Story Map (4 points)
I guess a fun fact about myself I have yet to share is that I love travel. I was a part of an exchange program to Dortmund, Germany when I was in high school and I studied abroad during the summer of 2014. So naturally when I saw this visual assignment I had to do it. I chose to tell the story of a trip when I made during Winter Break my Freshman year at UMW. I chose to tell the story of this trip, because it was a big moment for me as it was the first (and only) time I have ever traveled by myself, hence the name “First Time Flying Solo”.
I chose to create slides documenting my favorite moments from the trip where I stayed with my German exchange student from high school. Finding pictures for some parts of the trip was a bit more challenging than I had anticipated because I didn’t have any pictures from parts of the trip (I guess I was enjoying myself). It was also a bit of a struggle trying to figure out how to embed this visual assignment into this post. Thankfully, my roommate was actually the person who created this assignment last semester, so she was able to show me how to get the link to work properly. Overall, I really enjoyed doing this assignment and getting nostalgic about my trip.
dream of one day answering Ireland’s Call.
Doing the four-star visual assignment in which I created an interactive map of either an adventure I have taken or would love to take in my lifetime was one of my favorites thus far. I have always dreamed of going to Ireland ever since my dad and I started mutually developing a strange and random yet absolutely awesome love for Celtic music and Irish folk tunes. Though we never quite made it there together, I still fully intend on going one day with him still somehow and surely being on the journey with me nonetheless. I am so determined on going that this is not the first time I have thought about or wrote about the things I would do while there … I actually wrote a piece for my Travel Writing freshman seminar that mapped out my journey on paper! So going back to that assignment helped me create my interactive map on Knightlab and already have in mind images to use. The images from my imagined adventure briefly capture my imagined adventure that words cannot quite describe are as seen below. Should I ever go, I will be sure to keep you “posted” via this blog (… #punny :D)!
Assignment: Using Knightlab’s Story Map, create a map telling a story of a trip you took or would like to take. Include pictures. They can be your own, or from flickr (just give them credit). (4 stars).
For my third assignment this week, I chose to do the Story Map assignment. The Knightlab website made it really easy, you just create a title and description for each slide, search where it was on the map, add a picture, and then add a new slide until the story is over! I chose to do my Study Abroad Travel story because it’s the most traveling I’ve ever done, and I don’t have any major trips planned yet, so it was my best option! It was fun to go through the places I went and remember what it was like to be there, since I was there this time last year. I did get a big nostalgic, but afterwards I remembered how happy I was once I was finally back home and could eat home cooked meals. Such a luxury! Enjoy the story!
I apologize for the poor quality of the embedded map. Because of the width of my blog, it’s not showing up in true form, and I’m not knowledgable enough to try and fix it. Click here to be taken to a full page of my map if the way it is on here bugs you!
So 4 stars down! As part of our visual week, I was going through the Visual Assignment Bank and the Story Map really caught my eye. I I was quickly running through different trips that I took that would fit perfectly into this, and I couldn’t stop thinking about my trip to London back in January of this year. I went with my grandparents for a week. We went all over the city and even made it to Greenwich to visit the Prime Meridian. I was trying to piece together where we went and when/what day we went. I think I got it pretty well. A favorite part of this trip, I was able to take my dad’s Canon Rebel camera with me. I really like take photographs and I think this trip really help me develop in those skills. So as I was looking back at the different photos to include in the story map, I could see how much fun the trip really was and the memories that we made! So after I finished putting together the different pictures, I went to add the map to the blog. However I ran into a snag. The code that’s given when you go to share the map doesn’t show up in the wordpress format. So my immediate thought was to jump to twitter and ask Jim Groom if he know how to help. Luckily I wasn’t the only person who was having this sort of trouble. John Meadows a fellow ds106er was doing his story map about his honeymoon. A few minutes after I tweeted Groom about the problem I was having he tweeted the same thing! So we went back and forth replying to each other’s tweets and we got to this conclusion:
Down here is where the map should go (if it ever loads)! I will check back here once I do some more troubleshooting on how to get the map itself to load. But you can find the map over here on the Knightlab Timeline website! I really enjoyed making this assignment, it brought back a lot of memories from this awesome trip to London! Enjoy!
What’s up ds106? Hope everyone’s week has been going well so far. For my Story Map assignment, I though I would use some pics from my honeymoon in Aruba last year. Hands down the BEST TRIP EVER, largely because of who I went with, but also because it was a beautiful island and everything went perfectly! To do this assignment, I used the KnightLab Story Map app. The actual creation was very straightforward, as the app pretty much walks you through the process. I really enjoyed making this, and have some other ideas about smaller trips with less pics (I have 300+ pics from my Aruba trip, so making a full slideshow will be pretty difficult) that I can make in the future.

Hope everyone has a fantastic end to the week! Later ds106 community!

So my first assignment I completed this week was the Story Map. This assignment was 4 stars. Only 4 more to go! I thought this assignment was fairly easy! It was time consuming though. Very time consuming. I didn’t mind that it took a few hours to complete. I had so much fun working on […]
