ds106: Music video (4 stars)

This assignment was partially inspired by a friend of mine who was showing me how to make a visualizer in a program called After effects. Since I had been having trouble with Adobe Animate on my other assignment, I took him up on his offer and thought it’d be fitting to work it into a task.

The song itself was something I made for a small music tournament a few years ago, while the background was made by me in Grafx2 and the visualizer made in After Effects. The song was meant for a grassy and unexplored area, so I wanted not only the background to match but the visualizer as well. I put it at the bottom of the screen and made it a nice green to replicate grass moving in the wind. Besides the other assignment, I’m much more pleased with how this one turned out in comparison. It doesn’t feel polished to me, but considering this was my first try with making a music video with a visualizer I think it went surprisingly well.

It Is All Keira Knightley

“Music video are only the best way to listen to your favorite song because it give you the added visual dimension. Have you ever listen to a song and said ” oh this would be great with such-in-such movie”? Your task is to use video clips, NOT still shots, to create a music video for any song. Be creative!”

Music Video

Maybe this video is obvious. A song about weddings and Fine China put over footage that has fine china and wedding imagery in it, not the hardest connection to make. But for me, this scene and this song are put in the same drawer in my brain. To pull one out is to at least see the other.

Plus I love pirates.

So I found some scenes and cut them up. Mainly I cut out all of the shots of british people in the wedding scene, and then found all of the dress-floating-in-water scenes. All I want to see is Keira Knightley. She’s all I want on screen.

Bit of a rambley fact, I had no idea how I wanted to end it. And I was just looking for the scene where the wedding dress was floating in water and saw that it faded into Keira Knightley’s face. Once I saw the scene following that transition, I was like ‘yes, this is it’. And that was how I decided to end it.

Song/Scene Mashup

For this assignment I had to take a song and trailer and combine them in a way that seemed fluent. I ended up picking a scene from the Walking Dead, keeping with the theme from my previous assignment. The song I selected was Let The Bodies Hit The Floor, by Drowning Pool. In the scene the community becomes over run by zombies and the main characters have to fight their way through the hundreds of zombies. The song fits perfectly with the scene as hundreds of zombie bodies are hitting the floor and I tried cutting it to fit with the scenes actions. I used OpenShot Video editor to edit the scene and song together and I think it turned out very well. I could actually see this song being played over this scene which is basically what this assignment was all about.

Summertimes of Our Lives

Summertimes of Our Lives from Mai Shalalaiwan on Vimeo.

I made a music video for Cody Simpson’s Summertimes of Our Lives by compiling footage from Dear John, The Last Song, Charlie St. Cloud and The Vow. All of the film had a reoccurring love theme which suited the music.

When Birds…ATTACK!!!

For this ds106 activty, the task was to creaete a music video for any song. I decided to use Alfred Hitchcock “The Birds,” movie to display the rebellious behavior of these angry birds as they fight us back. The overall message of this video is to stop animal abuse!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets P!NK

I honestly do not know how to explicitly state how much I enjoyed doing this assignment! At first, it seemed really easy but not that wrong. However, I was really wrong about both!  It involved taking a music video of our choice (I picked Just  Give Me A Reason!) along with a movie, for which I choose Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind! We were suppose to integrate the two but not using still shots, and instead using actual videos from the two. Although this seemed easy at first, it was a lot harder because I had to make sure that whenever it would switch back to the actual music video, the voices were in-sync with the words and it was somewhat chaotic but definitely rewarding! I also learned how to iMovie and really learn how to cut/edit/etc.

Also, the actual music video had clips of P!NK and her beau, which I felt took away from the idea with the movie so I used my new amazing skills to cut and clip it so rather than seeing P!NK, it was Clementine and Joel! For those of you who haven’t seen the movie, it’s about a couple and how  one day they break up, so Clementine(the one with the wacky hair colors!) decides to have Joel erased from her memory with some new surgery. Once Joel finds this out, he decides that he wants to do the same but during it, he decides that he doesn’t actually want to forget about her and he attempts to stop the procedure. Definitely a beautiful movie, which is why I choose the song ‘Just Give Me A Reason’ because all he needed was a reason to believe that it wasn’t over! All in all, doing this as my first assignment was well worth it because it allowed me to learn a lot of the ins and outs of iMovie.

The most frustrating thing in the entire process was uploading it to youtube. When I was finally done pouring my heart and soul into this assignment, Youtube decided to step in and give me this gross page.

BOO YOUTUBE

I guess it was problematic that I was using online clips, and somehow I was stepping on copyright issues. I tried to re-edit my video but then I realized two things, 1) why should have to edit and redo my video? The whole purpose of Youtube is for people to upload videos, and I’m not in any way profiting from this video so what’s the big deal in uploading it? Ugh, it was the most frustrating thing ever! I honestly wanted to pull my hair out. Then I realized 2) that I would much rather use a website that allows to me upload things at my leisure and not stress out over whack-tube. Despite Youtube supposedly being for the people, it’s not! I don’t know to which degree people have to make sure that their videos don’t look like anyone else’s and the more I read on the lengths companies go to make sure you don’t use their copyrighted material, it was ridiculous. Honestly. Don’t get so uptight just because I remixed your video! I even put a disclaimer but no luck. So I happily went to Vimeo instead and decided to bookmark this experience. Anyways, here’s my video, which I OWN NOTHING OF EXCEPT THE ESSENTIAL SWEAT THAT WENT INTO MAKING IT! enjoy :)

There is no middle ground.

