Selena is that you?

For my second star assignment I choose Actor Transformation. This assignment was to pick an actor and put to together different clips from through out their career to show how much they have changed over the years.

I immediately knew that I wanted to do a child actor.  They seem to be the ones who have the most dramatic changes through out their career. I ended up googling Disney child actors to help me decide who I wanted to do.  I ended up choosing Selena Gomez.  For those of you they didn’t know Selena (and Demi Lovato) got started in acting from Barney.  Since her Barney days she has been on just about every Disney Channel show and is now starting to break off into movies.  She has also managed to work pretty consistently since she started so I wouldn’t have to worry about having too much dead time in her timeline.

To show this progression I used Mozilla Popcorn.  While I found some issues using popcorn the first time, I decided that I would try to use it again. (I think the fact that I use Firefox helped since Firefox and Popcorn are both made by Mozilla).  To start making this video I first went to Selena’s IMDB page and pulled out some significant shows or movies that she had done.  I then went to YouTube and started looking for good clips from each of the ones I picked.  It took me a bit of playing around to decide exactly which clips that I wanted to use for each.

After deciding which clips I wanted to use, I open Popcorn.  When you first start up popcorn it looks something like this:

opening page

To get started you simply clip Start a Project.  After beginning my project I went ahead and entered all of my clips into my file.  To do this you clip on the Media tab and then enter each YouTube link and then click create clip:

create clip

After you enter the clip it will appear in the media gallery section listed just below.  Here is a picture of what mine looked like after I had entered all of my videos:

media guide

I then entered in each clip one at at time.  I started off with the earliest clip I had of Selena.  I then edited the time of the clip.  This can be done by pulling on the arrow circled in the picture below.

clip 1

After getting the first clip entered how I wanted it, I added the rest of the clips in one at a time each in a separate layer doing the same thing.  Do not forget to line up each of the clips so that they are touching like in the example below (I accidentally put one in out of order which is which is why they do not go down in a even diagonal line).order

After getting all of my clips in and in the correct order I added in a popup to say what the show or movie was that she was in and what year it was released.  You can add in pop ups by clicking the events tab and then the popup tab. (If you have video paused exactly where you would like the pop up to appear you will not have to move it at all which was quite helpful).  You then add edit the pop up to say whatever you would like it to say.

Finally I added in a title.  I did this simply by adding in a picture (I just used a simple blue background that I got off of google).  To enter your picture you select events and then image.  After you have the image tag open you simply drag in the picture that you want.  I then added words on top of the picture for my title.  You can add words by going to events and then text.  Here is a picture of what my popcorn looked like with the title placed in:title

After adding your clips, popups, and title you are good to go.  Just press the save button at the top and you are done!

Here is my final video! Hope you like it:

Poor Leo – ????

Leonardo DiCaprio has been in over 20 hugely successful films, and yet he has no Oscar to show for it.

I figured the best way to show my love for his work and to do my assignments was to work on the Actor Transformation mashup.

He’s an amazing actor, and through this video, you can really see it. I mashed up  12 clips from his Oscar-worthy movies. You can see from his first huge success, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993), that Leo has incredible skills. The video shows the growth of him as both an actor and a person.

The movies and their respective clips:

1. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) — Clip

2. Romeo + Juliet (1996) — Clip

3. Titanic (1997) — Clip

4. The Beach (2000) — Clip

5. The Gangs of New York (2002) — Clip

6. Catch Me If You Can (2002) — Clip

7. The Aviator (2004) — Clip

8. Blood Diamond (2006) — Clip

9. Inception (2010) — Clip

10. J. Edgar (2011) – Clip

11. Django: Unchained (2012) — Clip

12. The Great Gatsby (2013) — Clip

I threw the last one in there because I just know he’ll be great in it.

How I did it

Wowza did I have a lot of problems with this assignment!

Thankfully, all of the YouTube clips were easily downloaded using PwnYouTube. It’s when I got to MPEG Streamclip that things went downhill.

I have been using MPEG Streamclip for awhile now, but for some reason, the program would not open any of my YouTube downloads.

This was incredibly frustrating so I went to Adobe Premiere to just trim them up in that program. Then that crashed on me every time I tried to open a file. Lacking time this week because of some upcoming presentations and finals, I just decided to use Windows Movie Maker.

It’s not as clean as I normally would like it because Movie Maker just doesn’t have the same options as Premiere. But I made do.

I also have a feeling that I’ll be flagged on YouTube for copyright issues on this one, but I plan to explore my feelings about this much more in my weekly summary.

Ordinary Girl

For my other mashup assignment, I chose to do Actor Transformation {****}. You always see actors/actresses on television and movies that you say “wow, they have really grown up”. When I was reading this assignment’s details, one actress came to my mind. Miley Cyrus.

