Let’s Play “What Movie is This?”

Well, I think I am good with copyright issues here as all images are pretty photoshopped to death. I preferred the other assignment I did, and made up, I think, where I used five still images from film. And While we are wondering what movie this is, it is important to note it was a screenplay first, and a book too. See Colin Higgins.

Like the DailyShoot, these short adventures into art are good for me. A little time to think and reflect about important parts of the world, some ideas, to wonder a bit on a Monday morning.

A nice tip for folks is that you don’t have to draw icons from scratch (although that’s great too). There are types of fonts called “Dingbat” fonts that you can download (Your computer probably has a few generic ones like Wingdings in your font list already). Check out http://www.dafont.com which is a great resource for fonts and they have a whole section of Dingbat fonts.

Love Story (of sorts)

This all started with today’s assignment for the Daily Shoot:

“Power plugs are ubiquitous. Can you make a creative photo of such a common thing?  #ds448″

It took me pretty much all day to figure out what I wanted to take a photo of because power plugs are so ordinary, I couldn’t think of any idea that wouldn’t look really trite. However, after looking a few photos that were already up I got an idea:

What if I took a photo of an Australian Plug trying to fit into an American outlet? American outlets always look so sad, so if I took a photo of something that couldn’t fit in the outlet, it would be even more sad.

Luckily I was at home for the Superbowl and was able to find my phone and charger that I used when I was studying abroad in Australia last year (funny note: my phone which has been off since mid-July still has a 1/2 battery life!)

I took a lot of photos of putting the Aussie plug into the American outlet, but this is the photo I liked the best.

Irreconcilable Differences

Then I was trying to think of something cool I could do with all the photos that I had left over from the shoot since some of them were kind of cool. Originally I was just going to do a complied screen shot, but then I noticed that all the image titles were numbers like: 2156.

I decided it would be funny if I made a song playlist poem for the photos, similar to what Colleen has done.

The poem turned out a tad more weird/creepy(?) than I thought it would be, but it was fun to have a different twist on the assignment!

Here is my masterpiece in all it’s glory (also check it out on my flickr gallery if you want)

Written In Tunes

I just finished clearing out my RSS feed, left a few comments, and feel a general sense of “being caught up.” Not quite sure what to do next, I decided to quickly try out a random assignment from #ds106. It looks like this:

Write a sentence (preferably somewhat coherent, yet on the nonsensical side), a poem, or a quick story using the titles of songs you have in your Windows Media Player (iTunes may possibly work as well). Print the screen. Paste it in Microsoft Paint (or some higher-end equivalent). Save it, upload it, and share. If you could even respond to the one I originally created as a challenge (possibly even embed it as a comment on that blog entry), that would be even cooler.

This was a fun little reminder that there are stories and poems everywhere we look. We just have to look. Looking forward to trying this with some classes soon, but in the meantime what is this story about to you? I tried to deal with plot, character, setting etc…Maybe after reading your comments. I can turn it into a short story or a chapter in my memoir.

The Four Icon Challenge

I had a lot of fun doing this assignment. I discovered that deep digging we can find, almost every time ,elements that can reduce the movie to a few anchors.

Here is mine . How I did it? I picked some elements in google image, put them in Fireworks , stripped the objects I wanted with the magic wand tool to extract the essence . For the elevator scene i distorted the rectangles and put some stick men inside . Then, obviously, I kicked them to a new white canvas.

Four Icon Challenge

I’ll be doing a number of the visual/design submitted assignments for ds106 in preparation for my talk with Martin Weller this coming week for our online film club bavathursdays. I’m working up to a 80s movie theme here, and I will be covering it from one too many angles in the coming posts—I apologize in advance for the onslaught of bad 80s movie visuals.

So, inspired by Tom, Megan, Alan, Lisa, and D’Arcy here is my attempt at the very fun four icon challenge assignment (thank you Timmmmyboy), keep in mind all my images were found through google search. I took the easy road with found art.

Happy pup- as am I cause a decent refund is coming my way!

Four icon movie

Inspired by Alan Levine’s 2001 icons and in response to Tim Owen’s Four Icon Challenge, I put this together. I’m even more shy of drawing than Alan, so I did it with clipart, and unlike Tim I considered it more of a guessing game, so I didn’t put the title.

Playlist: Just Herb Alpert and Abbey Road

For this assignment I limited my choices to the great Herb Alpert and the Beatles classic  album Abbey Road. I cheated a bit and added an underscore to separate title. So sue me.

Random Assignment for DS106 – Playlist Story

As I was scanning through the DS106 RSS feed reading posts and listening to lots of content, I came across an assignment that had to do with writing a story using your music playlist. I couldn’t find the “official” assignment anywhere on the ds106.us website. I’m still trying to figure it all out. Anyway, this assignment was a bit less academic than the one I was currently working on (reading and reflecting), so I thought I’d give it a whirl. It looks like someone named Colleen created her own assignment. The jist of it is:

Using Windows Media Player*, construct a playlist of songs (using song titles only) that can go together to form a sentence, a poem, a new song, etc. When you are done, print your screen, paste it in paint and upload it to your blog, flickr, etc., tagging it.

By passing the Windows Media Player for iTunes (does anyone use WMP anymore?), I got started making my story. Interestingly enough my story ended up being quite a depressing love story. I recall someone else making a similar comment on his on music playlist story. I guess writing poetry is easier if there is a sad story in it.
