™ and decide on the one that starts by talking about death. Then go to Canva and mess around with poster background until you come across this cute starry night one, then add a filter so that its a little more subdued (& minimalistic!). Then go to the noun project and search up bathtub and find a good one. From there is was just inserting the different pieces and formatting so that it looks all cute, the discovering and adding of an abundance of stickers. Then delete the stickers for the sake of ds106 :(. et voila! two lovely cute posters with a lovely little quote!

I chose this quote because it serves as a reminder to myself that even though things heavy suck sometimes, and even though it seems like everything bad is knocking down my door, there’s still a glorious bath full of lovely amazing things and people that make it all worth it and that outweigh the knocking. I like the sense of control it gives me; I am not going out of my way to get out of this glorious bath to help the bad come in. Inevitably some of it will make its way in; thats a part of being human bby, but that doesn’t mean i have to help it. Also I just really like saying i’m not getting out of this glorious bath, the syllables are Nice.

Write It.

I’m a fan of minimalism. But I’m also known to occasionally have way too much stuff. What causes this divergence from ideal to reality? The same problem I face when designing something minimalist. I’m enchanted by the concept of clean lines and abstract visuals, but is it too little? Do I use more than 2 colors? Should I have a background? How many fonts should I include? It can be just as time consuming, if not more so, to create a minimalist poster than creating one full of action and graphics. Just as each article of clothing becomes more valuable to you as pare down your wardrobe, so too does each element of the minimalist design. Every aspect of the deign must have being. Everything included in the frame must have purpose.

The inspiration behind my minimalist design was a quote from Brene Brown, “If you own this story, you get to write the ending.” It has become a de facto motto for me in my thirties, adorning the signature line of all my emails. Honestly, it’s pretty minimalist in itself – encompassing ideas about personal responsibly, forgiveness, perspective, being your own advocate, and taking action. I did strip it down further to just “Write it.”

For the imagery, I used myself as inspiration. Myself in connection with Brown’s words. I love to travel. Nowhere do I feel more myself or learn more about myself than in a strange land with surrounded by people who know nothing about me. It’s an invigorating sense of freedom. So, my story is filled with begins and ends. Each time I pack the suitcase or board the plane, I am writing my story.

This brings us to the suitcase, stamped with ‘write it’. I chose a script I felt had handwritten quality to express a personal quality, a human quality. I debated about the background for quite some time. A complimentary color? Blue for the sky? A plane in the background? Just white? I like the aesthetics of an all white background, but the poster felt ever so unbalanced that way. I found the quilted pattern and was drawn to it initially because it was white with just a hint of something more – but then I realized, it too was symbolic. The tracks from point a to point b crisscrossing across the landscape. Train, boat, plane, whatever the mode of transportation, these lines abstractly symbolized it.

And then it was done. I hope I did Brene Brown proud.

Making the World a Better Place, One Design at a Time

I chose the Minimalize Your Philosophy assignment, worth 2.5 stars, because I wanted to try my hand at designing something from scratch. I wanted to take into consideration Vignelli’s points as well. I focused mostly on choosing the right font and keeping the spacing of the design aesthetically pleasing. At first I wasn’t even sure what my philosophy is, so my first step was to figure that out. After some searching and reading articles on other people’s philosophies, I decided my philosophy would be “Make the world a better place.”

Pick your favorite quote OR make up your own phrase which describes a philosophy that you try to live by. Design a minimalist poster depicting the concept.

I was born on earth day, and every year when my birthday rolls around I try to focus more on the earth around me than myself. Of course I try to respect the earth every day, but on earth day there is so much attention brought onto the well-being of our planet, I want to respect that attention it deserves. I am also planning to major in environmental science. The funny thing is, I was never that interested in the sciences during high school. I had never considered environmental science as a major or a job, so I still don’t know what I want to do, other than to make the world a better place.

During my first year at UMW I took many different classes that interested me, including environmental science and digital studies. I think those two courses, and now this one, have culminated to give me all the insight I need to complete this assignment. I care about the earth, I have a good amount of knowledge on digital literacy, and through this class I have expanded on my design comprehension and visual literacy. So here I go, trying to save the earth, one design at a time.

This minimalist design represents what I stand for and reflects my personality. The blue flowing background is calm like I (usually) am, and the globe itself is something I feel connected to.

I wanted a simple image of a globe, so I went to The Noun Project, knowing that they had simple logos. I searched “earth” and picked out one I liked. Then click download and choose PNG and the creative commons option. You will then be prompted to make an account; just enter your email so that you can download items for free, just make sure to give the artists credit. This globe image is by Nikita Kozin.

