10-Step Photo Challenge

The 10-Step Photo Challenge is a visual assignment worth 3 stars.  It included taking 10 steps in one direction and taking a picture with each step (obviously the pictures had to be different).  I chose this assignment because it seemed like a fun thing to do because there aren’t many new things to see by taking just 10 steps but obviously from these pictures, there’s multiple angles and different ways to see things making so much more to look at. Here is the collage of my 10 steps!

10 Step Photo Challenge

I took the ten steps in my backyard, coming right out from my back door.  There’s not really anything interesting in my back yard but there’s more things to look at back there than there is in my front yard!  I like assignments that make you look at perspective like this one did.  I don’t think anyone would’ve guessed I only took 10 steps and gathered these pictures if they didn’t know what the assignment was.  It’s pretty cool to see how much of a difference perspective and what not can make to a simple collage of pictures.

Ten Step Photo Challenge

Ten Steps

I chose to complete the 10-Step Photo Challenge by taking ten steps out of my door and into my backyard – taking one picture with every step.  I tried to add variety to the pictures by altering my angles and proximity and then used a collage creator app on my phone to compile the photos.

10 Step Challenge – visual assignment 2 – Loch Ard

10 steps visual challenge - Loch Ard collage

Beautiful day yesterday and walked locally at Loch Ard in the Trossachs just north of Glasgow with my daughter and her young dog. It’s such a beautiful place that I knew I would be able to fulfil this challenge of taking 10 steps in any direction and taking a photograph.

To compile the collage I actually used PowerPoint which handles images very easily in terms of cropping, resizing and moving, then grabbed an image of the slide with “grabber” and saved in the smallest file format I could find – png.

Here’s the route we took - http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochlomond/kinlochard.shtml

10 Steps

I was out in Long Island today and decided it was a good time to do the 10 step assignment. The location was a vast garden and I got a chance to walk around the entire garden taking pictures. I took 10 steps in various directions and took a picture every time I stopped and this was the result.

Riffing 10 Steps into 20 Miles

I was in Centralia, IL all day today (5/22), which is about 5 hours from where I live. Somewhere in between hour 1 and boredtodeathville, I was trying to think up something I could do for ds106 while I was driving. My mind flashed back to an assignment in which you take a photo every step for 10 steps, and then create a collage.

I’ve wanted to do that one following those rules in my back yard, but it seemed like a good place to start. So, I decided to take a photo every mile for 20 miles. What I got is shown below (click the thumbnail for the full-size image to see details, all 4000px worth).

The hardest part for me was convincing myself to only take one picture. I wanted to maintain the heart of grabbing a raw image and then sharing the flow of time, space, and imagery. And that included the blurry photo. I had to almost tell myself out loud not to take a “better” picture.

I have another plan for this image series, but that will have to come another time.

As always, the GIMP .xcf file is available for remixes.

10-Step Challenge

For one of the assignments that I submitted for the assignment bank was the 10-Step Photo Challenge.

I saw this on a site once and thought it was a great idea for an assignment.

The task:  Take ten steps in any direction and with each step take one photo. Think about angles and lighting to create interesting photographs. Don’t forget the Rule of Thirds! Create a collage in a photo editor.

This is my product:

10-Step Challenge

I went to Monroe Hall and stood on the steps. From there, I took ten steps and with each step I took a photo at a different angle.

My goal was not to create 10 distinct photos but to create a vision of what I see when I step out on those steps every Tuesday/Thursday. I’m feeling sentimental…

I hope students enjoy this assignment like I did!
