Mashup Assignment: This Doesn’t Belong Here

cAPTAIN hEADER

Mashup Assignment from the DS106 Assignment Bank:
This Doesn’t Belong Here…or…Who’s the Captain of This Here Ship?!

*I am currently working my way through my fourth semester of the Information and Learning Technologies master’s program at University of Colorado, Denver.  This is the fifth post within a series of Creative Assignments that I’ve been tasked with completing for a course titled Digital Storytelling.

The mashup assignment that I chose from the DS106 Assignment Bank is called This Doesn’t Belong Here.  It states, “For this assignment you need to mash up two different iconic movie scenes. However, you should aim to be as subtle as possible. Perhaps a famous prop that simply doesn’t belong or a character that looks a little out of place.”

So, who’s the captain of this here ship?  (I say it’s the tiger.)

Who's the Captain?

Digital Assignment: My Own Avatar

Digital Assignment from the DS106 Assignment Bank:
A Digital Reflection Of Myself…or…I Designed My Own Avatar!

*I am currently working my way through my fourth semester of the Information and Learning Technologies master’s program at University of Colorado, Denver.  This is the fourth post within a series of Creative Assignments that I’ve been tasked with completing for a course titled Digital Storytelling.

The digital assignment that I chose from the DS106 Assignment Bank is called A Digital Reflection of Myself.  It basically asked that we post a digital version of ourselves.

I created about a dozen or so avatars for coworkers at my last job and also made one for myself.  I used Photoshop to create them, purely because I know that software much better than I know Illustrator.  You can see more of my avatars HERE and see my own avatar shown below.  (Wanting an avatar for yourself??  Let me know and maybe we can work something out!)

Audio Assignment: A Song for My Daughter

Audio Assignment from the DS106 Assignment Bank:
Solo Vocal Trio…or…A Song for My Daughter

*I am currently working my way through my fourth semester of the Information and Learning Technologies master’s program at University of Colorado, Denver.  This is the third post within a series of Creative Assignments that I’ve been tasked with completing for a course titled Digital Storytelling.

The audio assignment that I chose from the DS106 Assignment Bank is called Solo Vocal Trio:  “First, find a song that you feel comfortable singing in your natural register.  Record yourself singing it three separate times, and layer those together using your choice of audio editing software.  Do not use any effects for this, so try to pick an acoustic song relying mainly on the vocals.”

Mommy and SavannahI chose a song for my two-year-old daughter, Savannah.  She’s too young to judge and realize how poor of a singer mommy is!  (Be warned…it’s bad!)

The original song is Happy Together, by the Turtles.

Visual Assignment from the DS106 Assignment Bank:
Spoil a Movie in 30 Seconds or Less…or…Jurassic World Spoiler in Exactly 43 Seconds

*I am currently working my way through my fourth semester of the Information and Learning Technologies master’s program at University of Colorado, Denver.  This is the second post within a series of Creative Assignments that I’ve been tasked with completing for a course titled Digital Storytelling.

The visual assignment that I chose from the DS106 Assignment Bank is called Spoil a Movie in 30 Seconds or Less:  “Create a compilation of the most important scenes or events from a movie. Essentially, combine the major plot points into a short video.”

I went a little further and added audio…and 13 extra seconds.

Visual Assignment: Selfie with Albert Einstein

Visual Assignment from the DS106 Assignment Bank:
The Forrest Gump Project…or…My Selfie with Albert Einstein

*I am currently working my way through my fourth semester of the Information and Learning Technologiesmaster’s program at University of Colorado, Denver.  This is the first post within a series of Creative Assignments that I’ve been tasked with completing for a course titled Digital Storytelling.

The visual assignment that I chose from the DS106 Assignment Bank is called the Forrest Gump Project:  “Good ole’ Forrest Gump.  He always manages to find himself at the center of history, and using photo editing software, so can you.  Find a historic photograph and place yourself into the scene, just like Forrest Gump.”

