Same Old, Same Old

Out of all the visual assignments, this one had to be one of my favorites. I had an excuse to go back into my family’s vault of pictures and look through memories from when I was a child. I had not done this in years and instead of just finding a simple photo from the past, my family and I spent hours just laughing and looking at old photos that brought up the best memories. I used these photos as coincidentally, I managed to take this photo last weekend after visiting a family friend who’s neighbor owns goats.

When I found this photo of when I was a child, I thought it would be great to use these photos to show how much I’ve grown, but at the same time that I still wear that cheesy smile on my face and am just as goofy as I was when I was a child.

A picture of me at 5 years old, vs 20 years old.

I had some technical difficulties while trying to upload both photos, so I decided to post on Instagram to resolve the issue. Now, my classmates can also check out my assignment on that platform as well.

~ flashback friday ~

This is my girlfriend Lindsay and she’s always thinking about or drinking  juice or coffee ?

For this assignment we were asked to recreate a past version of someone or ourselves. I used Lindsay as my someone for this and luckily have a whole album of pictures of her drinking different things like Capri Suns (pictured above), iced coffee, thai tea, and iced tea. I already wanted to combine those photos so I did so with Photoshop.

Some things never change.. besides her having glasses. ?

Easter 2004

For this visual assignment I had to find a picture of myself from the past and recreate the photo while holding the old picture. I looked through all of my old photos and found this one of me from Easter in 2004 holding up Easter eggs that I found. I thought the pose was interesting and decided to use the picture. I ended up with the following image:

Recreate the Past

I ended up loving it so much that I sent the picture to my mom and she loves it too. She said she was going to print it out and frame it in our house. Who knows if she actually will or not but I enjoyed looking through my pictures of myself as a child and will probably do this again with my younger brother for my parent’s birthdays and anniversaries and any other holidays that come along.

Then and Now Reenactment!

Redoing The Past Pose

Description of Assignment: “So we cannot go back in time…. But can you recreate a pose of someone’s old photograph with them doing the same pose in the present? Make a photograph of someone holding their own old photo and trying to replicate the expression.”

Silly

For this Visual Assignment you were supposed to hold or have someone hold an old picture of themselves and reenact it. I could not find the picture I wanted to do printed out but I had it on the computer. What I did was take the old photo of me and reenact it and then used the app called “Photo Editor” to put them side by side so you can see the comparison of then and now. I used my phone to capture the now photo and set it on a self-timing setting so that I could do the pose.

I chose to do this Visual Assignment because I knew I had this picture of me and I thought it would be funny to reenact. I get made fun of so much for this picture even though people say it is cute as well. I thought it would be funny to reenact this picture and make a then and now picture of it to share with others. I hope that everyone gets as much of a kick out of it that my friends get. This picture means a lot to me because it reminds me of all the crazy fun times I had while playing soccer on my travel team.

This is related to the concept of digital storytelling because it s digital photos that tell a story of a pose that I use to do quite often back when I was younger. By reenacting that photo I was able to create a digital story of what was happening in that photo and how it would look if I were to do that same pose now.

A few things have changed…

So I decided to do the ” Redoing a past pose” assignment.  I thought it would be easier that it was.  I looked through a bunch of old photos, and when I finally found one I was comfortable with remaking (I didn’t wear a lot of clothes as a child apparently) I took a quick snapshot of it.  I only look a little different, right?

I didn’t use any kind of photos hoping or editing for this assignment, this is just a straight up pic of me holding a pic of me.  Kind of a John-ception if you will.  Until next time ds106….

Redoing The Past Pose

I decided to recapture a moment when my son was three years old.  This was the best age for me.  He was so comical and smart.  Most of his pictures back then showed him having fun and laughing.  I thought it would be interesting to see how he looked at three compared to seventeen.  He tried to capture the facial expression along with the spoon in his hand.

Redoing the Past Pose – DS106 Visual Assignment

For my third and final DS106 assignment, I chose to redo a past photo.

The assignment specifically asked for a person to hold a past picture of themselves, but I really wanted to recreate a picture of my parents from 1974 holding their dog, Gretch, and their cat, Leonardo. These pets are, of course, long since passed on, but we used my parents cat now, Loco, and my dog, June.  I showed them the picture and asked that they dress similarly to the clothes they were wearing in the picture. They also studied their facial expressions and body language prior to taking the new photo.

When I was done editing, I showed the two photos side by side to my parents and after studying it for a minute, my dad said, “In hindsight, we should have worked on the lighting and made June turn 90 degrees, but I think you made your point, Lindsey.” To which Mom responded, “What was the point? That people get older and fatter?”

Redoing the Past Pose

Maybe my favorite image of my Mom was one I made on her last visit to my home in Arizona. She knew, and obliged in retelling, the stories of her past. I remember asking her about her high school years, because to me, in her photo, she looked so much more mature than high school. I had the idea to ask her to try and recreate the expression in that photo, which I merged in PhotoSHop:

Sometime later, it got me thinking of the Dear Photograph site (check it out), and that it was actually more interesting to have in the photo the tangible real original photo. I got the idea to do it in 2011 when my sisters and I had to clean Mom;s house out, and I ended up getting photos of my sisters holding their own photos:

My older sister Judy, holds her high school portrait. The expression is there, contemplative and looking into the future, then with her long hair, but still with her tanned skin.

My younger sister Harriet (older than me, ha ha), again not too much trouble to connect the expressions, she more of a trickster, always finding a way to beat her kid brother in some game.

I am sure this is not an original idea, but seemed worthy of making a ds106 Visual assignment (which the Headless folks get next week, stay focused on this week’s audio assignments!), Redoing the Past Post:

So we cannot go back in time…. but can you recreate a pose of someone’s old photograph with them doing the same pose in the present? Make a photograph of someone holding their own old photo, with them trying to replicate the expression.

Try to recapture the then and now story of that moment in time.

I do not know what it is, but it seems kind of magical to see if you can get a person to try on that same pose/expression. You might have to coach them, or advise them “tile your head” “more smile” since they cannot see the photo directly.

I also had done this with my Mom’s sisters:

Aunt Ruth is mom’s older sister, now 93, but still easy to laugh. I tried to get her to tell some stories of the time on her photo, when she was a nurse in World War II. It was a big deal, I recall, since Ruth was the only one of the siblings to get a post high school education. I believe she served her time at a base in Florida. That’s mostly just a fragment of s story.

My Mom’s younger sister Dorothy is trying to emulate the same laugh of a photo of her on a bicycle with my Mom in the alley behind their ?? Garrison Avenue home in Baltimore, probably 70 some years ago. Aunt Dorothy has an infectious laugh, and in many ways reminds me so much of my Mom with similar mannerisms.

Anyhow, this seems like a nifty assignment, and maybe one way would be to redo a photo of myself… but I like the idea of holding the real photo in your hands.

To be continued…