Then I searched for a picture of rays of light, because I wanted to but the rays behind the earth in my design. The following design is by Goker Cebeci. If you want to pay for The Noun Project then you can download pictures in color ad under the royalty free option. I did not pay, so I downloaded this image the same as the previous one.

I then opened a blank Powerpoint slide and inserted the two images. I cropped the names out of the logos by going to format picture > crop and adjusting the borders so that it is just the logo.

I then dragged the rays into the center of the slide and inserted a circle by going to insert > shapes > oval and clicking and dragging until the circle was as big as I wanted the globe to be.

I then changed the color of the circle by clicking on the paint bucket and choosing white. Then click the pencil and choose no line so there is no outline.

Then move the globe on top of the white circle and fit it so that the edge of the globe lines up with the edge of the white circle.

Add text to the screen by going to insert > textbox and type in your philosophy. Then go through the fonts and choose one that fits. I chose Lucida Grande. Then choose a font size that fits, I chose 36 point font, and then centered the textbox.

Next, merge all the layers together. Highlight all the images (2 logos and white circle), right click and select grouping > group to merge all three layers into one. Then move the image until it is centered on the screen.

Lastly, change the background. Click on themes then choose the theme breeze.

Then save the Powerpoint and save as a JPEG or PNG file.

Whining about Wanderlust, Part II: Its My Philosophy!

For 2.5 stars, I decided to do the “Minimalize Your Philosophy” Design Assignment. As per usual, I utilized Drawings in Google Drive. But since this assignment was relatively easy, this time I took more screenshots than ever before. I almost considered turning them into a gif for the benefit of the internet.  Hopefully they will be helpful! I also used a tool I’ve never used before, called “recolor” on Google Drive.

I began with a quote from one of my favorite poets, none other than Sylvia Plath. Although her quote rings with determination and dreams of wanderlust, she was known for writing confessional poetry, a style defined by opening up discussion of darker private, personal matters such as depression, death, and trauma. Its highly-relatable for people who suffer from depression like myself. I paired the quote with a painting by Vincent van Gogh, another famous depressive. Like the quote, I thought the painting was actually quite pleasant and encouraging, with the lights that seem to hover just beyond reach of the choppy water, in spite of the backstory of van Gogh’s life. Its called “Starry Night Over the Rhone”, painted by van Gogh in 1888.

Starry_Night_Over_the_Rhone

I would like to think this fulfills the extra challenge to “include a unique element that makes it YOU.” Literally, in this case, I consider myself an ostensibly upbeat person in spite of events in my life.

I imported this image from the Wikipedia article about Vincent van Gogh by copying the URL address.

Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (2).jpg

I specifically chose this painting because of the nighttime setting, as well as the openness of the scene. To import the image, I went into a Google Drive document and opened up a drawing.

Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (3).jpg

It opens as a separate window. In the drawing window, simply click on the image icon (I hovered over it so the label “Image” would appear where you need to click).

Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (4).jpg

Clicking on image will open a window where you can paste any URL address as follows:Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (6)

Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (5).jpg

Hit “Select” (the blue button at the bottom) to exit the “Insert Image” window and return to the drawing window. Now you will have the image ready to edit in the drawing window. Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (7).jpg

I thought the image looked a little blurry in the size it originally appeared, so I shrunk it. To shrink it, first I clicked on the image to select it.

Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (8).jpg

Next, I clicked on the blue square on the corner and dragged it inward. Just like the way an image would be resized in Microsoft software and in general.

I started thinking about color, based on the readings provided to help with the Design Blitz (that’s finally done! But the post is taking me forever to write, so sadly I can’t link it yet). Its a fairly pleasant picture, as discussed before, and I did want to preserve that. But I also wanted to subdue the colors a little. At first I thought I would try making them less saturated, reducing the intensity of the color to soften the image in relation to the text that would be superimposed.

Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (9).jpg

In Image Options, as you can see above, I found the perfect solution. I recolored the entire image to be in monochrome, which preserves the beauty of the lights but simplifies the distracting colorfulness of the image. Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy.jpgDesign Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (2)Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (3).jpgDesign Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (4)Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (5)Design Assignment Minimize Your Philosophy (6).jpgI made a few final changes after looking back at this concerning the typeface, thanks to the excellent resources provided for understanding typography for our Design Blitz.

