Road Trip Mems

Original DS 106 Assignment: Two Image Graphic Spread (3 stars)

Avery is beginning her 15 hours trek from Marfa, Texas to Sofi Stadium in California. She’s not sure how long it’ll really take or how much gas she’s going to spend, but it needs to be worth it. She was finally able to get a weekend off from the restaurant (first time in 2 years) and she is anxious actually leaving it in the hands of everyone else. The best thing she can do right now is enjoying her and everything that is yet to come. But first, pictures! Avery was gifted a polaroid camera last Christmas and is excited to use it for the first time and document her journey.

Avery’s Road Trip to the Finale

Step 1: Choose your photo editor of choice. The best and easiest one I have been able to access is Canva. Canva allows you to pick from multiple pre-made templates as well as starting from a blank one.

Step 2: In the search bar type what template you are looking for. Given Avery is early 20’s, she is still heavily on social media, so I looked for an Instagram template that would be aesthetic.

Step 3: Insert photos. Here we are following the guidelines and inserting two photos of Avery during her road trip. One at the Arizona border and the other at New Mexico. These are supposed to look like polaroid pictures, since the vintage polaroid are making a comeback.

Step 4: Export and share! Canva allows you to automatically share to social medias or share to your computer to upload to a blog like this one. Canva has a history of all your projects as well so it is good to go back to templates you like.

Oh no! Now, what?

Original DS 106 Assignment: Design to Shock (4 stars)

This is after Avery’s audition. She just auditioned with her favorite song She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5. This is the song she would listen as she got ready in the morning for school and whenever she studied or cleaned. This is a song she could play and sing-a-long with her mom and for 4 minutes and 27 seconds all her worries went away. This assignment fits perfect for displaying the climax of the story.

Step 1: Find the photos you want to merge. For this I want to make a panel of what happens to Avery at this point after her audition. She’s center stage and this is the audition to have her break into show business. I started with getting a photo of Avery and a photo of an unknown singing show stage to start. I also got a photo of world-renowned judge Mrs. Potato-Head to be the one delivering the news.
Step 2: Go to canva.com. For the length that I wanted this to be, I wanted it to resemble the page of a manga book, so I decided to search for a blank infographic template that I know would give me that length.

Step 3: Begin building your panels. I use the Elements feature on the left hand side to find shapes such as rectangles, squares and lines to divide up the page.

Step 4: Insert images! This is where creativity is key. I want the panels to feel like scenes from a live audition singing show or pages of a book portraying the same. Here I use multiple forms of editing, cropping, adding texts, and more. This is where you build the story.

Step 5: Export! Mine had some moving parts so I downloaded it as an MP4 video, but if yours does not or you don’t want it to, you can download it as a PNG or JPG. It also gives an option to save as a GIF if your specific.

Love: Not Enough Frames

Original DS 106 Assignment: Love: In Three Frames

Our love in three photos. This was the “try a random one” assignment I got, which perfectly fulfilled my need for 10 total stars. I took pictures of my long-time boyfriend, Andy, and realized I was able to get one from every other year. We are going to get married soon and I though this was such a cute thing to be able to make in light of all the stressful planning! Andy and I met through friends and immediately clicked… I liked to talk and he liked to listen. 5 years later, we have a kitten, have lived in two apartments, have gone on countless trips to many states, traveled internationally for the first time and going through college! Among all else, Andy and I are best friends. We don’t have to sugarcoat things to prevent the other from getting upset. We like watching reality shows, going to the beach, and working to save for the future we both want. *cries*

Step 1: Open canva.com
Step 2: Download all photos you want to use and have them on standby in Flickr, Google Photos, or even your desktop.
Step 3: On Canva, click “Create Design” and scroll down to select “Instagram Post”
Step 4: Under templates, search “Photo frames” and select one that has space for three photos.

Step 5: Import photos into template and hover over the frame you want them to go into.
Step 6: Edit the text to say something endearing or funny! Click on “Elements” on the left hand side to add any stickers as you see fit.
Step 7: Click “Share” and scroll to “Download” and select the format that you want this download, or shared to your social media.

Not Really A Bad Photo

Original DS106 Assignment: Pick A Bad Photo, Apply A Vintage Effect And Write Something In Helvetica (2 stars)

For this bad photo, I used an old photo I had that is funny, but had no real use because it is bad quality. I took the photo, added a filter that Canva provided, and used Helvetica*-ish font provided to make it into something useful. Now this can be used as an advertisement or when teaching kids about crossing the street.

Safety Photo for Crossing Guard Training

Step 1: Open Canva on canva.com
Step 2: Click on “Create A Design” and scroll down to “Instagram Post”

Instagram post format is best for this type of content to get shared across multiple platforms.

Step 3: Upload photo you want to edit. Photos can be uploaded from Flickr, Google Photos, Instagram, etc.
*Intermission music while you find the photo you want to use*
Step 4: Click on the image, on the left hand side there is Edit Image, and click on filters. Apply the filter you want.
Step 5: Click on text on the left hand side, add the text you want in Helvetica font.

