The History of the iMac

For this week’s final DS106 video assignment I did, I chose to do the Product Evolution video assignment. I chose to do this assignment because I love Apple and iMac computers and it was relevant to our 1980s retro theme.

Using iMovie, I gathered a bunch of pictures of every model of iMac andput them back to back in a video, set to music with titles, saying every model and the year it came out from Apple.

Evolution of MTV

MTV was a groundbreaking change in the consumption of music. The switch from radio to television was a huge leap for music in general giving meaning to the song “Video killed the radio star” by the Buggles. The first broadcast was on August 1, 1981 and from there they never looked back. An even bigger contribution to music culture was the MTV awards. The first award show was broadcast September 14, 1984. In 2019 the award show ringed in nearly 2 million viewers, which is historically low, but that could be due to what is killing Tv, the internet.

Product Evolution

Things are’t what they use to be. For this assignment pick a product, a piece of technology works best but you can use anything, and create a short video timeline of how it looked way back all the way to how it looks today. Be sure to add dates.

For this 3 and a half star assignment I chose to do a timeline of TV’s. All I had to do was Google images of tv’s and their dates and line them up in a video timeline. I used Windows Movie Maker for this assignment as well.

Then once I imported all the clips and dates into Movie Maker, I imported an audio track to make it more interesting to watch.

Here is the final video:

Camera, Action???

Product Evolution put me just short of 10 stars for week 10 but I think the time I spent to make it half decent warrants that extra 1/2 star. Research of cameras in the motion picture industry took just as long as producing it. Cameras have an extensive history in the movie industry; I could have made this a 20 minute video easily. I chose the most significant periods within its history and attempted to find pics that followed that time period. Once I imported these pics into Movie Maker I then thought of songs that made me think of movies crossing a span of decades. Final touches were added to the video for effect, the end result is featured below.

The Innovation of the Telephone

The Product Evolution Assignment was in interesting on to complete. I decided to go with the evolution of the telephone. Starting from the candle stick to now the iPhone the phone has changed so much. First I completed research to see the types of phone that were being used from the beginning. Then I gathered different images to use. I used windows live movie maker to put the images together and add music. I added some transitions and themes to give the video an cooler look. At the beginning I added the Verizon “Can You Hear Me Now?” and then I used the song ‘”Kiss Me Through The Phone” instrumental for the background music. (2 Stars)

Who doesn’t like video games?

Who remembers spending hours at a time in front of the tv playing your favorite game? Whether you played Super Mario Bros or Zelda, Sonic or War of Witchcraft, we all had different systems we used to play these games.  As we grew up, so did the gaming world.  It seemed like every year we were asking for a new console for Christmas!

I thought it would be fun to show the evolution of the gaming systems for the product evolution assignment.

How many do you remember? How many did you own? What was your favorite game to play and on which console? For me, my favorite was playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64, and then I loved this Luigi’s Haunted Mansion game for the Gamecube.

Enjoy the video and don’t forget to comment your favorites!

To start this assignment I found all the pictures on this website, and then saved certain ones to my computer to use.  For the background music, I wanted to choose something very popular so I decided on the Super Mario Bros. theme song.  After locating this on youtube, I downloaded it using http://en.savefrom.net/.

I wanted to put this on Audacity so I had to convert it to a WAV file using an online converter.

Now that I had all of my things downloaded, I used Windows Live Movie Maker and uploaded all my pictures in chronological order and used the caption button to add text to each slide and made each slide 2 seconds long.  Once I seen how long the video was going to be, I went to Audacity and uploaded the mario song.

Since the video was only 52 seconds long, I trimmed the audio to be exactly 52 seconds and faded the ending.

After I saved this, I went back to Movie Maker and uploaded the song.

Then I saved it and uploaded it to Youtube.

Changes

I decided to pick telephones as my product. The reason I chose telephones is because everyone is familiar with what they look like today, but many may not know what they looked like as they were transitioning.

I decided to pick telephones as my product. The reason I chose telephones is because everyone is familiar with what they look like today, but many may not know what they looked like as they were transitioning. There are some pretty goofy looking phones from back in the day that you can see here in my video. I used Windows Movie Maker for this one. I found my pictures on the internet and made a slideshow timeline of them. I added the song “Changes”, by David Bowie.

Stop Telephoning Me-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e…e.

Another assignment option was to show the evolution of a product; I chose the telephone.  I feel like telephones are something that have been around for a very long time, but are constantly changing (much like computers, which telephones basically are now).  Cell phones now that are considered archaic (flip phones?) were super cutting edge when I was in middle and high school.  So that’s where I got the idea for the product to use. The song was just common sense.

I also showed the evolution of the product in terms of social impacts – people are so attached to their phones now that it is common to see people on dates or hanging out in public and every person involved is glued to their own phones and not even interacting with each other.  So my video shows the progression from the earlier phones to that issue.

Evolution and Natural Selection

At my house we are currently in the middle of a move, so this means going through all the millions of boxes of your family’s stuff and deciding what stays and what goes. While rummaging through these boxes I came across my sisters old cell phone… a brick of a phone if I ever saw one and it made me think about how this thing come to be the slim things we have today. Thus we have Product Evolution, an assignment where you make a YouTube video showing the progression of technology through the ages.

There where already these types of videos  out there, and plenty on computers and cell phones.  So I had to think of something different, I’m a math major so a calculator is a daily companion to most everywhere I go so why not Calculators through history? Now I made a  tutorial on how to make one such video already so this is mostly on inspiration and implementation. It’s hard to get much story out of this type of video but it was interesting enough to see how calculators started as these hulking devices and ended as something which can fit into your hand. My favorite was probably the Curta, 1948 as the size difference between the ones before it was so fast it was amazing to see this one pop up. Though I’m sure the picture I was able to find is not of one from 1948 they were able to fit into your palm like a manual counter.

I really liked how the transitions had this sense of fighting and tension between each picture, like the next one pushed the previous one out of the way so it could shine. The music was mostly chosen just cause of the math reverences but it was humorous that the line “we made our own computer” came up just as the “Comptometer” was shown. Happened completely by accident but I’ll take it.