Don’t be Bitter, be Better

Having virtually no design experience, I thought this week’s DS106 Design Assignment would be challenging. To my surprise, I was able to find an assignment, come up with an idea, complete my design in one afternoon. I discovered, Minimalize Your Philosophy at random and it all sort-a fell into place from there. The instructions were to: Pick your favorite quote… Read more →

MAKE CREATIVE HANDS

FullSizeRender

I love creating shadows with using my hands to create different types of images. This was the only thing I can do since it was not that sunny and it was cloudy. But If I had clear wall at the moment I would have created a shadow of animal faces and other interesting things but there is always a next time!

MY FAMILY TREE

My fam tree

My family tree is big and interesting. I hated doing this assignment because it reminded me of sad moments of my mother’s siblings who died in the past few years. I think that having a family tree is important to remind us of our identities and culture as well. The only sad part is the death part. I’m interested to see how our family will grow up with my siblings marriages :)

WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE PRINCIPLES AND THE CREATIVITY?

What I think about the principles and the creativity?

Design is a way to communicate with the viewer eyes without the possibility of using words.Massimo Vignelli focused in his booklet on how young designers have the lack of typographic principles. I agree with him that creativity needs the support of knowledge and the designer’s ability to preform and apply the methods. In pragmatics the writer talked about how we should look at designs and I agree with him based in personal experience.

I have made many designs for my internship the was for Hats, Heels & Ties where I designed their art work for procures and adds for the big event supporting kids with autism. I will make the design thinking that it is perfect and understandable but having a second eye looking at the design always helps identifying issues and fixing them before they go out. Discipline and appropriateness are also very important principles of design, details and the theme make the ending product valuable.

Vignelli also mentioned the visual power as a design principle. Choosing the right format, colors and sizes make the design pop-out to the viewer eyes. These are important but they are not everything to maintain visual power. For example, the layout of the materials also makes a good design. Visual strength is important in design and should not be confused with visual impact.

Identity and diversity is also a design principle that Vignelli talked about in his booklet. Too much diversity could break the design, and a little of it could make the design poor. Same goes to identity creates perceptive redundancy as Vignelli referred to it and it is an important term in design. Just the right amount of both Identity and diversity is the way to make a perfect design.

I think some of these principles take practice more than just reading about them. By applying the right amount of principles into the design such as balance, proportion, contrast, size, responsibility, sequence, and unity, the design can be outstanding an eye-catching. In the end it is all about the practice that will make a designer apply all the rules needed to make his pease the one that will bring him/ her to light.

FILM DESIGN

Double Indemnity

Think about the built environment of Los Angeles in the 1940s, the 1990s for Lebowski, or, in the case of Blade Runner, 2019. How does space help frame the design and style of noir in these films? What design elements of noir are not specific to a particular time and place?

Based on the american film noir Double Indemnity, the built environment in the 1940s is very dark film in terms of the theme. The starting of the movie shows violent, dark theme, scary music, and noise as well. The guy with the hat and the long black jacket has wired personality and activities. The shadows in the movie represent noir and the way they images were delivered to viewers. The lightning techniques that were used make the image interesting but people might not notice them. For example showing only half of the actor’s face to represent the double personality. The way that the window shade in the actor’s face and wall. The wife was imaged as a dark, evil, fake, and unfaithful person by the way she smiles, dress, act, make up, accessories, and the wig she wears. The way the wife and walter meet and the way their faces are covered where he will be wearing a hat the whole time do the shadow of the hat covered his eyes. Walter walking on the dark and when he got to the car the reflection of his face in the mirror when his wife claimed to go check the car. The way they where sitting in the car and the dark lightning in her face. The way walter was walking on the train on the middle and he looked dark where the people seated to his left and right where light and their facial expressions are easy to view. All these are lightning techniques that were used to make it easy to reflect their characters and personality.

Moving to Design assignments I did 12 stars this week

CREATE YOUR OWN DS106 WALLPAPER!

Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 11.23.37 PM

One of the 4 stars design assignments I made was creating your own DS106 wallpaper. This is the background I have created to simples both DS106 and my noir character. My noir character is supposed to be that sassy dancer who is also good at what she does which made her live her only child at her mother’s house to go and dance at a casino in Las Vegas. Hope you like my design and the color themes.

