100 ABBA’s

by Thomas Pulsifer

Based on the 4-star “Audio & Music Video Mashup” assignment from the assignment bank, I’ve created this incredibly cursed mashup of 100 gecs and ABBA. When choosing the song and music video, I knew I wanted to combine a cheery pop song with intense or bizarre visuals, but I also wanted them to match strangely well. ABBA immediately came to mind for the song, since they’re the pinnacle of pop music, so I chose my favorite ABBA song, “Take A Chance On Me.” The music video, on the other hand, was a bit harder to decide on. I ultimately ended up going with the video for “hand crushed by a mallet” by 100 gecs, which definitely fits the intense/bizarre criteria I was going for.

As you should come to expect by now, I used Vegas Pro to combine the audio and visuals. The editing process was much, much easier than the process of actually finding the right song and video, which ended up being so difficult because of how hard it was to find a good match. Thankfully, this pairing turned out great. There’s a lot of funny synchronizations between the song and the video, such as how the beat kicks in once the fly breaks into the room, or how the lyrics say “You want me to leave you there” when the fly leaves through the window. There’s also a nice descending musical motif to go along with the iris-out at the end of the video. The song recontextualizes the music video quite a bit, implying the fly has romantic feelings for green man. Overall, I’m very happy with how this turned out. ABBA and 100 gecs are both great in their own right, and combining them is equal parts ridiculous and hilarious.

Happy Sugar

For this assignment take a music video and mash it with a new song. Replace the audio to a music video with another song. Try to get them to fit together as best as you can.” 4 STARS

I chose to use these two songs for my mashup because I love how upbeat they both are. I believe that these songs truly have the ability to produce happiness. I also believe that happiness is what helps us continue to push forward day in and day out. Ross always says to be different and do what will make you happy. Working with this mad me happy, so I would say I successfully followed Ross’s advice. I decided to use the Sugar music video because I felt that it matched up to Happy better then if I would have used the Happy music video and played Sugar over top of it.

To complete this assignment I started off with thinking about what songs would be fun to work with. I quickly thought of these two songs due to their up beat tone. I then had to find a website that would allow me to download both videos from Youtube. After I found one and downloaded the two songs I opened QuickTime. I then uploaded Happy and exported it as just audio. I then uploaded the Sugar video with music and the Happy music with just audio to GarageBand. After that I split the audio from and the video apart from the Sugar video and deleted the audio. I then had to find a good place to start the music and the video. After lining the music and the video up the best that I could. I created a opening title slide and a credits slide at the end. I then picked out a transition for after the initial slide and one before the credits slide. After that I uploaded the video to YouTube.

I had a great time working with this assignment because I was able to work with two great songs. It really boosted my happiness working with these songs. My main take away from this assignment was the YouTube video downloader website that I found. If I could do this assignment again I would have probably added some transition effects during the rest of the video.

Spanish Music, English Video Remix

This music video was one of my favorites to create. The powerful song paired with the two videos I chose almost made me cry every time I watched it during production. This work is based on a remix of the “Audio and Music Video Mashup” using the remix card “In another language.” The general idea is to use an existing music video and place a different song with it. Let me break my process for you.

I decided to use a Spanish song for the language requirement of this remix. I chose the song “Regresa A Mi” by Il Divo. It was a bit difficult to find a video to fit with this song since the song is almost 5 minutes long. Eventually, I chose the music videos for “Before You Go” and “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi.

For the most part, I used the scenes from “Before You Go” and the singing scenes from “Someone You Loved.” I also tried to pair the music video as best as I could with the song. For example, at one point late in the song, there is a really strong chorus as the song reaches its climax. I chose to pair this with scenes of a funeral from “Before You Go.”

When I reached the end of the video, I was a few seconds short of the end of the song. I really wanted the song to end while looking at the woman from “Someone You Loved” looking back at the singer. I screenshot the image and pasted it into the video with a slow fade to black. Unfortunately, the proportions didn’t fully line up so you can tell that there is an image there instead of the video. However, the effect that I wanted was captured so I ignored this problem (especially since I couldn’t find a solution).

