Greetings from DS106

Greetings from DS106

Assignment Details

Tell us where you are, where you’re from, or simply where you’d rather be and build a greeting card.

Personal Experience
I couldn’t quite figure out how to insert a text to an image on GIMP therefore I did this project on Microsoft Word (Woohoo)! I simply picked a photo that I took in Ethiopia and chose one that I felt represented Ethiopia in a ‘non-stereotypical’ manner but still reflected Africa. Through Word I changed the contrast and brightness of the picture. After I did that I inserted a text box and made the ‘fill’ transparent so the text would look like it blended in with the image. After I finished creating the postcard I clicked the PrintScreen button on my keyboard and pasted it in Windown Picture Manager. Following, I cropped the unecessary extras and saved the image as a JPEG. I am really happy with the way it turned out and if I was visiting Ethiopia I think I would purchase this postcard :)

Minimal movement gif

For this DS106 assignment it asked for as minimal movement as possible in a gif. So after a while of searching for a good scene to use my boyfriend linked me to a great scene in the show Suits. There is 2 layers here, the top layer is a still image from the scene where I cut out the eyes. Underneath I had the scene continue so that only his eyes are moving. This was fun, I have never made a gif like this before :)

Letters in your surroundings

I made this for my DS106 assignment B. I actually had a lot of fun with this one. The assignment said “Create your name from objects in your environment. Use either Creative Commons images, ones of your own, or a combination of both to find the letters of your name hidden in your surroundings. Edit the photos to work together and arrange them together as a single image. Have fun and enjoy searching for creative expressions of “your” letters!” So that’s what I did.

Without realizing it…I apparently chose a theme for my photos because they all ended up being elemnets in nature or some form of an element of nature. All of the photos were taken by me in areas that I have recently visited. The first photo is of this really cool tree in the park close to my house. it’s broken in just thge right way to be a K. =). Photo 2 was taken in Helen, Ga at Anna Ruby Falls. The sticks that had fallen made a perfect capitol A shape. The third picture was taken in Washington D.C. it was along a path walking to the Washington Monument. I thought it looked kinda like a Y. Ok, the L picture I struggled with. You wouldn’t think that L would be so hard to find. Anywho…while at Hobby Lobby the other say, i found these really cool calla alillies. So i thought that they would work well as my L. Finally the last A is…well I honestly don’t really know what it is, but I thought it was cool. I took this picture in Buckhead when we were on our way to Atlantic Station.

I like the way it turned out. I may actually frame this one.

Below is the link to the assignment. It’s worth checking out because some of the others are pretty amazing.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

Assignment Details

Take a picture of your subject (grandparents, pet, yourself) and put it into a totally different background in which they appear abnormally too small or too large. Think of Honey, we shrunk the kids…

Personal Experience

Once again, I am not very familiar with photo editing programs so this was my VERY first time doing something like this. If I were to be completely honest, I would have to admit that I had to Skype my friend in Japan to walk me through this process. I can admit that the ‘quality’ and “believe – ability” of this picture isn’t very good but it was my FIRST try. The more I use GIMP, the better I am getting at it but I definitely do have a long way to go. The hardest part about it so far is grasping the concept of layers. This is my version of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and my attempt of trying to shrink an object to look smaller than its actual surroundings.

The Way It Should’ve Been

So for our DS106 assignment 2, I went with a FanFic assignment entitled, “The Way It Should Have Been,” where we were supposed to take a scene from a movie or book that we like and change it. I actually chose a scene from a recent episode of Sons of Anarchy. I know that’s a TV show, but this scene has really effected me over the last few weeks. In the original scene (spoiler alert), my favorite character on the show, Opie is shockingly murdered in prison. I decided this scene was perfect to “enhance.” So without further adieu:

“No!” Opie declared as he head butted the guard, sealing his fate. With one act of defiance, Opie had nominated himself to go into the secluded cell to fight to the death against, God only knows how many gang bangers, hand selected by Pope for his revenge.

Opie was thrown into the cell all the while his three friends, Jax, Tigg and Chibbs looked on helpless, banging on the bullet proof glass that separated their friend from death, pleading with him.

“Keep it interesting, shithead!” ordered the guard.

The main guard tossed a lead pipe into the center of the room. This was Opie’s only hope, but once again, God only knew how many bloodthirsty thugs would be coming through the door on the opposite side of the room.

As his friends, his fellow club members, his brothers, looked on, “I got this,” was, once again, all Opie could mutter. Then a single spot light shown in the center of the room, shining down over Opie, and the door on the opposite wall opened and four large gangsters stalked through the door, surrounding Opie. Opie brushed his hair out of his face and clutched the pipe tightly, taking a swing at the thug number one, shattering his jaw.

A second tried to choke Opie from behind, but Opie flipped the banger over his shoulder and onto the first guy who was clutching at his face, blood pouring from his mouth. Like a bolt of lightning, Opie smashed the pipe over the second punk’s head, crushing his skull, rolling into the corner of the room where his friends could no longer see him through the window.

His back against the wall, Opie charged the two remaining guys hulking in the center of the room, back into Jax’s view, clotheslining one with pipe, shattering his larynx, leaving the guy hopeless on the floor, blood gurgling from his mouth. The man tried to release a scream, but there was just too much blood. He coughed and gagged and rolled away.

Three down and one to go, oddly enough, the biggest left for last. Opie dropped the pipe to the side of the cell and with his hands waved the guy over. This was personal, and so it would end, personally.

The two behemoths traded blow for blow, punch for punch. One of the gang banger’s teeth went flying and as cuts opened, the blood flowed from both men.  At the last second, Opie managed to hit a left hook above the banger’s left eye and the man staggered back. Opie used a right hook to the man’s gut to leave him breathless and as the man staggered once more, Opie quickly grabbed the pipe and, in an upward, diagonal thrust, across the face, ended the man’s life.

None of the members of SAMCRO looking on believed it would be possible.

Opie was left breathless, crouched in the middle of the cell, surveying the wreckage when the same door the thugs originally entered through, opened once more. This time, it was Pope and the head guard.

“You done pretty well for yourself, son,” said Pope. “I must admit, I’m quite impressed with you Sons of Anarchy. Perhaps we can work out a deal and end this misery between us.”

Just then the door that Opie was pushed through was opened and Jax and Opie were reunited face to face. Jax was as shocked as the guard and Pope.

“What’d you have in mind?” asked Jax.

The scene ends as Jax and Pope shake hands and Opie is reunited with his brothers.

Jareth – Magic Trading Card

For another DS106 assignment I chose to make a movie trading card. I wanted to remix not only the movie but an iconic trading card template from the famous card game, Magic the Gathering. Here it is, I hope everyone likes it! I had a lot of fun with this one.

I did everything you see here with Photoshop CS5.

Odyssey on Maps

I created a Google Map based on the Odyssey intended to use in future classes in school.  I would like to use this activity again for other books as well.  I am thinking along the lines of Mark Twain, or Jane Austen.  I am a visual person so something like this could be very useful in class and something fun for students to create themselves.

Voice Morphing to the Max on DS106

Hey guys, I did the voice morphing assignment on DS106 with myself and a video Ted talk that Bobby Mcferrin did. I was so inspired that I created a song out of it, which took me a few obsessive days. I hope you guys like it! Here’s the link to my soundcloud musician page: http://soundcloud.com/shinybaubles/pentatonic-expectations-with  Cheers!