MINIMALIZE YOUR PHILOSOPHY

“Pick your favorite quote OR make up your own phrase which describes a philosophy that you try to live by. It can be about love, friendship, family, education, culture, health, charity, etc. Design a minimalist poster depicting the concept. Extra challenge: Try to include a unique element that makes it YOU. Don’t forget to explain your thought process. :)”

Screen Shot 2015-02-14 at 6.39.55 AM

This assignment is 2 and a half and I chose to do this assignment because there is one role in life that I follow the most. “Fear your enemies but fear close ones more,” in this role “close ones” are friends, family, and loved ones. These people could hurt you more because yo least expect it from them. I have got hurt so many times from people who I least expected to hurt me. Sara my character is an independent woman who is good at what she does, does not care what people around her think of her as long as she is happy. I think I am trying to make Sara what I wanted to be from the beginning. I do not want her to make the same mistake I made by trusting people too much. In the coming up assignments you will figure out Sara’s story.

ONE STORY/ FOUR ICONS

“The assignment is to reduce a movie, story, or event into its basic elements, then take those visuals and reduce them further to simple icons, four of them. Write your blog post up but do not give away the answer, let people guess! The challenge is to find the icons that suggest the story, but do not make it so easy. For icons a great resource is The Noun Project.”

Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 11.13.34 PM

This assignment is 2 and a half stars. What inspired me to pick this story is that I was watching a movie earlier this week and this movie got me. Very emotional and it happens a lot I hope my classmates and the teachers can get what it is. Feel free to write a comment with the answer and I will write back!

WAIT, WHERE’D THAT GUY COME FROM?

Photoshop someone(s) (or something(s)) into a picture that isn’t supposed to be there.

Screen Shot 2015-02-14 at 6.03.27 AM

This assignment is worth 3 stars and it is about attaching a random person or something in a picture. What made me want to go for this assignment and pick a person instead of a thing is the fact that this happens a lot where I will be taking a group picture of my family and I or my friends and I ,and someone will just pop-up in the picture like I do not care. Sometimes they smile too, Which makes it even a lot weird. I learned it the hard way to look first and then take a picture. Here is my picture with the random person in it. Let me know if you can find the person!

DESIGNBLITZ

Unity

#designblitz

For starters, I took this picture this Friday at the gift shop in the Fine Arts Museum down in Richmond. We used to have some of those at our house and my grandma used to always point at them and say “They look the same but they have different sizes but together they are equal and unique. You cannot separate them if one goes missing the whole set will ruined.” I have lost of the 7 pieces we had at home and every time I look at then I know one is missing because each one has a different size. This is what made me pick this object to represent unity.

Balance

#designblitz

This peace is also at the Fine Arts Museum in Richmond. This one represents balance. The way the rabbit is held from the middle shows how to balance an object. I thought this was a unite peace at the museum. The golden rabbit arms and legs and the way they balance each other. All these details show balance in the design.

Color

#designblitz

These are some paintings I have purchased recently to decorate my bedroom They colors actually represent each season. Starting from the left brown represents fall season, red represents summer, green represents spring, and the blue represents winter. I decided to put them this way because brown represent the problems I go through in life, red represents the same issues going bigger, green represents the solutions, and blue represents the new thoughts I develop in life. It is a way to cheer me up no matter what I go through in life. I guess the colors here have to go together otherwise something will seem missing, either to much dark colors or to much bright colors. The right balance of the colors makes these paintings standout. This is what I chose to represent colors.

Rhythm

#designblitz

This add was hanged around campus about an event coming soon. The way they used the paint and brush in the middle of a bottle is unique. I don’t see it that much. I’it a little hard to guess what they were going for from the first glance at it. After a while of looking at it I noticed they where going for how art makes simple things amazing and standout. The reason what I picked this one for rhythm is because of the lines the are going around the can. This design made the can and the words pop-out and catch the viewers attention not only because of the can’s size and the fact that it is in the middle of the paper but the rhythm going around it made it unique and simple.

COPYRIGHT & CREATIVE COMMONS

My own impression of copyright low, fair use doctrine and the creative commons movement?

Copyright is very important for the owner but not as much for receivers. Sharing my work with other to share knowledge doesn’t mean they can use my work without referring it to me. I have had a bad experience with some social media app when I had posted pictures I have taken myself to find it on another account where the person have used it referring the pictures to himself instead of tagging me. After what happened I stopped posting pictures for a while till I found an app where you can sign your picture of video with your name. Copy rights are very important and not everyone these days go by it. No matter how much they inform on it. People don’t like to pay to listen to music or watch movies. They like to download things for free. Use other people work without referencing them. I think their no single way in how to stop this issue from continuing. People need to realize themselves that what they are doing is wrong and unethical. I’m defiantly with copyrights being enforced.

