A Very Bland Safari

Let us take a little safari thru…my house. So (not) very exciting! I had thought about going somewhere for this but decided that finding things around the house would be plenty hard enough for me. Let’s start with the time.

That seems a little late doesn’t it? Well, you know what they say. Early bird gets the worm, but the late worm gets to live.

That’s a lot of brown. Now that I’m looking at it on my computer, it is not even a good color of wood.

Now that’s more my color. But not my angle. Those curtains really look tall don’t they?

Who dropped my medicine ball?! Oh, wait. I just moved the camera…never mind.

That window really could use a cleaning couldn’t it? Still I think that’s a good picture there.

Look at all those nat 20s! If that were real rolls, that would definitely make me happy.

Well isn’t that a nice looking patterned blanket.

This one looks a little strange. Abstract, one might say.

Santa, why do you have a pumpkin?

A little early but, I think that’ll do just fine.

I think that actually went better than expected. I didn’t get every single photo that was suggested but the ones I got are good. Although, that is subjective. My favorite photo is the one through the window, it may look dirty and junky but, I think its interesting and that is all that matters.

Photoblitz

For this visual assignment, I had to take pictures of objects that dealt with each requirement in 20 minutes or less. It was fun, but also kind of tough because of my disability. But I got some nice pictures.

  1. The 1st picture I took was of the time I started, which was 8:21 at night

Start Time

2. The 2nd picture I had to take was of something that represents Music, and figured that music can come out of the Bose SoundLink Mini that I was listening to. So it can be expressed as the music machine.

3. The next picture I had to take a picture of a some sort of sharp edge on something. So I took a picture of one of desks in my house which has sharp edges, that would surely break a tooth if you fell on it.

Desk Edge

4. After taking a picture of the desk edge, I decided that the best way to take a picture of something that represents loudness was to take a picture of my phone with the volume all the way up on it. If you were to listen to music while at that volume then, your ears would probably hurt.

Phone Loudness

5. This next picture was kind of tough, because I could not find my favorite number listed anywhere in my house. To resolve this I looked up one of my favorite players that wore my favorite number of 3, and took a screenshot of a picture. Allen Iverson is one of the main reasons why my favorite number is 3, because he is pound for the pound the best player in NBA history.

6. After having some issues on photo 5, I was easily able to take a picture of something so close that people shouldn’t be able to guess what it is. So I won’t say what I took a picture of. You have to guess what it is, and the only hint I can tell you is that it is in a house.

7. Then it was dinner time, and I still had to take a picture of something shiny. So I took a close up picture of something that was so shiny that the picture seems to be a selfie, but it’s actually me and my camera reflected back.

Shiny Reflection

8. For the last picture, I wanted it to be the funnest picture to take. That’s why I saved taking a picture of my food in the shape of a face till the end. I used pancakes for eyes, bacon for a mouth and eyebrows, then eggs for a nose.

9. Finally, I took a picture of my end time and it was way less than I thought it was going to be. I thought it would take the whole 20 minutes, but it actually took about only 10 minutes.

The Blitzkrieg

Photo Blitz

This assignment was really cool. I decided to clock my grocery shopping and do it while I was in Wegmans. People looked at me like I was crazy but I ended up getting some great photos. Grocery shopping is a way I relax and I love photography so combinging the two was great. Below are some of my favorite photos from the ‘Photo Blitz.’

1. Take a photo with an interesting shadow.

IMG_1374

This photo was literally from a container of Pumpkin flavored beer. I loved how beautiful it was while still being kind of creepy. The shadow behind the pumpkin is great. It added so much to the photograph. I loved this packaging so much that I bought the beer.

2. Take a photo of someone else’s hand.

IMG_1383

This picture was on a ad for helping hands. I decided to cut out the girl because she would have made the photo uneven. I took a couple pictures where I caught people reaching for produce but I loved this photo the best. The picture had great coloring. This is a #nofilter picture. :)

3. Take a picture with a metaphor.

IMG_1382

First off namaste. I chose this picture because I felt like it had deeper meaning behind it. This is the magazine rack by the front doors in Wegmans. Namaste is a yoga symbol but it also has a deeper meaning of living well and balenced. The sign above it says live well. I think the two were placed together on purpose.

