DS106 Food Time With Cap’n Markish

The “McGangbang” is a food product made out of two McDonald’s sandwiches off of the dollar menu that causes much controversy amongst people who like to cause controversy over stupid things. People will argue with you about many different things, including where it originates, what goes in it, and what the name of it is. This has made me come up with the subgroup of the sandwich called the “Virginia McGangbang.”
I feel like it’s important to point out that I do not condone the name of the sandwich, but this brings me to my first point. The sandwich is actually recognized by the name “McGangbang” in many McDonald’s (especially in my area), so much so that you can actually order it by name. People can literally walk up to the counter and say “I’ll have a McGangbang,” and the person will make it for you, without the extra bread. Thus, the name sticks.
Most people agree that the sandwich originates from Daytona Beach, Florida, where you take a Spicy McChicken sandwich, and put it between the patties of a McDouble. The main problem with this, is that not all McDonald’s carry Spicy McChickens. Thus, the variations come in to spice up the sandwich. The most important concept, is the fundamental blueprint of using sandwiches off of the dollar menu, and combining them.
The way I was taught to make it the first time, is the way I stick to making it. I actually thoroughly enjoy this artery clogging sensation enough to make it from time to time. I was told to buy a McDouble, and add the Big Mac sauce (Mac Sauce for short). You also buy a McChicken and add cheese, because heck, who doesn’t want more cheese? You then split the patties down the middle and insert your McChicken sandwich into the middle, and mash it together. The result is a beefy, chicken-y goodness that can only come from the mind of a broke college student who was tired of eating the same things every day. Another development is that the McGangbang has led to the creation of a more expensive and larger sandwich entitled the “Man Sandwich” that you can also order by name at many McDonalds. The concept of ordering off of the dollar menu is neglected, but the same principle of splitting patties and adding chicken sandwiches is there. The Man Sandwich is consisted of a Double Quarter-Pounder with Cheese; add Mac Sauce, and a Country Style Chicken Sandwich; add cheese.
When I read the requirements for the assignment Cooking Show, I felt almost entitled to share this delectable treat with the DS106 world. My friend Victor and I set off to the nearest McDonald’s, and acted out the making of this food of Gods. I asked my friend to use a recording technique where he comes up from behind me, and then sits down at the table, as almost personable, yet had an almost Nightly News feel to it. I asked him to shoot the scene lower than usual to emphasize the sandwich, and then raise up and emphasize me at the conclusion. Before he began recording, I thought it would be funny to use the receipt as a scene card. I feel like the effects worked well to give me the look I was looking for. One more point, I can’t stop laughing in these videos. Enjoy!

Cooking Show

  • Cooking Show, this assignment consisted of making a recipe in steps to the end product, and here is the link. None of the other students work opened up for me to look at but I got my idea from watching the food network.
  • I enjoy cooking and wanted to feel like a chef does on a show when they are being taped on video. Again I enjoy cooking. My inspiration come from cooking shows. Well now that I am in college I have to learn to cook so I can eat everyday and be healthy.
  • In my cooking show I made homemade noodles with a homemade soup base. Using different ingredients. One thing i did different from most people is I did a lot of free hand in the amount of ingredients put into the meal where as most people have set amounts of what is supposed to be put in to make a meal.
  • I used my friends iflip to video the steps to making my meal and then I used the iflip program to put the video together. I added a title and credits. I also added background music  that the iflip program has to make it more like a food show.
  • Towards the end my roommates decided to be idiots and started yelling stupid thing and I did not know how to mute or cut it out. So that is the only thing I think needs to be figured out.

Its Cooking Time!

  • I did the Cooking Show assignment. Here we had to create a meal/food on video and describe what we were making just like on the Food network channel. I also watched a video on how to make popcorn which i thought could have been done a little better, though I know its hard to cook as well as be on camera to describe it.
  • As soon as I saw this assignment I wanted to do it because I am a huge fan of cooking and the cooking channels. I’ve always wanted to try and when i see competition shows that is something they have to be able to do. My mom and I have always joked saying we should try to compete one day, but after this assignment I realized its a lot harder than you would think. I really like to cook so it was cool to experience having to describe each step and so forth, because usually when I do cook its just automatic actions, and not too much thought. Though I just did Ramen for this assignment, I must say I do cook a variety of things :)
  • For this video I again used my Iflip, so the same process was used as the video made for describing my apartment. I was abel to add a Title, credits, and music throughout the video. This is a story of putting together a meal. Being creative and inventive on camera, and at the same time having to describe your thoughts, and engage the audience. As well as making your food look appealing.
  • So again I used the iflip program and its very easy and automatic. The only hard thing in tihs program is you can only cut out the beginning or end of a video. So I just made sure I wouldn’t mess up and that’s why I chose to do something easy like Ramen. In the program I added a Title, and Credits. Then they had an option of their own music which I chose and added it softer than the voices in the video.
  • I asked my suitemates and they actually liked the video and enjoyed the ramen that was made. They said i could have interacted a little more to get the audience engaged.

