Christiana’s declassified ds106 survival guide (How to use audacity)

This week, I completed one of the mashup assignments that tasked me with merging two audios of the same song, one live and one recorded, and to highlight the differences between the two.

You can check out my completed project embedded below!

This assignment is relatively easy to complete so long as you know how to use audacity. It took me awhile to get to learn how to use audacity so I thought I would take this chance to make a tutorial for how to complete this assignment as well as how to use audacity!

The first step it to download whatever YouTube clip you want into an mp3 file. You have to download your audio to an mp3 file first before you can upload it to Audacity. I recommend also making sure you are aware of what type of YouTube video you are converting! Often times, if it is from a legit source, it can be subject to copyright which can affect the upload of you audio! For my video, U converted Kesha’s recording version of her song “praying” as well as her performance of the song at the Grammy’s!
The first step is to import your converted youtube mp3 files! TO do so, simply go to files, import, and then finally audio!
Next, find the audio file you are looking for! If you wish to import more than one audio file, you will need to do this step more than once for each individual file you wish to use! For example, I sued tow audio files, but had to do this step multiple times as I changed in between the song multiple times! Every time I would cut the audio and merge it, I would reimport the original audio file and do the same process until I had about 3 imports of the recorded and live version on my audacity!
Audacity has a lot of great tools, but the two that are most useful for trimming and merging audio are the ones that I used highlighted above! The tool circled in red allows you to drag an audio file lateral. This is useful for merging audio files that don’t appear on the same line. simply hover your mouse over the audio file you wish to move, click and hold down your mouse, and move the file laterally to where you want it! The other tool is the trimming tool which is highlighted in blue. this allows you to highlight a portion of an audio clip and cut it down. Both of these tools are demonstrated below!
This is a picture of the tool that allows you to move the audio files laterally. Notice how the tool is highlighted on audacity! This shows that you are currently in the mode of that tool. To switch modes, just click on another tool.
This demonstrates the cut tool. The first thing you need to do if you want to cut a piece of audio is to highlight the section you want cut. Notice in the tool section, that the tool icon with the image of a cursor is highlighted. This tool allows you to highlight a section that you want. Once you have it highlighted, press the trimming icon with the image of scissors and it trims the audio!
Once the file is cut, you can then use the merge tool to move the audios so that they merge as one! Once my first cut was done and I merged it with the second audio file, I re-completed all of these steps about 4 times, re imported each individual audio file and cutting and merging them until I had one audio that went back and fourth between the recorded and live version about 4 times.
Once you are satisfied with your audio, your last step is to export it! Exporting is like Audacity’s equivalent of saving. One of two ways. First, you can upload it to sound cloud and embed the link into your blog. Another way is to upload it directly to your blog as an audio embed!

Like I said, this assignemnt is not hard as long as you know how to use audacity. Audacity was soemthing first introduced to me at the start of this course and it took a lot of trial and error to figure out how all that audacity can do. But I have used Audcity a lot over the course of this class, and it has helped me make some pretty cool projects! My best adivce to anyone is to not lwt audacity overwhelm you. It is really an aweosme tool so just keep working through the trail and error and playing around with it until you feel comfortable!

Dear McDonalds
 Get it Together

One of this week’s mashup assignments tasked me to take a dramatic closeup of anyone’s face and superimpose an unrelated landscape or scene over the face.

I’m going to be honest with you all…when I first read this assignment description, I immediately decided I wasn’t going to do it. Photoshop and photo editing is probably one of the things that I feel most uncomfortable about. And since this assignment was photoshop heavy, I decided against trying it.

However, I couldn’t help but look at past class examples which were so entertaining and funny, I really wanted to make my own. So, instead of giving into my lack of confidence, I decided to go for it and try this assignment!

The first part of this assignment was to come up with the two images to use. I have been super stressed out lately, and to cheer me up my mom has been sending me the Kim Kardashian crying meltdown memes. I decided that because I have seen so much of her meme face that I wanted to use it for part of this assignment. But I still needed to come up with a second image…

As I was driving back to m y house from class, I saw the inspiration for my ‘landscape’ photo in the shape of two golden arches.

