Silent Kingsman

For my first assignment this week, I decided to Return to the Silent Era. I kept this up with the class theme by having my movie scene be from the Spy Movie Kingsman… Do you sense the trend I am going on here? literally, everything I do is on Kingsman. I’ll eventually stop but today’s not the day. This probably has something to do with my Agent. She gets most of her inspiration from Agent Harry Hart. What a cool guy.

The assignment was to do it on a trailer, but I decided to use the bar fight scene instead because
A) The trailer had too much dialogue
B) The fight scene looked way better in black and white

To make the title cards, I googled a title card image and used canva to add the text. I used a font that seemed kind of oldish cursive but I could not get the color right, so I stuck with white.

I used windows movie maker and split the scenes where I needed to add the title card, and muted the entire thing. The bar scene had a soundtrack playing in the background, and I decided to keep that because it was such good music and I feel like if I picked any other song, I wouldn’t do the scene justice.
Because of the dialogue cards that were added, It messed up the music just a tad smidge so I had to play around with when it started so that the music ended at the perfect with the last blow the spy used.

Check out my final product! This assignment was rated 4 1/2 stars.

Silent Shrek

????½

So I saw this assignment and knew I had to try doing it. Unfortunately, Movie Maker isn’t the best at making this appear silent movie-y, but I tried my best. I went onto YouTube and looked around for random scenes from movies that I could possibly use. I ended up finding this one from Shrek:

It seemed perfect for this assignment. There’s some dialogue and some running away, the two staples of silent movies. I downloaded the scene and threw it into Movie Maker. Whenever there was some dialogue and then the shot changed, I inserted a title card to show the dialogue. I wanted to try using some actual title cards off the internet, but I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to insert them into Movie Maker. Instead, I just used an old timey font (Poor Richard to be specific), and hoped for the best.

I was able to use Movie Maker to make the whole scene in black and white, though I wasn’t able to add a filter that made it look like it was on some old film, which was disappointing. If I were to redo this, I’d want to figure out how I could add that in, since the grainy effect would do a lot for the final product. I also sped up the scene a bit, since it always seems like the action in silent movies is a bit faster than in real life. Lastly, I listened around on YouTube for some good silent movie music. I ended up finding one that I think fits the scene pretty well. I considered using several pieces of music, but I felt like that’d be a bit much for a scene that only clocks in at about 4 minutes.

Here’s the final product!

Wonder Woman ca. 1918

I was intrigued by the idea of aging a movie trailer to make it appear to be from the silent era.  It essentially admits that silent films are a separate art in and of themselves, with unique pros and cons (while of course also providing the opportunity for a humorous editing project).  As such I immediately began to rack my brain for recent movie trailers… Then I hit upon the new trailer for Wonder Woman.  Not only is it a beautiful example of a modern movie trailer, but the setting of the film is WWI.  I could essentially edit the trailer to match the time-period of the film itself!  As such, I realized that it would be the perfect candidate to return to the silent era.

This video assignment posed a unique challenge, in that I have a great deal of experience with editing video, but haven’t had much need to use effects.  So I began playing around with different options in the effect room of Cyberlink PowerDirector (my video-editing software), and found an effect called “Old Movie” that seemed to fit my needs.  However, I adjusted the background color, as the original seemed to filter with a strange sort of mustard yellow that just seemed odd.  I also realized that my video still seemed too smooth.  It now was black and white with aged lines, but the actual playback wasn’t jumpy.  I ultimately decided to combat this by adjusting the playback speed.  I’ve actually been searching for a way to edit speed for a while now, and now had real motivation to properly investigate.  Combing through the designer options yielded nothing, nor the effects room.  I ultimately opted to try a Google search, and voila!  The answer turned out to be in the Power Tools section of my software.  I then sped up my footage to make it jerkier.

After adjusting the playback speed, I began to work with title cards (specifically this one), stretching my selected card to fully fit the 16:9 aspect ratio.  I opted to use subtitles to insert the dialogue.  This was a bit of a pain, as it was difficult to center the dialogue, and timeline adjustments usually meant adjusting the placement of all the following subtitles.  I also used Incompetech to select my silent film music, ultimately choosing a bouncier intro piece and a more dramatic distressed piece for the latter half of the trailer.  After making small adjustments here till the video met my satisfaction, I published the final product on YouTube.

The final product looks relatively well aged.  Personally, I most enjoy the mashup of WWI battle scenes with this silent film style.  The two mash together quite well, and helped affirm my trailer selection.

Video Assignment – Return to the Silent Era

In this assignment, you take a clip from a movie, and try to make it look like a film out of the silent era. This is usually accomplished by removing the sound, turning it black and white, and adding some sort of filter, while adding in background music and title cards. I chose the shootout from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and presented it as an informational video produced by my character. He has had many odd jobs in his life, but now he can add video producer to the list.

This was a fairly difficult process. I first cut the clip out of the movie in Premiere Pro, and then spent time separating it for later editing. Most of the work was in After Effects, where I spliced sounds, audio, text, video, and pictures together to create the final project. I followed this tutorial, but it was still a lot of work.