3 Stars: Cooking with Wine

Video number 2 this week is my very own cooking show, performed for the assignment “Cooking show“! Featuring me having a mental breakdown! How fun! More exclamation points!  But yeah, once I realized that I would be doing all of the cooking in one take and that I had no one available to help me film, I started to get a little worried about the quality of the video.

I really wish I had more money so that I could afford more food in order to do multiple takes.  You’ll notice there’s no technique being shown in the video; that’s because I had to hold one hand while doing everything (also, my technique is wrong, but that’s a story for another day).  The one handed shakey cam can get really old really quickly, but please stick with the video: you might actually learn how to make something delicious!

This is the link to the recipe I was going off of when I made the chops.  As for the fries, I don’t really have a recipe: it’s just a thing that you sort of learn new things when you make more.  I had been meaning to make the pork recipe for a while and the chops went on sale for a pretty good price that week so I finally caved and decided to try out the recipe.  I had some leftover sweet potatoes from a few other cooking experiments and decided to chop those up into fries.  They made an excellent side dish to the pork.  I would highly recommend some broccoli or collard greens to go along with this dish, I just didn’t have much money to spend to get vegetables to go with it.

Again, I ran all of the clips through windows movie maker and added transitions where appropriate and titles.  Please excuse how disorganized the clip seems, I was trying to do too much at once between filming and cooking.  But the chops turned out fantastically, and that pan sauce I mention making was excellent as well (it was my first time making a pan sauce).

6/16 stars down.  Good eats, everyone!

Ashley’s Cooking Show 3* (Should be more!)

For this assignment, we were asked to create a cooking show. It just so happened that my boyfriend and I had decided to make dinner together that night! We made Chicken with Peppers and Garlic Alfredo Sauce. We cook dinner together every night he stays… so every night. LOL

The ingredients for my dish are as follows;

You will need:
1 Pepper, your choice of color
1 small onion (optional) (did not use in video) (boyfriend doesn’t like onions)
1 Box of Penne Pasta
1 lb of Chicken
1 jar of Alfredo Sauce
1 Canister of Shakey Cheese (grated parmesan)

Here’s the video on how to make it!

Cooking Show: chocolatey chocolate cake

Do you love cooking? Why not make your favorite recipe in front of the camera? Host a cooking show in your own kitchen and show us how it’s done. We’re not all Jamie Oliver, but we can try (see how he does it)

I did this project with my Mac laptop recording every section. Then uploded all the mini clips into the software i movie and I added text so it gives a step by step proces then I added usic from i tunes and deleted all the backgrounfd noise that was made in the kitchen. Assignment Value five Stars *****

Cooking Show

I literally can’t cook anything so the microwave has become my best friend, so i decided i would show the world the art of microwaving a bag of gourmet popcorn

Caramel Brownies…you know you want some

Now, I’m not much of a cook. My cooking expertise is pretty much limited to Top Ramen, spaghetti, and hot dogs. However, I do like to think that I can whip up some decent bakery items…so for the Cooking Show Assignment, I decided to do my favorite brownie recipe, one that I stumbled upon online a year or so ago. The recipe proved to be a simple one that yielded delicious brownies. Since then I have made them many times for myself, family, and for bake sales hosted by my rugby team. They have been well received on all of these occasions! Here is the original page where I found the recipe; I’m also going to paste the ingredients and method here:

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. (18.25 oz.) chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup chopped nuts ( Optional )
  • 1 cup Evaporated Milk
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, melted
  • 35 (10-oz. pkg.) caramels, unwrapped
  • 2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350º F
  2. Mix 2/3 cup of evaporated milk, butter, and cake mix
  3. Spread half of batter into ungreased 13×9 inch baking pan
  4. Bake for 15 minutes
  5. Heat caramels and 1/3 cup of evaporated milk until melted
  6. Sprinkle morsels over brownie and drizzle with caramel
  7. Spread remaining batter over top
  8. Bake 25-30 minutes

I made the video in iMovie, and the footage was kindly filmed by my sister (she was rewarded with a brownie, don’t worry). I cut away a lot of extraneous footage and sped up some parts so that you wouldn’t have to watch me stir for minutes on end. I used the voiceover tool extensively in this project, to explain what I was doing. I got the music from incompetech, which I decided to try out after hearing the success of my fellow classmates after presentations this week, who used the site for various projects. I selected on a track called “Sunshine, Version 2″ that was upbeat but still mellow. It kind of sounds like the music you’d hear in a dental office but I like it.