And now, a quick story:

We have all been there…

You are doing homeowrk or watching a movie late at night and suddenly a craving hits you. You want ice cream. But not just any ice cream… you want the creamiest soft serve ice cream with swirls of oreo or m&ms mixed in. And you want it for a price that wont bust your budget.

So what do you do? You head to McDonalds to get a McFlurry!

Only one small issue….THE MCFLURRY MACHINES ARE ALWAYS BROKEN!!!

A broken McFlurry machine is an appropriate landscape for a Kim K meltdown in my opinion, so I decided that these two images would be perfect for this assignment!

And here it is…

While I was very nervous to complete this assignment, it was actually a lot easier than I expected. I think the main concern I had for this task was that I didn’t have access to a photo editing software I felt comfortable using. When I have to edit photos, I usually use Adobe Photoshop. However, my laptop for some reason has decided it no longer likes Photoshop and wont open it (unrelated but if anyone is a photoshop/HP wizard hit me up I could use some help…).

Luckily, some former classmates who had completed this assignment previously had some great ideas of places where I can edit photos!

That’s how I discovered Pixlr.com!

If anyone has trouble editing photos, I HIGHLY recommend Pixlr. Pixlr is a free website where you can easily upload and edit multiple images at a time. Using Pixlr, I uploaded the three images I needed (Kim K crying, a McFlurry machine, and an out of order sign) and begun editing them. Using the layers function, I overlapped the Kim K crying and out of order images and cut them using a lasso tool. Once they were cut out, I was able to move them on the original photo so that it looked like one photo!

I am really happy I decided to do this assignment. It was a lot of fun and honestly opened my eyes to a new photo editing site that is really easy to use, which I can see being helpful to have in the future.

Switching while ‘Praying’

Have you ever noticed how different live music sounds compared to the album version?

Most people assume that recorded version of music sounds ‘better’ due to the ability of editing. However I ma someone who firmly believes that live music will always be better than recorded, and one of this week’s assignments gave me the chance to prove it!

One of this week’s 3 1/2 star mashup assignments tasked me with finding a live version of a song by the original artist and then mixing it together with the recorded version of the same song in attempts to highlight the sections that sound the most different in the live version.

The song that I decided to use to complete this assignment was actually a song I used for another assignment that tasked me to create a graphic based on powerful song lyrics. “Praying” by Kesha is one of the most soulful songs I have ever heard in my entire life and Kesha is an amazing singer. The lyrics of this song are so powerful and emotional that I felt it would be the perfect song to switch back and fourth between the live and recorded version to see how the emotion hat the song carries changes based on whether or not it was recorded or sung live… and to also prove to everyone how live music is always better than recorded.

The first step to completing this assignment was to download the live and recorded version of the song from YouTube to an mp3 file. Once the two songs were downloaded, I then imported them to Audacity where I was able to trim and combine the audio to flow into one song. Its been a couple of weeks since I have used audacity so this assignment was a great refresher for me!

Once I was content with all the switches, I exported the audio file and embedded it below!

The live version of the song in my ‘switch’ is from Kesha’s performance at the Grammy’s. this performance gained a lot of attention as Kesha invited powerhouse female singers to stand on stage and sing the song with her. ‘Praying’ is all about Kesha’s experiences with sexual assault and abuse, and the fact that she invited a group of females up on stage to sing with her I think was beautiful and really helped carry the emotion in this song.

I think that the main noticeable difference is the raw emotion that comes across in the live and recorded version. Listening to the two versions, I think its pretty clear that Kesha sounds ‘better’ in the recorded version because of all the editing. However, I think that the raw emotion is so much stronger in the live version, which brings me back to proving to you all why live music is better than recorded music. Live music may not necessarily sound better, but the ability to listen and experience live versions of music carries such a different and in my opinion evokes a much stronger emotional response to the song you are hearing. I think that is evident in the switches between the live and recorded version of this song.