I’ve always thought that Albert Einstein must have been quite a character.  He’s definitely on my “People I’d Like to Have lunch With” list!  So here we are…taking a selfie together after we’ve just had lunch.  He cracked me up throughout the entire meal.

I Can’t Remember! A Conversation with Myself

When I was in elementary school, a girlfriend and I use to play this game where we’d have an on-going conversation about how we couldn’t understand why we never saw each other at piano lessons, even though they were always at the same time. It was silly and I’m not sure why it has stuck with me but, the memory… Read more →

Rear-View Montage: Travels of my Past

I am a lot of things. I’m a sister, a daughter, a grad student, a Social Media Strategist, yada yada ya– the list goes on. But, most importantly, I like to think of myself as a photographer and a traveler. Both bring me great joy and pleasure and I couldn’t imagine my life without my camera and some kind of… Read more →

August 2013 GIF Challenge #3: DS106 Promo Poster

Well, Friends.

The DS106 Community stepped up for the August 2013 Animated GIF Challenge #2 and got UNCLE @jimgroom animated in John Johnston’s Dancing Jim All Over the World assignment, with SEVEN new entries showing now as being syndicated through to the assignment page and at least two others seen in the wild and perhaps waiting in some queue to get indexed. (Be sure to tag your assignments with both the AnimatedGIFAssignments tag and the AnimatedGIFAssignmentsXXXX numbered tag so that it gets onto the assignment page.)

It was so fun to see Jim dancing here and there, and I just had to have another go at making him dance before I went to sleep. Both @dogtrax and @Rockylou22 had Jim dancing on top of the world, and I was inspired by their work to riff-a-GIF and show all the different Jims dancing on the world at the same time like a UNICEF logo.

In the end, my little enthusiasm pushed me through the sleepiness (and ds106rad.io is great middle-of-the-night company!) and I wound up with a DS106 Promotion Poster, and a new Animated GIF Assignment 1183: Tell the World About DS106 GIF

Since we are in the GIFfing weeks leading up to the next session (Fall 2013 #headless13, starting August 26th), it seems appropriate to have everyone make a DS106 Promo Poster GIF to get the word out to the great uninformed masses. Perhaps we can draw in some newcomers who need to see the DS106 light. There must still be a few out there. LOL.

NOTE: Click on the GIF to hear the music that all the Jim Grooms are dancing to. (Thanks, John!)

The MIDI version of “It’s a Small World” was found at Willie Wonkas Free MIDI Music Factory Downloads. The site is glorious in its application of old-style GIF animation and hand-built HTML, and is worth a click through for the sake of nostalgia.

Since this GIF also made use of yesterday’s Dancing Jim Groom theme, I also tagged it for the Animated GIF Assignment 1001. So it’s a two-fer.

Okay — get out and promote your favourite aspect of DS106 to the world with a special GIF!

Inspiration for this piece: Jim Groom’s new DS106Zone design assignment, “Create a READ poster.”

Tool: I used my favorite web-based, free photo editor Pixlr to create the three layers for the poster.

The screen shot in my READ poster is from “The Changing of the Guard,” one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes. If you’re an educator, and have not yet seen it, grab a gallon of Kleenex and dial it up. I’m a know sentimentalist and a lover (not a fighter), but I hope everyone might find some inspiration in the story of the suicidal aging Professor Fowler and the generations of students whose lives he touched.

Audio Submissions for the @scottlo The Driveby Show

In follow-up to the Scott Lo (@scottlo) request for .mp3 audio submissions (see “Audio Assignment 985: Scott Lo The Driveby Show Interactive Audio Contribution “ for his new #ds106radio The Driveby Show show (avlid RAS syndrome by not using acronyms!), here are some files that I’ve posted:

Apparently it’s the weekend (Thursday, Frida) in Saudi Arabia today and tomorrow, so Scott was not driving to work today. Keep your eye on the Twitter and #ds106radio for the next instalment of the @scottlo The Driveby Show show. As I understand it, we should get it hear at about 10:30 pm on Friday.
