That Bleeping Censor- Goodfellas

I absolutely hate it when works of art are censored for “our own good”. But I felt this assignment would be relatively easy to complete especially since it is worth 5 stars. I chose to work with a scene in the Martin Scorcese classic “Goodfellas”. In this memorable scene, Joe Pesci has the table’s attention at the restaurant. And he drops quite a few f-bombs throughout the scene. So in the nature of all of those nasty, hack, betterment, moral minded, do what I say, not what I do, holier than thou types, I added a few beeps to cover up the use of the f-word. I downloaded the scene from YouTube using www.savefrom.net and got to work.

I found a censor beep on www.freesound.org  and downloaded it. It was a tad long for my uses so I used Audacity to shorten it considerably. I then imported both the video clip and the audio beep file into Wondershare. I began rolling the video and paused at every instance of the word in question and dragged in my beep clip to take the place.

What the Bleep?

Original Scene from The Wire

I found the That Bleeping Censor Assignment, and I really wanted to do it. I of course immediately thought of the scene from season 1 of The Wire, where McNulty and Bunk are investigating an old crime scene, and the only phrases they say the whole scene are “fuck,” “mother fucker,” “mother f,” “what the fuck,” etc. I got a copy of the scene from youtube here, embedded below. I downloaded it, and then used this tutorial to figure out how to censor audio on iMovie (I’m still not sure this is the best way but it wasn’t hard so it worked). I then used iMovie, and using the bleeping sounds provided by the tutorial, I muted the cuss words, and put the bleeping sounds over them. This was a very fun scene to work on because the amount of cuss words I had to censor out. There were parts where the dialogue was “fuck” said about 10 times very quickly. Instead of having a series of little bleeps, which hurt my head to listen to, I had one long bleep. Enjoy!

Cha-Ching Goes The Swear Jar

I’ve wanted to do something with this scene since I saw it in my pre-semester binge-watch of “The Wire”.  It’s a terrific use of photography and positioning, with very little sound and dialogue.  Pretty much the only dialogue is a repeated epithet used with a variety of inflections and emphases. I replaced it with […]

That Bleeping Censor

You get to be the censor of a movie scene or clip.  Choose a sound effect or dialogue you want to substitute for a recurring phrase or expletive, or over-used character speech and use it at the appropriate moments in your movie.

Save your movie on YouTube and embed it into your blog which you will link to this assignment using the appropriate tags.