Music, like most people, is a love of mine. I am always looking for songs that make me feel things and have the most amazing lyrics possible. Whether you listen to it live or the recorded version, there is no denying the powerful impact a song like ‘Praying” has on the audience. And while I still assert that live music is always better than the recorded version, I enjoyed the chance this assignment gave me to experiment with my love of music and mashup two versions of the same song to see how music can change based on how one hears it.

A ‘Wicked’ Mashup

One thing that most people don’t know about me is that I am absolutely OBSESSED with Broadway and musicals in general.

To date, I have seen about 15 Broadway shows and definitely have performed concerts in the shower singing along to some of my favorite songs from musicals.

So, when I saw that one of this week’s 3-star mashup assignments consisted of remixing one of your favorite songs from a Broadway musical to show the different covers that have been created over the years, I knew not only that I wanted to complete this assignment but what song and musical I wanted to use for it…

Since 1997, Wicked has been one of the most ‘popular’ and successful Broadway shows to date. While the stroyline of Wicked is Wickedly entertaining, probably the main reason that Wicked is so popular is it’s music, and arguably the best song that came from Wicked is “Defying Gravity.”

“Defying Gravity” is a wildly popular song, even if you aren’t familiar with Broadway and the musical Wicked. It’s difficult melody has been covered by hundreds of thousands of people attempting to be Elphaba.

So for this week’s assignment, I decided to create a remix of “Defying Gravity” used clips from multiple covers of this popular song!

The firt step to making my mashup was to download all the clips to mp4 files. I decided to do mp4 files instead of mp3 files because I wanted to include videos with the audio since the performance is a big aspect of a broadway show! Once I found the various clips I wanted to use and downloded them, I uploded the clips to my HP photo and video ediotr where I was able to trim the videos so they would connect and flow into one another. I have gotten very comfortable using my HP editor app which made this assignment pretty simple to do!

Here is my video!

I had a lot of fun creating this video and this remix! I made a Disney Mashup early in the semester and remember being super stressed out making that and having a lot of difficulty. It was great to get the chance to make anotehr sort of mashup! Making this mashup was a lot easier than the first time around, which I think reflects how much I have learned over the course of the semester! I also got to use actual video versus just audio as I did in my Disney Mashup so it was cool to get the chance to sort of complete a similiar assignemnt but update my learning skills!

(Don’t) Call me Picasso

This entire semester has taught me a lot and taught me a lot about the strengths and weaknesses I have as a communications and digital studies major….and one thing I have learned is that while I have many strengths, art is not one of them.

One of this week’s web assignments tasked me to create images using google draw while an online software attempts to guess what I am drawing.

I have seen a lot of my classmates complete this assignment, and thought it looked like a lot of fun so I wanted to try my own hands at being an artist!
Well turns out I have zero art talent. The picture you see below is actually my 9th attempt at google draw. The first 8 times….I didn’t have google answer a single picture I drew.

Google art was easy to navigate and a lot of fun…I just apparently cannot draw! However, I still had a lot of fun completing this assignment. This course has been all about pushing me out of my comfort zone, and a simple assignment like this definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone as well! I do not draw at all; even when my friends suggest we play Pictionary I opt to sit out because I am so embarrassed about my drawing skills. However, this assignment presented a fun way to push me out of my comfort zone and to try a new program to create art.

This week is all about the web. This software revealed to me a lot about aspects of web design. I think it was really interesting how a website like this is able to guess what you are drawing sometimes before you are even done drawing it. It makes me really curious as to how this website was coded or developed, and if there is some secret magic that goes into its ability to guess drawings like a human being! I also really enjoyed the visual web design of the site. The site it a bright yellow and when you draw, it appears as if you are actually drawing with a pencil. It reminds me a lot of a kindergarten or elementary school art class which contributed to the overall tone I think the site was trying to convey. All of these aspects combine to really add to my understanding of what goes into websites, particularly designing and making them!

My Family Google Map

Everyone has a story of where you came from. Our ancestry has become a topic of recent popularity as of late, with people paying money to send their DNA to a company that will then track down their ancestry for them.