I wanted my transformation video of Miley to have clips, pictures, and songs. I mean this is a mashup assignment! I got my video clips and pictures from when she was on Big Fish {2003}, Hannah Montana {2006}, The Last Song {2010}, and recent pictures of her {2012-13}. The song {Ordinary Girl} is from her show Hannah Montana. I thought the song fit just right :)

I got the clips from YouTube and converted it through KeepVid. Doing this made the clips easy to open in my Windows Movie Maker. I ordered the clips/pictures from young Miley to older Miley. You can clearly see how this young lady has changed – it’s kind of scary!

The reason I put a then and now picture was because I wanted the viewer to be able to look at her young and look at her now in order to compare the two. She looks a little scary now, what with bleach blond hair and all. I wanted to remind the viewer of the sweet, young, innocent Miley they saw at the beginning of this video. They might have forgotten because Miley looks so crazy psycho different.

The reason this is a mashup assignment is because I took the audio from a recent interview and played it when I was showing the pictures of her recently. This aspect changes what she is trying to say. She is saying that her parents were strict and that’s ok because she grew up fine but the pictures show otherwise. I thought that this mashup would add a bit of comedy to this video.

Blog post song title: Ordinary Girl – Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus - it doesn’t matter. It’s the same person.

Video Mashup assignment was fun to create. I chose to show Disney Channel star Salena Gomez transform from a cute little girl into a beautiful young adult. I took a clip of her from Barney, Disney channel show Wizards of Waverly place, and lastly a commercial. I first collected several videos from youtube, used keepvid.com to download the videos. I then used Adobe Premier Video editing software to cut out clips. After I had the desired clips, I exported the file and uploaded it on youtube.

Dakota Fanning Transformed

So I decided to do the Actor Transformation as one of my Mashup Assignments this week. I really liked the idea of showing the transformation of a famous actor through the years and through their works. When trying to think of an actor to choose, I knew I wanted to use someone who had started acting when they were young and continued their career consistently through the years and also someone who I was kind of familiar with.

Dakota Fanning popped up in my head! Movies that she had been in came up easily in my head, for example, War of the Worlds and Twilight. So I knew that she was the actor I wanted to use for this assignment, particularly because you can see her age and progress through each movie that she is in. I chose to use five movies for Dakota because I really wanted to show how she had aged in her works.

For each movie, I went onto YouTube and searched for the particular film and looked for scenes in which really showcased Dakota acting, prominent parts of the movie. Next, I would download the video I wanted in .mp4 format with Pwn YouTube. I opened this file onto MPEG StreamClip and trimmed the portion of the video I wanted where it solely focused on Dakota. Next, I would add that clip onto my Windows Movie Maker file and add a caption onto the first three seconds of the clip that said the movie/year. I did this with each movie and put them in order from earlier works to her most recent.

Here it is:

4 STARS

TOTAL STARS: 4/7

Lindsay Lohan Through the Years

In the Actor Transformation assignment, we were asked to compile clips from movies of a specific actor to show how they changed through the years. I chose Lindsay Lohan because she has one of the most roller coaster lifestyles in the business, so I figured it would be interesting to see how she had changed. As she is continuing to write her life story, I am an advocate for people to turn their lives around to live a rewarding life. Because of this, I decided to add some commentary about hoping she could turn from a life of DUIs and drugs, and continue to live life in the clear. As many kids in the new generation have already turned to drugs, hopefully a comeback story like the one I’m hoping for can inspire kids not to give up on their lives even if they made bad decisions in their past.
I used Wikipedia to have a sort of timeline towards her movies, and simply searched YouTube for Lindsay Lohan clips. I have finally become accustom to downloading movies using “PwnYoutube.” The simplest thing I have found out is that you can just type “pwn” after the “www.” and before the “youtube.com” to instantly download the URL to PwnYoutube. After I had the clips I wanted, I used Windows Movie Maker, and the resulting product was as much as I could hope for after trimming clips and ordering and reordering them. I show clips chronologically from her early career before all of her legal trouble, and then I used a clip from her court scene to represent her unraveling. I then showed a few clips about the movie Machete to show the types of movies she was doing as she was going through her drug and legal problems. Then I use the Matt Lauer clip as a break to show that she had been through rehab as she continues to try and build her career back to a higher esteem. The final thing I did was to split the Jay Leno interview to begin and end the clip. At first I had that at the end, because it fit chronologically as one of her last interviews that showed her as a kid in commercials, and then a clip from her up and coming movie about Elizabeth Taylor. I decided that I could unify the whole video by having the same interview sandwich everything else, and it also worked better chronologically when referring to her career throughout the years. Soo here is the video!

Will Smith Transformation

For this 4 star assignment, Actor Transformation, we had to take clips of an actor and show their development and how they have changed. I chose to do this for Will Smith. He began with Fresh Prince of Bel-air, and moved onto bigger movies such as Men in Black. The Men in Black series show a great progression of Will Smith starting with MIB I in 1997, to MIB II in 2002, and MIB III in 2012. I clipped and trimmed clips in Windows Media Player. Doesn’t look like Will Smith has aged too much, but you can definitely see the difference from Bel-Air to 2012 Will Smith in MIB III.