I really enjoyed working on this assignment. It is similar to some I have worked on in the past, but this time, I limited myself to only using the two videos instead of a long movie with lots of clips to choose from. Even though the videos were completely different, they somehow meshed well together when placed to this song.

“And you may look the other way”

I saw this GIF on Twitter and just had to do it. Sorry. This idea is entirely lifted from @Pandamoanimum. I used Twitter Video Downloader to grab the GIF and the YouTube Video and Audio Downloader in Firefox to get Travolta and the Bee Gees. I imported them both into iMovie. The GIF downloaded as an mp4 video, which made it easy to combine. I brought the music video in and played it to the point where the title came in and stopped it there, then inserted the cat video at that point. The video is short so I pulled it in a second time right a the end of the first one. On playback I noticed the the shape of the videos didn’t match, so I used the Crop to Fill function on the cat video.

I uploaded it to Vimeo. See how long it stays there. It might have been better to just use the music and the cat and pig video, and get to the point without the intro part. Or maybe I could have added some opening credit text to it. If I adjusted the speed of the video so that the stepping fit the beat it might have been a subtle improvement, but it probably also would have gone unnoticed. So you get what you got. “And now it’s alright, it’s okay…”

Going Bad with Body

For this assignment I decided to use the Going Bad music video with the Body by Loud Luxury song. I thought this was a cool idea because in the video there’s a lot of cars being used and in the song they talk about keys so I thought it matched up well.

However my biggest challenge was trying to get the music to go on with the song as it played and was very frustrating when it wouldn’t. I ended up just using the music video and song differently so play the song as the video plays.

YO THIS WAS AWESOME

I had a lot of fun with this one! It took me a while to figure out what video I wanted to use with the song. For the video, I used Get Some by Ghosted, and the song is Good Day by Yellow Claw. Both are great by themselves and now even better together!

For this assignment, I created a mash up using IMovie and downloading the song Good Day I used mp3juices.cc, and for the video, I downloaded it by qdownloader.net. I then uploaded the video to youtube.

Pills for the Mad Hatter

For my second mashup assignment, I did the “Audio & Music Video Mashup” assignment.

The first thing I did was check out some Melanie Martinez music videos, because her videos are always visually engaging. The “Mad Hatter” video is particularly dynamic, especially because the theme of insanity can work with a lot of songs.

I was reminded of St. Vincent’s new single, “Pills”, and I decided to try those two together. I was shocked at how well they worked together. The Alice in Wonderland allusion plays on a drug theme, obviously reflected in “Pills”, and is particularly appropriate in the Doctor’s Office scene in the video.

I’m really pleased with how this turned out.

Fall Out Boys & Bangtan Boys

I combined one of my favorite bands video called BTS of their song Not Today and I listened to a few songs on my iTunes with high energy and I thought Beat it by Fall Out Boy would work well with it. I was right I like the energy of it and if I had more time I would edit the video and the music a little more so that they went a little better with the dance scenes. I edited it a little and kept the original intro of the video because I thought it was a good start. Since the video was a lot longer than the music I edited it down to better fit it and I also took out a few parts from the song to better go with the scenes from the video I kept. I downloaded the video off of a website online and I had the song already on iTunes so I combined them on iMovie with a little bit of editing.

Feel It Around But With Skateboards

For this assignment, rated four stars, I placed the audio of the song “Feel It All Around” by Washed Out over a video by Juan Rayos, called “Carving the Mountain”.  I chose these two because I just really love them.  The video by Rayos is amazing and I remember watching it in 9th grade and just being in awe of these women longboarding.

I used Final Cut Pro to edit.

James Panther, or Pink Bond?

Below is a mashup of the James Bond and Pink Panther theme songs. I used the Youtbue doubler machine, which I had a lot of fun playing around with and will probably use more often. I wish I could clean it up a bit or add an ending time to each video, but the surface level of it works for what I was going for.
