Aol over the years

A site that I like to look at often is aol.com. I remember a long time ago when my parents bought our family’s first computer, and we used aol screen names for the internet and had to pay for it. It’s crazy to think how much things have changed in such a little amount of time. I mean, to us, 15-20 years seems like a long time, but when you consider the time-line of the earth, 15-20 years is like the period at the end of this sentence (actually probably smaller). I really liked this assignment because I didn’t even know a website like this existed, and now I’m probably going to be addicted to the wayback machine. I also really enjoyed this assignment, because, like I explained earlier, it was interesting to see the drastic change that has taken place in such a small amount of time.

This is aol.com in December of 1996. It looks likea pretty general, pretty boring screen. There aren’t many pictures and there aren’t many different sections of text, they are just kind of all in one column. But the interesting thing is that this would have been, visually, a well made website. So yeah, I guess I would describe it as pretty bad at this point in time, but there are a few good things about it. It’s got that whole header and icon at the top thing, which I think carries over to many websites today.

Here it is in July 2000. As you can see, it gets a little more colorful in 2000. You can see the navigation buttons at the top that are still present on many websites today. Even though the ads aren’t showing up, there seem to be a few more ads in this one as well. The design seems to be getting better, however, it is still missing some key things that make good websites today, like a variety of pictures and the screens that flip through top stories.

Here it is in October 2005. It gets even better and more user friendly in 2005. We start to see more headline photographs and the information sections are divided up. That’s because there is more information on the page in 2005 than in 2000 and 1996, which I think is an improvement. But when you look at this one compared to the future pages, you still see that there is some room for improvement. The pages aren’t customized and there are no videos.

And here it is in April 2010. And finally we arrive at a pretty up to date web page design. The things this one has that I like are the personalized backgrounds and there is a video. I know I might sound picky because I just complained that the previous websites didn’t have enough information, however, I also believe that there is such a thing as too much information and I feel like that is what we have come to in 2010. The websites are throwing too much information on a page and it gets confusing.

It was interesting for me to see the change in the website over time. The shift from such a plain, boring website to a well laid out website that is very interactive. There were things I didn’t like about the old website and there are things about the new website that I still don’t like, but I think the constant feedback from consumers keeps the designs constantly changing and they will do nothing but get better and better over time.

Harry Heck

Harry Heck

I was actually watching a part of this movie last night with my parents and when I read the assignment, this guy immediately came to mind. Keep in mind that I’m not a big comic book person so I don’t know if Harry Heck appears regularly in any comics or other movies, but he seemed to have a pretty minor role in this movie. Judging by this scene, I would say Harry started his day with a cigarette, a cup of coffee, and the newspaper. He was probably reading the article about the Punisher in the newspaper. Then, I’m guessing he sat down and started playing his guitar. He finally jotted down some words and threw together this song. I think he probably practiced it a few times then left the house to go buy a suit jacket for this special occasion. After he bought the suit jacket, he returned home and proceeded to paint his fingernails. His fingernails must have still been wet when he was getting dressed, which is why he missed a few buttons on his shirt. After he got all dressed up, he sat down with another cigarette or two and practiced the song a bit more. Once he felt like it was time to go, he placed his guitar in its case and went to go play for the Punisher. I can’t really tell you what he did after the scene because Castle kills him. So I’m assuming nothing happened.

A Daily Routine

So I didn’t really know what kind of story I wanted to make when I first started, but I saw the post on MG79MKIV‘s blog page and got pointed in the right direction. From that post I saw the link to this website. Once I was there, I just started playing some sounds until I heard one about the shower, then I got my idea to do a sound effects story for a morning routine. I also used this site and this site for other sound effects.

Working with audacity wasn’t too difficult at all. I would say it’s pretty user friendly. I’m really please with the way my sound effects story came out. morning routine

Audio Assignmnet

This assignment was awesome!  I found all my sound bites from http://www.mediacollege.com/downloads/sound-effects/ and http://www.pacdv.com/sounds/. Both of these sites had hundreds of free sounds to download.

I save all the sounds I wanted into a folder on my desktop, then opened Audacity and Imported them. It took me about 20 mins or so to get everything synced and set up how I wanted, and then another 10 mins or so of playing with the volume dampers.

This is What I came up with, first try: Sound Effects Story.mp3.

If anybody is/was feeling a lil weary of this assignment, DON’T.  It just takes a lil time to play around with.  That’s it.  It’s fun, and really cool when you get done and get to listen to the finished product.

Playlist Story (Visual Assignment)

This is my visual assignment.  This one was def cool.  Looking through my playlist, I was able to pull songs with the words I was looking for, just by using the search feature in itunes.

It was kinda cool to do a lil love story, b/c I just proposed to my fiancee last night !  We’re both in a lovey mood, and very happy of course, so it was easy to transfer these emotions into a song/story/poem.

This kinda sums up our story, very breifly, in less than 100 words.

( and for those who are wondering, she said YES !)

Design Assignment

So here’s my first design assignment. It was fun to play with and try out some different things. My first two attempts did not work out too well. I ended up doing most of the initial set up in MS Word, then copying and pasting the content to MS Paint, (old school, i know).

The two little MG cars were not created by me. I actually found them online like 2 years ago, and saved them as a GIF file. I don’t have author information, as none was provided then, and since it’s been two years I don’t recall where on the web I found them. But, I will not claim credit for creating them.

This was fun to play around with, and maybe with more practice I can come up with something really cool for my site.