When I think of my ancestry, I think of one thing: Italian. My mom was first generation Italian. My Grandparents left their friends and family behind and immigrated to the country before my mom was born. My mom’s family tree stems back generations and generations to Italy, so I knew that I had strong ancestral ties to Italy. However, my family knows little about my dad’s side. So for Christmas two years ago, my sisters and I paid to have my dad send his DNA to Ancestry.com so we could finally figure out the other part of our ancestry.

My father’s ancestry came back to reveal that we were mostly Croatian. With a last name like Meyers, my family was all shocked to learn that we were mostly Croatian on my dad’s background as we thought we were German. But it turns out that during and following World War II, my dad’s side left Germany and immigrated to Croatia to Split and the Island of Broc.

Based on my family’s ancestry results, my family planned a summer trip abroad to visit each Croatia and Italy to learn more about our ancestry. This trip inspired me to complete one of this week’s web assignments in which we were to use Google Maps to tell a story of a trip!

So, using Google Maps, I got to tell the story of my family tree and the trip I took over this summer! Google Maps was really interesting to use because it also gave me the chance to add commentary to each location. I added to each location commentary how it related to my family trip and my family ancestry. It was really cool to see it come together on a map like this

This assignment was a lot of fun to complete. When we completed my ancestry.com, we got our results back with a map highlighting our ancestry, but it was interesting getting the chance to create a map based on my ancestry of where I actually traveled.

This was also my first time using Google Maps like this. Google Maps is very user friendly and has a lot of interesting features. For example, Google Maps was really interesting to use because it gave me the chance to add commentary to each location. I added to each location commentary how it related to my family trip and my family ancestry. It was really cool to see it come together on a map like this that combined my ancestry with my travels! It was also really cool because I could create my own map and edit it! I edited the locations on my map by changing the color to show my mom and dad’s ancestry! I didn’t realize all that Google Maps could do, and I could definitely see this being useful for some creative projects I complete in the future!

Guessing a ‘Grimm’ story with Gifs

They say a picture is worth a thousand words…so I wonder how many words a moving picture is worth?

I’ve had to create a story using nothing but audio for this class before, however one of this week’s assignments tasked us to tell story using nothing but GIFs.

This web assignment was titled “Guess that Story.” Using nothing but Gifs and a few clues, the task was to tweet at least 5 Gifs that perfectly depict a myth, folklore, or legend.

Think you know what Grimm Brother story I am telling using GIFs?

It’s Jack and the Bean Stalk!

Jack and the bean stalk was one of my favorite myths when I was a kid. I loved the adventurous side of Jack and one of my favorite childhood activities was climbing up trees, just like Jack (although he climbed a beanstalk). So when I saw this assignment, I immediately knew that I wanted to find Gifs that could describe this story!

The hardest part of this assignment was actually finding the GIFs to tell my story. I wanted to find GIFs that could provide great insight to my classmates about what story I was possibly telling, without being too obvious or giving too much away. However, I think I did a great job finding the perfect Gifs that told the story of Jack and the Beanstalk without being too obvious. And too help my classmates out, I included captions with each picture that contained one emphasized word that I think contributed to helping my classmates guess my story!

I had a lot of fun with this assignments. I use GIFs a lot when I text, and sometimes carry entire conversations with my friends using GIFs only, so it was really fun to have the chance to use my love of gifs for an assignment to tell a story using only GIFs!

You Can Call Her and Beep Her Again!

For my final audio assignment of the week, I decided to continue exploring music in female secret agent stories by completing the Old Vs. New assignment, in which we are to combine an old song with a newer cover of the same song and highlight the differences between the two.

Continuing with creating assignments that we can possible discuss on our radio shows, I decided to make the focus of my Old vs. New mashup Kim Possible!

Kim Possible is a secret agent classic for many, and she is one awesome female secret agent! News broke about a couple of months ago that they were creating a reboot of the Kim Possible series with live actors.

The Kim Possible theme song is just as classic as the actual show itself, so I thought it would be really interesting to go back and fourth between the old song and the new song to see any differences between the two and if the new Kim Possible is going to be just as strong and tough as the old Kim Possible.

