Got a Little Crazy

I was browsing through the video assignments in the DS assignment bank and came across Watching Movies with the Stereo On {***}. I always feel like certain songs go with certain clips in movies – this assignment was perfect for me! I knew just what I was going to do.

The Hangover. Oh yeah. And for the song……..{drumroll}…….. Got a Little Crazy – Kenny Chesney. So perfect.

This was going to be good.

I started by converting this YouTube clip into an MP4 file with KeepVid. That website is a lifesaver! I uploaded that clip into my Windows Movie Maker. I already had the song on my iTunes, so I was ready to get clipping, trimming, and going! Here is my clip:

I first took out the sound of the original video clip. Then, I trimmed the clip to get exactly what I wanted. I made sure that the song and the clip went together in the best way! The song is so perfect for the clip that I chose. It almost fits too well. I’m surprised this clip wasn’t on the movie, or the second movie….maybe it will be on the third! :) Next, I uploaded the audio file into my Windows Movie Maker and changed the settings to fade out. So when my video is close to being done, the song is fading out. And viola, my clip was done.

I was laughing so hard at my video once it was all done. It went together so well with the song that it was just comical. I’m going to go watch that movie when I am done writing this blog post. And if you have never seen this movie….well, tsk tsk.

I love experimenting with the different effects that Windows Movie Maker has to offer. It is super easy to navigate this program. And you can upload it straight to YouTube {which is what I have been doing}. I am kind of sad that I am already at 11 stars :( I guess I will have to keep this kind of stroytelling in mind!!!

Watching Movies with the Stereo on

  • Watching Movies with the Stereo on, in this assignment we had to mute the clip of a movie and add music to go along with the movie, here is the link. For some reason I was not able to look at any students work because they were not opening up for me but I was able to see the example provided and it was just of a war scene with fast paced music to go with the movie.
  • I chose this assignment because I wanted to see what it is like to watch a movie with music playing and how the movie plays out. I love the movie Happy Feet and so I used it to complete this assignment.  It relates for me because Happy Feet is one of my favorite movies and the music I chose to go with it is one of todays hits.
  •  I got a clip of the penguins dancing in Happy Feet off youtube and then used movie maker to add the audio. I used the song called Wobble and it goes with the movie because the penguins are wobbling. I was actually laughing after I was done with this video because they both go well together and its funny.
  • I got the clip called fiesta of the penguins on youtube. Used movie maker to add the song in.
  • Some people that I showed, the video made them laugh because the penguins are cute and they are wobbling so the song goes well.

Lead Me Through The Fire Swamp

Watching Movies With the Stereo Onds106 Video Assignment worth 3 stars

Like when you have a movie playing on TV without the sound and you’ve got the stereo on at the same time. Take a clip from a movie, remove the audio, and add audio from a song or radio show that, somehow, kind of fits. See my two examples.

The original video:

The original audio – a clip I own from Lead Me – Sanctus Real.

This assignment turned out way better than I had actually hoped.  The timing worked out great.

I decided to stick with my Princess Bride theme that has been prevalent this week.  I pondered on my own personal music collection, while browsing through some videos from YouTube.  While looking at some fire swamp clips, the song above came to mind, and it crossed my mind that it would be perfect.

I sang the song quietly to myself while watching the part of the clip I wanted, and it worked out so perfectly that the ROUS attacks right when the chorus sings about being willing to fight.  Awesomeness.

I shortened the audio clip to just the chorus using Audacity, and edited the video clip in MPEG Streamclip.  There, I stripped the original audio track, and trimmed it down to have it start where I wanted it to (just as they have stood back up and he begins to lead her onward again after falling in the sand pit).

I tried to use YouTube’s Video Editor to put them together, but it wouldn’t allow me to add my music clip either in Firefox or Chrome.  I finally went to Windows Live Movie Maker, and had an easier time there.  The beginning timing was already perfect, so I just had to trim it to 42 seconds to get it to end where I wanted it to, and publish.

50 Eggs

I chose to do this assignment because I was talking about the movie Cool Hand Luke with a friend and it was the first movie that came to mind. And then I was trying to think of a song that had to do with eating a lot and I was reminded of my days of Weird Al Yankovic. Thus, the reason for my choices. To create this, I ripped the video from youtube using the keepvid.com, and then edited it using iMovie, which was a lot more simple than I thought. I removed the sound from the video, and added in my own music–also ripped from youtube. Then, I uploaded it to youtube using iMovie, and voila! Here is the result.

Die Young in the Hunger Games

Watching film with the stereo on

For this assignment I chose Ke$ha’s “Die Young” to go over top the cornucopia blood bath scene of the Hunger Games. I like the juxtaposition of the up beat music with the brutal and bloody scene of the movie. Also, I was able to match up the lyrics really well with the events in the clip. I used YTD Video Downloader to download the clips and convert the Hunger Games clip to an MP4 file so that I could edit it in streamclip. I then used YTD it convert them to Windows Media Files so that I could work with it in Windows Movie Maker. For the Ke$ha video I used YTD to convert it in to an MP3 and edit it in audicty. In Movie Maker I imported my edited clips and worked them until I was happy with the timing.

Watching a movie with the Stereo on…

The next Video Assignment that I decided to do was the “watching a movie with the stereo on” assignment in which you take a movie clip and replace the sound with a song by choice.