Step 6: Click Share on the top right hand side, and save the image in the format you want or share it to your social medias.

Another City Graphic Poster

Original DS 106 Assignment: City Graphic Poster (3 stars)

I love scenery photo so this seemed like a no brainer to do. I had this photo of National Harbor skyline I took when driving one day, yes I did drive around with no destination, but with recent gas prices, I refuse. 0 people have completed the assignment so there was nothing to follow, maybe I will upload a tutorial of my own when I figure out how to do that!

How most people feel about gas prices right now.

With my major being in Communications and Digital Studies, being able to transfer photos into posters and advertisements is something I need to be able to do quickly, this is where a majority of the job market is. Ok, well not majority, but for entry level positions the grunt work may be producing multiples of these everyday. I am hopefully going to be using some of my work from this class and creating a portfolio to present with job opportunities.

Step 1: Open Canva at canva.com
Step 2: Select “Create Design” and scroll down to “Poster” or the desired size.
Step 3: Select the photos you want to use and edit for the graphic poster. Adjust the photo to fill the poster as much as needed and crop.

Step 4: Add any gradience, stickers, or add any filters with the tabs on the left hand side.
Step 5: Add text! This can be promotional, something basic like the city, state or town.

Step 6: Add any more fixings! This can be great for town events, fundraiser, or upkeeping town morale. This can be taken far more beyond just adding a town name, and is multiuse.
Step 7: Click “Share” and select how you want to save your media or share it towards any social medias!

Draw It! EASY

Original DS106 Assingment: Draw It! (2 stars)

I cycled through some tutorials by other classmates, as well as looking at other classmates posts finding what to do. Hopefully I did not get any viruses from clicking on so many links, but I did find one that got it done quickly! I screen recorded probably one of the EASIEST tutorials to follow to get an assignment done (at the end of this page). I have been wanting to get a photo of Muffin as a drawing, but finding people who do drawings of animals is harder to find in this area, so this will probably be an alternative I will do! Also for family photos, memoirs, military, etc this would be a great way to add some more sentiment.

Step 1: Go to dumpr.net (opens as picjoke.org)
Step 2: In the search bar for the photo effects, type “sketch” since we are trying to make a photo look like a drawing.

Step 3: Select the photo effect/frame you want to use to convert your image.
Step 4: Upload your image and lets the processor do its work!

Since this is a free site there are MANY ads, try to avoid click any.

Step 5: You can save your image to your computer or use the link to share it or post on Facebook.

Reflection of Visual Storytelling

This week we worked a lot with Visual Storytelling. We worked a good amount on different media Platforms. For example, other blog posts, Twitter, Flickr, WordPress, Visual Assignments and for me I used a good amount of Canva. Learned new things … Good Frustrated a bit but was also overwhelmed with the good.

For me as I stated it was a very interesting all of the place experience. I really enjoyed taking photos but got frustrated that I only had 15 minutes so I couldn’t make the photos as perfect as I wanted too. If given the option I would have rathered traveling all over to take the photos. I really did enjoy making the daily creates because they were fun but got your mind thinking a good amount. The Visual Assignments I also really liked because I already had many photos that fit the topics and just paired them together or got help from family in making them. For most I use a website called canva to make the collages and add fun text and speech bubbles. Some of the challenges I faced along with not being able to make the pictures perfect was creativity. I was overthinking what I wanted to do for each thing to the point I had to step back relax and just get to work. Everything turned out so great and exactly how I wanted them to.

My weaknesses with Visual Storytelling was making it creative and original. Like I stated before I overthink everything and really wonder if it is good enough when I should just be confident in myself and know what I am doing IS in fact good enough! Changing this is necessary because it affects me in other places not just with Visual Storytelling but in life as well. One of my strengths is knowing how to work a camera and having a love for taking photos which made Visual Storytelling so much easier!

Overall my experience with Visual Storytelling was very fun and I am so happy I was able to do it. I learned how to use Canva more and how to make daily creates and learned more about making a create blog!

RELAXATION 1.5 STARS

Here are some of my favorite places to relax and chill. Top left is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco. This spot was so beautiful and I took this with my camera and edited it with a filter. The top left is Alcatraz. May is not a relaxing place for some but it was the best trip EVER. I love learning about history so that was ALL FOR ME. The Picture with the Sunset is one of my all-time favorites. It’s just so calming to be on an airplane excited to go somewhere and look out your window and see something like this. The last photo again is one of my top 5 photos I have taken and it was on a beach in San Fran. It was just me and my Aunt and that day were just so marvelous.

Me, Myself, and I. 3 STARS.

Here is my panorama of me myself and I. My idea for this was to show how sometimes I have different moods towards myself. The mean side, the shy one, and the nice one. ?

“Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba”.3.5 STARS

This is one of my favorite movie scenes ever. This one of my favorite movies as a kid so of course had to do this one!