Kingsman: The Secret Service Silent Trailer

For this assignment, I had to make a 3-5 minute movie trailer formatted the same way as movie trailers from the silent era where the trailers had black & white, silent dialogue, musical backgrounds, and title cards.

The movie trailer that I decided to use for the assignment was Kingsman: The Secret Service. I chose this trailer because it was right at 3 minutes at 2:55 and I actually really liked this movie. It was action-packed and comedic, which are exactly the types of movies that I have always liked. Plus, I figured a spy movie would be perfect for a silent era trailer.

For completing the assignment, I used Firefox once again to convert the trailer from Youtube to the compatible MP4 used in iMovie. After importing the trailer into iMovie, I placed the silent era filter onto the trailer; but it still had sound, so had to use another feature of iMovie to mute all sound.

I didn’t know what title cards were until I looked them up. Then after putting the trailer together, I tried to spreading them out throughout using vague explanations to keep the audience still informed about what the trailer is about. It was quite easy to create the cards because it was yet another feature that could be used in iMovie.

The last thing that I needed to do for the trailer was put in some movie soundtrack music for the background. I wanted music that was instrumental and would build up throughout the trailer. I searched through my iTunes looking for anything instrumental, until I realized that the only movie soundtrack music I had that was instrumental would fit perfect with the trailer. It was the soundtrack music from the first Transformers movie by Steve Jablonsky called “Arrival to Earth” and the song was continually building up. I decided to test out the music on the trailer, and then watched it. It matched everything that I wanted out of the trailer; so I kept it in the trailer.

To conclude, I am really proud of the end result of this silent era trailer.

Silent Era Star Wars

Behold! My Old Fashioned Star Wars Trailer. The assignment can be found here: Return to the Silent Era Assignment.

The Assignment was worth 4 1/2 stars but I thought it was easier than I thought it should have been. It still took some time to figure everything out in Window’s Movie Maker and to find all of the files that I used. I chose Star Wars because in the assignment description, the example was for a star wars trailer and there’s a new star wars coming out soon so I thought it was appropriate. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone else chose this trailer as well!

The notecards in between scenes are kind of silly. I tried for a while to put together a cohesive story but I ended up failing and just going with the super simple plot line that you can see in the movie.

The Silent Suicide Squad

Yesterday, I was going through my things and found this gem. It is footage from the Suicide Squad back when silent films were really popular. As you can see, the film is bit blurry and hard to watch. Probably from all of the wear and tear. If you look close enough, you see that the actors look rather similar to the ones in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. In fact, the clip itself looks almost identical to one of the recent trailers. It’s pretty strange if you ask me. I will continue to see if I can dig up some more clips of this lost film and get back to you guys.

For this four and half star assignment, I decided to use one of the Suicide Squad trailers and edit it to make it like a silent movie. The only reason why I chose this over any other trailer is because I am a big fan of the comics and I am excited to see how it transfers over to film. To create this assignment, I used the program, Sony Vegas Pro 13. I’ve had it for awhile now and I have a lot of experiences using it in the past for assignments and just for fun.

Other than the standard and straightforward editing, I used some Film Effects shown below to make the project resemble a silent film.Untitled2I also used Film Grain as an effect to help the project look even older.
Untitled

After 30 minutes of processing, I uploaded the video to YouTube and tweeted it out. It was bit time consuming, but it wasn’t all too hard.

I hope you guys enjoyed my video!

I Could Use Something Quiet with All This Noise

My mind is still in a knot. I do not very much know how to use one of these computers, but Doc tried to show me around an old one before I agreed this would be a better place for…

A Modern Take on Silent Films.

Continuing along the path of curiosity, I delved down deeper into the history of Disney movies and decided to watch the creative company’s most recent one, Big Hero 6, as this particular four-and-a-half star assignment required to transform a modern film into a silent one, which was a quite common form of entertainment during my teenaged years.

Even during all those times Beau and I frequented the cinema, we never saw a film quite like this! Though there is some notably good art to be found in my day and age, I never imagined that interpretation and animation would have become so astoundingly awesome! Nor did I imagine that the central subject of the film would be a ROBOT … I haven’t laughed so hard since I don’t remember when, nor have I cried. Clearly Baymax and Hiro are an utterly endearing pair if could be moved to such emotion!

The future of art and creativity in genereal is incredibly bright, and I simply can’t wait to see what’s to come.Screen Shot 2015-03-28 at 10.13.24 AM

Jaeger Bomb

So Pacific Rim is one of my favorite movies. Mainly because it’s the stupidest movie I’ve ever seen and I love every second of it.

If you haven’t seen it, shame on you. SHAME.

There’s no Victoire reference here at all. I just REALLY like this movie and am PUMPED that they are making another one.

I actually really tried to do this assignment justice- the point of the assignment is to take a trailer and make it look old.

The upload time to youtube ALONE shows, like, hella dedication.

…I really hope the work shows and that you guys like it.
