Design Assignment #1: Photers (photos as letters)

Image

For this design assignment I used two prompts from the DS106 Assignment Bank: Letters in Your Surroundings (with 3 star difficulty rating) and Pictures Into Words (with a 2-star difficulty rating).  Both prompts are similar, to use photos that look like letters to form words. I applied both tags to this post.

A few years ago, I participated in a photo challenge in which we had to take photos that formed all the letters of the alphabet.  When I decided to complete this design assignment, I already knew the word/phrase I wanted. I also wanted for the photos to be representative of that word/phrase. So, I could not use all the photos I had from the alphabet photo challenge.

To complete this design assignment, I went on a safari in my digital photo album to find the appropriate photos.  Below is the a little “story” of each photo:

What lies behind…no wait on the door!

I always found hidden letters inside everyday objects to be cool, so when I saw the design assignment, Letters in Your Surroundings, I was instantly intrigued. The assignment was worth 3 stars.  The image I chose to do was of my bedroom door, sense it was right in front of me when I found the assignment.  I took a picture of the door and realized that it had more than just one letter hidden inside of it, it just depended on how you looked at it.  At first I saw just the letter “i” but when I took a better look at the door, I noticed multiple letters hidden including: “A”, “t”, and “ii”.

The hidden letters inside the door

I uploaded the image onto flickr and added the tags: DesignAssignments420, DesignAssignments, ds106, A, t, and ii.

Letters in your Surroundings…3 Stars

I cheated a little on this assignment, not going to lie. I did this awhile back… a couple years actually. I made one for myself and my best friend Ryan for christmas. We have them hanging in our rooms, his in North Carolina, mine in Virginia, to remind us of each other.

Letters of Ashley

You’ve gotten a little glimpse of my room as well. It’s pretty spiffy.

Rob Is Hard To Spell

At least when it comes to finding the letters in your surroundings! I couldn’t find many places that had R-O-B-E-R-T hidden in the area, so I just went around and cropped letters off of different signs.

I was going to post all of the pictures that I used so you could see what I worked with, but then I realized, we’ve made photo sets on flickr…why don’t I embed one and it won’t take up so much space?

BAM! Pictures.

Working with GIMP has been getting a little less frustrating…not because it no longer sucks, I’m just learning to cope/accommodate for it’s suckiness…Nonetheless, I’m not letting it get the best of me and I’m continuing to pump out design work! From those pictures, I put them together and spelled my name:

I didn’t want to have a lame white background, so I took another one of my photos with a good backdrop and ATTEMPTED to angle it against the wall…well that didn’t exactly work because I couldn’t get it right and then every time I tried my computer would freeze up because the file size was so large. It probably could’ve been blended into the photo a little better, but I think me and the GIMP had enough of each other for one night. One thing I’m realizing is…I want photoshop. I want a new computer. I want a nice camera. Christmas is right around the corner, anyone interested in helping out a broke college student? ;)

Bridges

I did the letters in your surrounding assignment this week

“Create your name from objects in your environment. Use either Creative Commons images, ones of your own, or a combination of both to find the letters of your name hidden in your surroundings. ”

For this assignment I decided to give myself a theme: Bridges. I really enjoy traveling and I think this photo portrays that, I’ve actually seen at least on of these bridges, maybe more.

I used photos of bridges I found through a search on the creative commons site, saved them to my computer, opened them in powerpoint and then took a screenshot of the photos lined up. This probably was not the best way to create the project but I don’t have any photo editing programs on my computer (yet) so it was the first thing I thought to do.

ds106 – Letters in your surroundings

So Today I decided to try out a design assignment called “Letters in your Surroundings”  the point of this assignment was to create my name out of objects in my environment by using creative commons images or my own.

for this assignment I decided to go out a few times and take pictures of things that looked letter-ish, this assignment can actually be quite challenging if you choose to do this, since some letters are harder to find in things (specially the letters R and N)  it actually took me about three days until I could find everything to put my name together.

so here are the photos I took during the past few days.

Then I took all these pictures and put them in Paint tool SAI and I ended up with this~

At first I thought this would be an easy assignment but it turned out to be pretty challenging since I had to keep an eye out everywhere I went hoping I could find letters in objects.