Isabelle’s Quote to Live By

Screen Shot 2015-02-14 at 9.42.54 PMAnother assignment I chose to do was Minimalize Your Philosophy poster for 2.5 stars. I chose to use the quote that I also used on my book cover because it’s a great quote to live by for Isabelle Franklin. It was one of the original quotes I mentioned when beginning to outline who Isabelle Franklin is. The quote is by Marie Curie, one of the most incredible female researchers. Her work means a lot to Isabelle just as this quote does. I had a really hard time coming up with what I wanted to do with in the poster to simply convey the quote. Suddenly it clicked. I wanted to use a person’s silhouette with a thought bubble above the person that contained the quote. When searching through silhouette’s I decided it was important to pay tribute to both my character, Isabelle Franklin, and Marie Curie. I found a quote bubble that fit well with the silhouette I selected and then I put in the quote. I debated between putting the font in white or making it a color to make it pop. I tried both out and decided I liked the white better. I then went through the painful process of selecting a font I actually like. The one I finally chose was in italics and I chose to bold the word “ideas” in order to place more emphasis on the word as it’s the most important thought in the quote.

minmalize your philosophy + (kind of) movie poster?

though my soul may set in darkness,

it will rise in perfect light.

i have loved the stars too fondly

to be fearful of the night.

“the old astronomer to his pupil” by sarah williams

I originally found this poem attached to a Star Trek blog that I was browsing back when J.J. Abrams’s Into Darkness was released. The passage was associated with Captain Kirk, another one of my favorite TV heroes, and I was struck by the piece’s simplicity and powerful, inspiring message. To embrace one’s fear–to investigate it, dwell in it–is to conquer it and discover a new world.

Since this creation is a part of a poem and inspired by a movie, I wasn’t sure under which assignment this should fall. I finally decided on Minimalize My Philosophy, because this quote moves and encourages me with its easy rhyme and precise imagery.

As with my minimalist poster, I worked on this graphic in Pixlr editor. The background is a black, blue, and radial gradient drawn diagonally through the center. I downloaded a galaxy brush set from Pixlr and then mixed and matched various galaxies and star clusters to create my desired, vast, outer space effect.

Then, I input the image into PowerPoint and added some white text–matching the stars’ color–that echoed the elegance of the poem (the font is Engravers MT Regular). For the final touch, I added a soft, nearly transparent glow around the words to enhance the dreamy effect.

I have this poem saved on my phone when I need a pick-me-up; I hope it provides some happiness for you, too, on those days when you could use some rising galaxies and an endless expanse of gleaming stars.

Minimalism, two for the price of one

So for my final assignment, I went with the “Minimalize your Philosophy” design assignment. I actually did two of them. The first one I made and then I realized that it wasn’t something that pertained to the final episode that I have left to do an assignment for, so I’ll do that one after this one.

My real one:

This one was pretty easy. When I saw the example minimalist philosophy I thought to myself, “Hey, that looks like a PowerPoint slide.” So what did I do? I made Stringer’s minimalist philosophy out of a PowerPoint slide. And here it is:

Stringers slogan

So it wasn’t as easy as I thought it was. I created it in PowerPoint but then when I tried to save it as a picture, it saved as a .png which meant there was no background–I found that out after reading Carmella’s post. So, I had to screen shot it when PowerPoint was open, paste it into Word, and save it as a picture. Then I opened it up with Microsoft Office Picture editor and cropped it there and saved it. That allowed me to post it here.

So there is Stringer’s, but if you have stuck with me this far you deserve a reward. So here is your reward, McNulty’s Minimalist Philosophy.

beer glass with words

It says “Forget it, get drunk” in Irish. I thought it was funny because McNulty is Irish (maybe). I made it with GIMP and the picture came from here. I opened it up as a layer and then added the words, which I got from Google translate. At first I tried to add them all as one but then I couldn’t figure out how to center them and it bothered me that they weren’t centered so I added them all as separate layers and then combined them. It isn’t minimalist in the usual sense but it is simply a glass of beer. That seems minimalist enough for me.

Like Fish in Water

MEDIA WATER

This Ted Nelson quote seemed like a fun one to try to visualize. I was inspired by this set of minimalist quote posters and found this DS106 assignment that fit the topic pretty well.

Making waves
I used white circles over a blue square to make the waves. Not mind shattering, but a quick easy way to do it that might get some people to think differently. This allows me to adjust them easily after the fact which a number of other ways to do this would not have allowed.

My friend the goldfish

I drew the goldfish in Keynote. I really, really need to break myself of that habit but I’ve grown to like the vector drawing in that program despite the many, many shortfalls it has on other levels.