4. Take a picture of two things that do not belong.

IMG_1369

I chose this picture because come on how perfect is the difference between the two. I imagine someone being like “i am going to eat healthy” then walk through the baked goods and be like “nah, cookies it is.” Perfect.

5. Take a picture of something dominated by one color.

IMG_1373I always have to walk through the cheese section of Wegmans. It is just too amazing not to snoop around. It smells terrible but there are so many kinds of cheese my brain and stomach so not know where to go. I like to think of this picture as my ode to cheese. I just love it. Despite it being dominated by the color white, it still has depth and is interesting to look at.

This picture is just all around awesome. It looks like she used a fish eyed lens. The contrast between the sand, sky, and sea is awesome. This is a picture that I would put into my house! She did a great job with the coloring and contrast.

This picture is just so cool. I love the angle of Apollo. He looks very regal. It captures the lizard in great lighting. She did a great job displaying the lizard.

This picture is a great use of shadows. It is really a lighting fixure but she captured it so perfectly that one thinks it is a pumpkin creature. At least that is what I thought. She did a great job catching just the right shadow.

It’s A Photoblitz!

Yesterday I decided to tackle the Photoblitzing assignment for this week. The warning that you should go somewhere with the potential for a diverse range of subjects is really important to completing this. The larger the location, the better. Your house might work, but your apartment probably won’t. The office suite I work in would never have been a good choice, but just outside the building was perfect. So I spent 14 minutes traipsing around the grounds of Wellesley College outside of Clapp Library to complete my photoblitz. I’ve created a slideshow of all of the pictures I took to give a sense of how many you have to take to get a few good ones (unless you are a natural at photography, in which case I am supremely jealous). Discussion of the best ones follows.

The first photo I want to highlight happened by chance. I went over to a fountain/artificial pond next to the library to take pictures of the supremely ugly fountain, but found that there was this one patch of light peaking through the trees overhead that created a light flare on the surface of the water. The light flickered in an unpredictable way. It took several tries, but I managed to get a picture of it at its largest size, creating an interesting effect:

Make an ordinary object look more interesting, almost supernatural.

In looking at the picture, the sci-fi/fantasy fan in me wants to think there is something below the water – a glowing, magical orb, the phospholuminescent eggs of some alien species, a spirit – even though I know it is just a light flare.

I spent a lot of time chasing after interesting shadows. One of the things I found both interesting and frustrating about my shooting location was the fact that there were trees casting shadows everywhere. They formed interesting patterns, but also made the lighting less-than-ideal for a lot of shots. In this particular shot, I managed to get the angle right so that the shadows dominate the image so much that the the area not in shadow is completely washed out thanks to my camera’s autofocus. If you look through the entire collection of photoblitz pictures, there is another with just a tiny bit more of the area not in shadow and you can fully see it because of the camera’s automatic adjustment to the lighting. This one I like because it creates a sort of world’s-edge effect, as though everything drops off after the shadow ends.

One of the trees in the area where I was shooting is a popular picnic spot for students, as it has a great view of the lake. The tree is covered with aging carvings, many of them lovers’ hearts and initials. This particular one I liked because it has been so distorted with time you can’t actually make out the initials, though the heart is still recognizable. Extrapolate whatever trite metaphor about love you like.

This next one happened purely by accident – it was a walking-around-holding-my-phone-in-camera-mode-with-the-thumb-dangerously-close-to-the-button photo that happened to turn out looking great. It looks like it could be one of those weird distortions Mac OS’s Photo Booth has, or possibly a painting as the lines look almost like brush strokes.

Make a photo that is abstract, that would make someone ask, “Is that a photograph?”

Sometimes the accidental photos turn out to be some of the best ones you take. :)

This last one I like to think is my most creative interpretation of the photoblitz requirements. The entrance to the library is guarded by a pair of statues, one armless, the other with a finger pointing to the sky. I believe they represent the two aspects of Minerva, war and wisdom. So I took a picture of Minerva’s hand pointing upward to symbolize knowledge, or perhaps because she’s just had the perfect idea for how to conclude her term paper:
