Tiger King in minutes

Another assignment that I decided I wanted to do was the Discuss a Film Plot assignment. The title of the assignment pretty much describes what the assignment is supposed to entail.

I wanted to put a twist on this assignment a little bit. Instead of doing a film, I decided to cover the documentary that the world is going crazy about right now: Tiger King.

I watched this documentary last week and oh my gosh, it was a wild ride full of unexpected twists and turns.

My favorite podcast is one that covers true crime documentaries and kinda makes fun of how ridiculous some of them are. This is where I got my inspiration.

My hope was that I could explain everything that happens in the 7 hours of Tiger King in a few minutes while bringing up all of the major points. This is something that could be good for people who want to know the plot and not put all of the time into watching it or even for people who have seen it already and understand what I’m talking about.

Because I tried to make the video shorter, there are a lot of plot pieces I skipped, but the video encompasses most of the major points.

I decided to take a different approach this week and use Powerpoint to make a video after seeing it recommended on our assignment page.

I wrote my script, set up what was going to be on each slide, and then went deep diving on the internet. I did a lot of research as to what videos and pictures I was going to use. You can’t record Netflix, so I was watching and pulling a lot of videos from YouTube.

For most of the videos, I edited them in my computer’s editing software and then put them into the powerpoint. I did a lot of trimming, splicing, and audio adding/muting. On the slides that I used just pictures, I would record audio and upload it to the slides.

I then set the transitions and set the timing for each slide so that it could be played on it’s own when exported as a video.

It’s not super smooth, but I think it’s pretty decent for a slideshow. If I had to do it again, I would try to make the slideshow flow better as well as maybe making one audio file and playing it over the entire show. But, I didn’t have the time to do that this week.

I think that I spent at least 7 hours on this project. The assignment itself is only 3 stars, but I’m going to say because of all of the time and effort I put into it that it is the equivalent of 6. So, a little over an hour per star.

Hopefully there aren’t any copyright issues and you are able to view the video. I couldn’t upload it on Vimeo because it exceeded to amount I could upload.

“Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” in Less than 16 minutes

For my first video assignment, I chose Discuss A Films Plot (3 stars). However, I did my own twist to it and decided to discuss the plot of a South Korean drama that I had the pleasure of rewatching recently. The drama is none other than Guardian: The Great and Lonely God (2016), more widely known as Goblin. I chose to do this instead of a movie, not only because I wanted to share this amazing story with you all, but also because I couldn’t think of a specific film that I knew the ins and outs of enough to summarize the plot.

Nonetheless, this was quite the endeavor, since it’s a 16-episode drama, with each episode ranging from 1 hour to 1.5 hours! That means there’s a lot of content and little details that I had to skim over. The biggest challenge for me was finding all the clips I wanted without downloading the episodes themselves. I cheated a little by including some compilation videos and the trailer. That said, there were some scenes I wanted to use but could not successfully download, so some cuts and edits may seem out of place or repetitive. My other struggle was balancing the audio, so in some places it’s a little off.

Overall, I enjoyed working on this assignment. There’s definitely more that could be improved on. If I had the battery and storage space–as well as more time–I would download the episodes and find the scenes I’m looking for myself. I would also fix the audio issues. It was a challenge to condense 16 episodes into less than 16 minutes, but hopefully I was able to do it justice and catch some interest among fellow viewers!

Back to the Future Commentary

This week I have taken advantage of these video assignments to create my ’80’s girl character’ that I disussed in my project ideas blog.

For this assignment we were tasked with creating a video that discusses a film’s plot. I decided to continue the discussion I started in my radio show about the fashion trends in the movie Back to the Future. In this video I was able to give visual representations of some of the examples I cited in my radio show from a couple weeks ago.

To create this assignments I found 2 video clips from the movie, one clip from the beginning and, one from the ending. I trimmed these clips to only show visual examples of some of fashion trends I discussed a few weeks ago. Then I added my voiceover to explain and point out the certain instances.

Spoiling Big Daddy

For this weeks assignments we had the option of joining a group and creating a video project or completing video based assignments. Being that I live off campus I decided to take the assignment route and had a blast doing so. For my first assignment I really wanted to do something new, add something to the video assignment list. I ended up creating a new assignment in which you take clips or scenes from a film or show and then create a voice over in which you discuss the overall plot of the story. I thought of this while watching Big Daddy and thought that this would be a really great addition to the assignment bank. For my project I ended up using Movavi, a video editing software, and used key scenes from Big Daddy to show the plot of the story. I then recorded a quick voice over and discussed the plot and key information regarding the characters and plot. I had blast creating it and I hope others decide to give it a try.

Discuss a Films Plot

Using a movie editor software, use clips or scenes from a film or show and do a voice over in which you tell the overall plot of the story.