I chose this assignment because I realized that this scenario actually occurs a lot in my life. Being a college student and watching a movie in your room with three other roommates can really be difficult when one or more of them isn’t watching the movie and choses to play music in their room instead. I then realized that there are a lot of times where the song they are playing kind of correlate with the movie I may be watching… So, for this assignment I decided to use a scene from the movie “Up” because I recently watched it and it’s one of my favorite movies. As I was thinking about this assignment this particular movie quickly came to mind. I simply downloaded the movie scene onto my computer then   imported it into my iMovie and began to think of a song that I thought could fit the movie well. After a little while of thinking I came up with the song “Just to see you smile” by Tim McGraw, which is also one of my favorite country songs. I figured out that the scene and the song correlate well together because in the beginning of the song and the movie it represents happy times and as they both progress things begin to fall apart. I didn’t realize how well these two worked together until I listened to the song over the clip in my iMovie and realized that the song basically represents this scene completely. The song fits the events in this particular clip just as if it was made for this movie. Since I already found a scene that did a lot of the work… I simply shortened it and cut out a portion of it, but I didn’t really change the scene completely, there was no need for this particular assignment. I found that this is a story because the music tells the life and love of Carl and Ellie in the movie through the scene choice…. The movie scene shows a huge portion of the movie “Up” and by adding the song you get a glimpse of what the movie is about as well, except without the actual words from the movie involved. I asked one of my friends that I know also loves this movie to check out my work and she thought it was PERFECT. She said the song basically represented the relationship of Carl and Ellie to a T. I felt really proud of my work after she said that… I hope others that have seen the movie feel the same way too. Here’s the video:

Howling for Lady and the Tramp

The assignment Watching Movies with the Stereo on seemed pretty basic. It involves to take a clip of a movie and add audio that somehow fits with the clip. When I looked at it I wasn’t aware of how cutting the movie and the music to fit together is key! I tried looking at some examples but found that most of the websites didn’t work (a problem I seem to be running into a lot). However, the two examples that were on the assignment gave me an idea. The music really fit with the beat of the clips. My personal favorite was the Circle of Life/Frankstein combinations. The play on the clip of making Frankstein is a bit comical with the meaning of the Circle of Life song.

I’m not sure why I chose this assignment. I think it was mainly because it seemed simple to me. And I really liked the examples that were with it. When I decided to do this assignment my mind blanked on a song and movie that would go together. So, like I always do, I asked my roommate. We sat there and contemplated movies (She’s the Man and UP). I decided I definitely wanted to do an animated movie. As we were discussing I also decided that a play on words would work for this assignment. We finally came up with the song Howling for you by the Black Keys. We figured a dog movie would go perfect with this song. The next step was coming up with a movie with dogs (All dogs go to Heaven, Oliver and Company, and Homeward Bound all came to mind). We decided the Lady and the Tramp spaghetti scene would go great. I realized this was a slower clip and I assumed I was going to have to speed it up a bit to go along with the upbeat of the song. However, when I played them separately together there was a part in the clip that would fit perfectly with the song. I converted the movie clip using Real Player and uploaded it to Windows Movie Maker. The song and the clip went perfectly together! I was absolutely thrilled! I didn’t have to cut the song or anything! As I watched how they went together, I decided that the older washed out colors didn’t fit with the song. I wanted something a bit more modern. The first effect I tried was threshold, but it made some parts really bright with blues and reds, then the rest of the scene was black. It was cool, but too harsh. The next one I tried was Edge Detection. I thought it looked really cool! It was all white with a slight hint of color in the lines and outlined the main parts of the scene. It gave an extra touch to the clip.

I showed this video to my other roommate and she thought the play on words was hilarious. She also suggested that I add title credits to the end just to say the name of the song and the movie the clip was from. I agreed.

I really like how the clip and song coordinate together. The story of the clip is of two dogs who are in love and Tramp (the boy dog) is trying to impress Lady (the girl dog) by presenting her a fancy meal even though he is a dog with no home and just roams the street. The story of the song really plays into this. It’s about how the singer really wants the girl.

Not Reading a Movie

Good Plan

So my intention was to sit down and “read a movie” for this week’s ds106 assignment. I read Roger Ebert’s article on How to Read a Movie, I looked over the chapter on Moving Images in a new book I have called Media Literacy in the K-12 Classroom by Frank W Baker and the I hit the list of TIFF Essential 100 to pick a movie to analyse.

Poor Execution

As I was looking over the list, I came across the film Amelie and thought that might be a good one to “read”. I really enjoyed the movie when I saw it but it was so many years ago that I would have to find it and watch it again before completing this assignment. Instead I started looking at the other visual assignments that I could do and I recalled a mash-up I had seen quite a while back that combined the Toy Story 3 and Inception trailers. I started to wonder if Inception would be a good movie to read – I had also really enjoyed that one when I saw it. Of course, that made me want to try my own mash-up of Amelie and Inception. So, I found the trailers for both, downloaded the sound and video from YouTube with my Firefox add-on and combined them in iMovie.

Fun

I think it worked pretty well! I like the combination of whimsical Amelie and ominous Inception trailers.

This might fit video assignment #463 – Watching Movies with the Stereo On: Like when you have a movie playing on TV without the sound and you’ve got the stereo on at the same time. Take a clip from a movie, remove the audio, and add audio from a song or radio show that, somehow, kind of fits.

I’ll tackle a “proper” video assignment later this week with more original content…

well for this assignment I did Think Like a Man, although i have not seen it yet, it seems very entertaining and i feel that Kanye West song runaway fits this movie well, it was the first that came to mind when i watch the preview because how mean and disrespectful guys acted in the movie. Kanye defenitly comments on how Jerk off and douchebag. I did this project on I movie i am getting better at this. At first I had to download and import the clips to the program then I dragged the music from itunes and was successful one part that I had trouble with was matching the part of the song to movie. because I put them one on top of the other the music was parallel to the clip so I had to drag it under neath the clip so I can edit and cut the song to where I wanted it. Enjoy. Star value: 3 ***
