Recycle Mania

Recycle this media : Your task for this assignment is to mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, imahe and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content. What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?

This week we had to use recycled media from other ds106ers.  The recycle media had a total of about 150 different pictures, videos, and sound clips.  I was originally expecting there to be a lot more of recycled media, and a wider variety.  I was kind of dissapointed by how little audio clips they had that I ended up with a video made of pictures with a sound clip at the end.  I really like the way I used the media to create a story out of it.  I feel like it almost prepared me for my final project in a way of using separate media files and to create one story line.  By now, I’m basically a pro at audacity and iMovie, just kidding! For this assignment I wanted to choose the media first and then create a story line.  I thought this way I would have to be more creative with is, and somehow connect all of the pictures and sound clip.  I think that if I would have come up with a story before I found the media it probably wouldn’t have allowed for my creativity to flow.  For the movie, I decided to add subtitles to make it easier to follow the story line.  I really liked the idea of using media from other people to make something of my own.

Here is my end result:

The recycled media can be found here.

This assigment is worth 3 stars

Recycle Remash

From the 3-star Recycle the Media assignment: During the Fall 2012 iteration of ds106 taught at UMW, we collected media from students that was unused in their previous work uploaded to http://dropitto.me/ds106phonar (the password was “photos4life” newly added media might take some time to be moved- we have to feed the squirrels that do this manual labor). The content was migrated to a public download site, which contains at least 150 images, audio and video http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO.

For my first part of media I wanted to tell a story with a picture.  Cropping pictures into other pictures to see if that changes the idea of an image.  I just grabbed any images that struck my fancy, and most of them were abstract or nostalgic.  The kind of story I made was about a garbage monster who is seeing this rare event where milk falls from the sky into a hole in the ground.  Rumor has it that this milk flows into a reservoir at the University of Mary Washington where they process the milk and use it for as long as it lasts saving the school much money. The second creation I wanted to do was an audio creation (because I love audio) and was going to challenge myself with another five-sound story.  I like the idea of layering sounds, but a lot of the sounds were shorter in length than I anticipated so that brought about a whole new set of challenges that I was happy to try out. (street sounds, sneeze, scrap yeah yeah, ahh, and swish)  This is a mini story of a sped up journey for someone who is moving and they took the train, drove a little by car near the coast, and settled into the city.  The sneezes at the beginning and end mark the start and end of the journey and that even though location changes it doesn’t mean that the person themselves change.  The more and more I listened to it the more and more it seemed haphazard and yet it still made sense.  I think that in order to change this it needed to either be reordered or have things fade into each other a little more effectively.  The sounds currently sound like layers of sounds instead of a story.

Recycle the Media

For the Recycle the Media assignment, my story is of a typical UMW student. Most likely the student is female. So I choose a picture of a bookcase of heels (lucky duck). Then I choose the stair case because most houses around here are indeed two stories. I decided that most UMW students love coffee, thus the picture of Mc Steamy. Then I choose this beautiful picture of leaves and cars. I got a picture of Chandler from the site because I live close to it (as do a lot of students). I put in the picture of nail polish for the fashionable students here who take time to paint their nails. Then, I choose the house where this student “lives”.

All sounds are from Freesound. The sounds are of “hmm”, as in “which shoes today?”. The nest one is of heels click clacking. Then it is of a coffee pot making coffee. The next is leaves crunching under feet. Freesound also has a sound of pages being flipped in a binder, which fits perfectly. Then I had people laughing for the nail polish, like the student was painting her nails in a big group of girls. Then I have snoring to signify sleeping.

The story goes as follows:

Lucy is a UMW student who lives of campus. She wakes up in the morning and picks her shoes from a bookcase of heels. She walks down the beautiful staircase every morning to go get her coffee. She walks to campus everyday because she lives off campus and is ecofriendly. She is a business administration major, so she spends her day in Chandler in lectures and reading her books. She goes back home in the evening and paints her nails with her roommates. Then, she goes to sleep in her quaint little house.

Boom.