As I posted in a previous blog post about Pre-Production, I decided to do the Music Video assignment from the assignment bank.

I was a little overly ambitious on this one. I wanted to complete the entire song, “Seven Devils” by Florence + the Machine, but I found that I didn’t have the clips I wanted and 2 minutes had taken me nearly 3 days.

You can watch the video first and then read about what I did to create this masterpiece below.

SELECT 1080p FOR BEST VIEWING

This assignment was by far the most time consuming of all my assignments for weeks 11 and 12.

I am probably the most indecisive person when it comes to things like this. I had about a minute and a half of this assignment completed with a different song, then suddenly decided I didn’t like it and started from scratch. Of course, this put me behind a few days, but I am happy with the results.

Behind the Scenes

I worked with StreamClip to rip the Game of Thrones dvds. I cut them into a ton of little clips of scenes I knew I wanted to use for my video. I also used YouTube videos of Game of Thrones trailers and previews.

Click here for the list of videos

Then I used Adobe Premiere Pro to put the music and the video clips together.

My first goal when creating this was to make sure the music went with the clips. My second goal was to create a story so even the people who haven’t seen the series could follow along–even if it’s just a little bit. I wanted to show that numerous groups and people were fighting for the throne. I had some emphasis on Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons because they change the game.

I also included a line from Cersei Lannister at the beginning: “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.” I think is one of the most powerful and far-reaching quotes of the series.

This was the one assignment I was looking forward to because I used to do things like this all the time. I don’t really have the time to do it anymore, so it was nice to have to do it for a class.

Hit the road Peter

For this video, I attempted to do a video for the DS106 Video Assignment, “Music Video“. For this video I chose the song, “Hit the road Jack“, and the movie was, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall“. I chose this movie because it was more comedy to me than drama even tho the scenes I used were more of the dramatic line.

So after downloading the audio from YouTube and sourcing the movie, what I did first was to edit the song to just what I wanted using the, “Select” and “Trim” tool in Audacity. Next I listened to the song to hear the different sections and note the time lengths between Ray and Margie.

With this done I then moved to taking my selections from the movie, once again using MPEG Streamclip which is great in that it allows you to “Select” and “Trim” out the section of video you want frame by frame using the keyboard arrow keys.

After making all my scene selections from the movie and saving them to MP4 formats, I was then able to open all my clips in Windows Media Maker once again along with the audio file(song). Next step was to mute the video clips and arrange them in the order I wanted. In Movie Maker you can also further edit your clips if needed by using the “Trim” tool. This was quite similar to my Sports mash-up, except for that video the sound was altered around the video, while in this clip the video was altered around the sound.

I also decided to add some credits and this is pretty simple in WMM. You simply select the credits button at the end and type up your credits. Here you can also adjust the duration time for the text to go with the clip duration. Which is great since I was able to try adding some text to the beginning of the video. Then when you’re through once again, save the entire project if you want then save it to MP4 YouTube format.   Endless Possibilities.

Video Assignment – Music Video

The assignment for the music video I made was about Bruce Lee’s final film appearance in “Enter the Dragon” before his death on July 20, 1973. The music for the video is the soundtrack from the same movie.

Winnie the Pooh Sings “Mad World” (Music Video ****)

Disney proudly presents the deleted scene from the classic movie Pooh’s Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin. It’s depressing and entertaining! It’s depressitaining! In this secret scene, Pooh has sadly given up hope after losing his beloved Christopher Robin and he begins to sing a song entitled “Mad World”, showing that his faith in humanity has deteriorated…..So enjoy this obscure scene straight from the Disney Vault!

I must now confess that I lied and this scene did NOT come from the legendary Disney Vault. It is only a mere fan-made video that was mixed with fitting music. As I said in my weekly post from last week, the inspiration to create such a dramatic depressing video came from the fact that I found Gary Jule’s voice to highly resemble Winnie the Pooh’s voice. If this weren’t the case, I don’t think this video would work as well. Sad song + sad scene + Winnie the Pooh singing = PERFECT!

Just as I planned out from last week, I used Final Cut to create this. First I downloaded Pooh’s lamenting scene from Youtube, then I ripped the audio from the “Mad World” music video and converted it to mp3 format (since I couldn’t find the plain mp3 anywhere.) I started splicing the scene in Final Cut and it matched perfectly with them music, however as I suspected, I came up short because the scene was only a min or so long. I didn’t want to be someone who reuses the same clips over and over because that doesn’t add any variety to the message. So to avoid this problem, I took some scenes from 2 other Winnie the Pooh shows; Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day and Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (grabbed the video just in time! it got taken off Youtube for copyright infringement.)

I used the opening scene of the Honey Tree as the opening scene for the video, panning around Christopher Robin’s room looking at all of his old toys and story books. Inside the book, it shows Christopher Robin swinging, just as the song says “Going nowhere…”. During “The tears are filling up their glasses” lyric, it shows Pooh struggling to hold onto the umbrella in the torrential downpour, while during “no expression…” his ghost self descends back into his sleeping state. This also goes with the fact that he later says “The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had.”

I wanted to change the whole meaning of pooh’s sadness. I wanted the video to have a sense of helplessness and woe. With the slow cross-fades, desaturated colors, slow motion, and near perfect lipsyncing I’m pretty sure I successfully delivered this message! Wow, feeling a sense of joy and accomplishment from Pooh’s sadness? I’m a horrible person!
