5 Girls Who Kick Ass…

For the 3.5 star One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds this week, I chose to focus on the archetype of females who kick ass. I’d worked on this assignment when I was doing the preplanning last week.

My video features snippets from

And music from Truth of the Legend by Kevin McLeod

I downloaded the clips with KeepVid and cut them down into sections of approximately one second each with  MPG Streamclip. I deleted the audio from the clips from Alias and Torchwood, as it was random bits of speech and then I imported the clips into iMovie and put them together. I added the audio track then the opening title card and the credits, using the Eurostyle font in the credits before publishing it to YouTube.

I chose this assignment because I did not actually know what an archetype was. When I found out, I was quick to decide to use the Bad Ass Female archetype, as I have studied and talked about it in some of my Gender Studies classes. Katniss Everdeen was the first character that fit this mold to come to mind, but after some thinking and googling, I came up with the rest of the characters to use and quickly went about finding clips of them.

The only thing that I wish I had done differently was to add sounds to the clips of Sydney Bristow and Gwen Cooper. I was not sure how to do it or how to find the right sounds for the clips, since I actually do not often watch action films or television shows.

Despite the sound issue, I am proud of my work and enjoyed doing the assignment.

Visit District 7!

District 7

One of the few problems that I had when I read The Hunger Games was the lack of description about most of the Districts. This did not really affect me in any way until I saw the Minimalist Travel Posters Based In Movies Assignment and I wanted to pick a District to create a travel poster for. I decided on District 7, where Finnick Odair, from Catching Fire and Mockingjay comes from. Although it has yet to be portrayed on film, it will play into Catching Fire when it is released in November.

District 7 is most notable in Panem for its fishing industry and its watery landscape, which I wanted to display in the poster. To keep it minimalist, I settled on focusing just on the water and intentionally chose not to put a fish in my image. I imported this image of a fish and a fish hook into GIMP and cropped out the fish. I then shifted the angle of the fish hook and recolored it before adding “District 7″ in Aaargh, which is becoming my ‘go to’ minimalist font.

I’m really starting to enjoy making minimalist posters and plan to make at least one more for the design challenges this week. They are trickier than they look and they have been a good way for me to learn how to use Gimp.

Creating my First GIF

I’m just going to say it right now that creating a Gif was the hardest thing I did this week.  I did a lot of research on how to do this and downloaded a ton of different software to figure it out.  First thing I saw before I even started thinking about how to make my own gif was Martha’s twitter post about first UMW student (I believe the student’s name was Alex Spangler).  So I clicked on the link to the blog and read a little about how his made his gif.  I also found the tutorial on the DS106 website that I found very helpful: http://ds106.us/handbook/tools/creating-animated-gifs-open-source-software/  The software I downloaded that I actually used was Fastest Youtube downloader, and MPEG Streamclip.  What I found most difficult at first was figuring out how to download youtube videos.  That’s when I read about Fastest Youtube downloader on the tutorial site.  After that it was really easy for me to search for a youtube video to download.  After the video downloaded and I saved it I opened up the MPEG Streamclip.  I followed the directions on the tutorial to shorten the clip to the part I wanted.  I had trouble at first figuring out how to trim, and select in and out of the movie clip, but I finally got it.  I then followed the directions on the tutorial on changing it to other formats.  I changed the format to different screen shots and then I uploaded them to the website http://makeagif.com/ and then it created my gif for me.  It felt really good to me that I figured it out.

So after saying all about the process of how I made my gif and frustrations I had I’m now going to talk about why I chose it.  This scene is from the movie The Hunger Games.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1392170/ In a short summary there are 12 districts that every year they offer up one boy and one girl from each district to fight to the death.  I won’t tell too much for those of you who have not seen the movie. I chose it because it was one of my favorite parts of the movie.  It is when Katniss is saluting district 11, and it is one of the main turning points in the movie that will start a rebellion in the future. I am very happy about how this gif turned out.