So here’s the video, hope you enjoy it, and if you make the brownies let me know how they turn out!!

DS106 Cooking Show

This is my cooking show!

THE ASSIGNMENT:  Host a cooking show in your own kitchen, and show everyone how it’s done.

THE PROCESS:  I used a program called You Cam to record this video.  The picture quality is not very good, and you do not have the option of pausing and resuming while recording, it has to be one continuous video.  I do not own a video camera, so this was my only option.  I filmed myself cooking and then uploaded this video to You Tube, after this was successfully uploaded, I then embedded this short film to my WordPress page, and that was it!

THE STORY:  I needed to do a DS106 assignment on a new category, and the video assignment was the one I chose this time.  When I came across this assignment I instantly knew that this was going to be the one for me because I love to cook, and more importantly I love to eat.  I knew that it would be difficult for me to record this: #1) because I don’t have a “real” camera, and #2) I needed to chose something quick and simple to make because I didn’t have the option of pausing while filming.   If I tried to give a cooking tutorial on chicken parmigiana, it would end up being an hour long video, and nobody has time to watch that (not even my devoted professor) .  I thought that it would only be necessary for me to prepare a Japanese dish, so I chose sashimi because it is very simple to prepare, also one of my favorite things to eat.  In the end, I’m fully satisfied with the outcome of this project, it was fun and I would recommend this assignment to anyone taking this class.

Dorm Room Cooking with Jeremy

The Assignment: I was looking through the different ds106 categories for something I hadn’t tried before, and came across this assignment. Since I’ve always loved cooking, and was once a first place winner in the Northwest high school culinary competition, I thought this would be really fun to do.

The assignment instructions say:

Do you love cooking? Why not make your favorite recipe in front of the camera? Host a cooking show in your own kitchen and show us how it’s done. We’re not all Jamie Oliver, but we can try (see how he does it)

The Process/Story: I pretty much told the story of why I chose the assignment above, and why I’m doing dorm room cooking in the video. As for the process, I filmed the whole video using the camera on my iPod touch (its 0.69 megapixel camera is why the video is so grainy.) I filmed and did everything at the same time, holding my iPod in one hand, and cooking with the other, occasionally switching hands.

After filming, I opened Adobe After Effects, a video editing program I am accustomed to through typesetting in fansubs. I imported them into the project through drag and drop, then created a new composition out of the main video.

I used the AE’s cut feature to edit out some of the parts that were unnecessary, then appended the 2nd video from the morning to the end of the the timeline.

Using the Time Warp filter that’s built into AE, I sped up one of the parts where I opened the bag of raisins, increasing the playback speed to 545%.

Next, I added some text boxes that emphasize particular points by creating a new shape layer, then adding a text layer above that. To get the fade effect, I parented the text layer to the shape layer, then added opacity keyframes towards the end of each bubble, fading out from 100% opacity to 0% opacity.

To top it all off, I added background music that fit the mood of what was happening in the video. I just went to the “Anime Soundtracks” playlist on my iPod touch, and found 7 songs I used because they perfectly matched the mood I was going for:
Wakare 2 (Separation 2) from Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop) — Chosen because it has a sad, tragic feel to comemerate the loss of my stolen food.
Daikichi to Rin (Daikichi and Rin) from Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop) — A nice, cheery mood to match talking about getting the free rice cooker.
Taiyou no Te ~Avant Title~ (Solar Hands ~Advance Title~) from Yakitate!! Japan (Freshly Baked!! Japanese Bread) — Has a triumphant sound, and is a nice lead in.
Yakitate!! Japan (Freshly Baked!! Japanese Bread) from the show with the same name — This song was designed to be played in the background of people cooking, so how could there be anything better?
Namaiki Butter Roll (Audacious Butter Roll) from Yakitate!! Japan (Freshly Baked!! Japanese Bread) — Also designed to be played during cooking, but has a different sort-of wind down feel to it.
Sunset ~Like Dawn~ from Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai (We Still Don’t Know the Name of the Flower We Saw that Day) — The sun is setting, the day is coming to an end, and it’s almost time for sleep.
Dedicated to the Birds from Amagami SS (Sweet Bite SS) — This has a very “Good Morning!!!” feel to me, and just sounds like a “start of a new day” song to me.

After that, I simply rendered the video out to an avi file using AE’s Composition>Pre-render option.

As for why I chose to make oatmeal for my video… No, oatmeal isn’t my favorite recipe (like the instructions say). I was originally going to show how to make my favorite type of cookies, World’s Best Cookies, but that is a secret family recipe and would be too hard to record even if it wasn’t. Then I noticed that Clio did this assignment too, but I thought that all that chocolate and sugar wasn’t a very healthy breakfast. So, I decided to show how to do something easier and healthier since I needed breakfast the next morning anyway.