Creating my old vs. new song required me to use Audacity. Audacity was first introduced to me about two weeks ago, and while I have never heard of or used the Software before this class, it is quickly becoming a favorite of mine! To start of I downloaded both the old and new Kim Possible theme song. My old vs. new mashup starts with a layered track of both the old and the new song singing the same words as the same time. The song then breaks apart to feature solely the new song, which then flows into solely the old song.

Hearing both the old and new song side by side, there are definitely some similarities and differences between the tow. For the most part, the lyrics used in both songs are the same. the main differences between the old and new song appear to be the change in overall pitch and tone, switching to a much higher tone than the original.

I am interested to see however what the change in the song between the old and the new hints at regarding the story of Kim Possible? Kim Possible is a great example of a female secret agent because she is someone that is always forefront in the action and has a male sidekick instead of being the sidekick as a female. I think music tells us a lot about what to expect from a story, and I am wondering if the some of the changes in the new song from the old song contribute to the classic view of Kim Possible or if maybe it diminishes it?

It’s questions like these that my group and I will look to explore and answer on our radio show, which I am excited to get started on!

The Song’s Bond
..Jane/James Bond

One of this week’s audio assignments tasked us to create a mashup of two songs and combine them to create one new song.

This assignment stuck out to me because the differences in music and audio between male and female secret agent films is one possible discussion topic my group and I thought about for our DS106 radio show called, “Girl Power.”

I thought it would be a really discussion starter for my group’s radio show to combine two secret agent theme songs, one from a female secret agent film and one from a male, and would be a really cool assignment to combine two songs and create a new song for my radio show, “Girl Power.”

the two songs I chose to combine were the James Bond theme song, and a Jane Bond themes song I found on the internet. Jane Bond is the female version of James Bond but sadly James Bond is more heard of than Jane. Since Jane and James bond are counterparts of sorts, I thought combining their theme songs to see what differences we can hear would be interesting.

To make my mashup, I first downloaded both the Jane and James Bond theme songs from youtube to MP3 files. One I had the audio files, I then imported them onto Audacity. Once both songs were on Audacity, I cut down and combined each song to make one new song!

Can you guess which song is the James Bond theme song and which is Jane Bond?

Well you can probably easily guess which is which because the James Bond theme song is much more recognizable, but in case you cant I will fill you in…Jane Bond is first and James Bond is second!

The most interesting part about combining these two songs is the difference that appear in the Jane Bond song versus the James Bond song. The Jane Bond theme song contains much higher pitches and tones, with a much smoother/fluid tempo. Listening to this song gives off the vibe of Jane Bond, an attractive, suave women. Meanwhile, the James Bond theme song contains much lower pitches and tones, with large changes in sounds that add to the drama of the tune. Listening to this song gives off the vibe of James Bond, a suave but strong and rugged man constantly caught in the middle of the action.

I think its really interesting how the musical audio choices used in theme songs even contribute to the possible idea that women secret agents tend to have a stronger emphasis on their looks rather than their capabilities, while the male secret agent theme songs have the drama that contributes to their “bad-ass”-ness.

Nancy Drew’s Girl Power

For one of this week’s audio assignments, I decided to create a radio commercial that can be played during my group’s radio show.

My commercial is a commercial for the new Nancy Drew movie that is coming out this March. I decided to do a commercial for Nancy Drew because our show is all about awesome female secret agents, and in my opinion Nancy Drew is one of the greatest female secret agents.

To make my commercial, I downloaded to movie trailer as an Mp3 file. Using Audacity, I uploaded the file and cut it down to make it shorter and flow as if it would sound if it was actually on the radio. Then, I recorded myself talking at the end to show what the commercial was for and to try to encourage people to go support this awesome movie that shows this awesome female secret agent!

This assignment was a lot of fun, because it allowed me the chance to continuously build on my Audacity skills. I also really enjoyed this assignment because it gave me the chance to create a radio commercial which I’ve never done before. This was tough because it required me to unleash my marketing aide, but I had a lot of fun!
