Dewey Dog watching a CU Basketball game

I came across a picture my dog just staring at the carpet next to his bowl of food. I thought it would be fun to think of him watching something with his food by his side. So why not add a small scaled picture of a basketball game.

This iis a pic of bread from the 54th street Bar and grill. Yuck right.

Combophoto (Visual)

For this assignment, I had to use the assignment bank to create peices of visual work thats added up to an 8 star rating. My first is this project:

Untitled-1

Although all the examples I saw looked very professionally done and don’t get me wrong looked amazingly good at how creative they were. I thought it was be good to do something a bit different and a little funnier. So this is my attempt at combophoto.

I used several images to make one whole one of a person.

8/8 Stars completed!

Challenge: Use photo editing software of your choice to splice pairs of pictures into single images. Play with scale in delightful ways. See artist Stephen McMennamy’s great collection.

I became a little bit of a perfectionist about this challenge. My first attempt was based on wanting to make a statement. I thought about creating a visual representation of actions and consequences. I decided to search for images of guns that I could then pair with something representing the opposite or a reaction. After trying a couple of combinations, including guns and doves, I settled on a child’s arm being bandaged and a sand colored gun. When I spliced the image the coloring was slightly off, so using paint, I color selected and “painted” pixels crossing each other.

Once I was complete, I was happy with the image, but not how well it matched the assignment. By blending the images, I lost the artistic style of the clean cut splice.

I decided to try again. This time I attempting finding a solid color background, but this proved the most difficult to find a perfectly matching color like pink or green in two separate images. I figured black would be by best bet and choose an image of strawberries. At this point, I realized I could use the “see similar images” in google to potentially find a picture with the same color background and object. This worked and I selected a flowing sheet if red. When I spliced these images, I was unhappy with the result for two reasons – the water visible in the strawberry image ruined the continuity of the background and the image didn’t play with scale at all.

For my last attempt, I returned to an idea I had tried at the beginning of the challenge with a women and pill. During that effort I was using photos with pink backgrounds and just couldn’t get it right. For this try, I googled “pill” and found an image with a white neutral background. I then googled “yellow man” – and found the hazmat man. Using Word, I rotated, spliced, and scaled the images together.

I am very happy with the result (minus the watermark). I was able to create a piece that made a statement, played with scale, and stayed try to the artistic styling of the inspiration.

Rare Form

Last week you guys met Kaleidoscope, the young superhero with color manipulation abilities. After witnessing her father’s local Hawaiian shop getting robbed, Kaleidoscope knew she needed to use her powers to step up even if her parents insisted that she stay as far away from trouble as possible. On the night of her middle school dance, Kaleidoscope rounded up her two best friends Marlene and Violet to help her. They told their parents they were on the way to the dance but instead ended up downtown at a costume store. Kaleidoscope knew that she needed a disguise since the tall man who robbed the store had seen her face. The girls immediately went for the animal masks. This was their new identity.

When making this combo-photo picture, I combined four different images. I chose to make it black and white to show how Kaleidoscope isn’t always colorful. She can make the world void of color as well.

Background about this assignment:

For this assignment you’re asked to combine two photos to create one. I am familiar with Stephen McMennamy’s work  from taking digital art in the past. I felt that I would really enjoy doing this assignment because they’re really cool pics and I’ve always wanted to make one! I used Photoshop because I’ve become very familiar with Adobe products. I think the hardest part was figuring out what two things to combine. At first I wanted sprinkles involved but that didn’t work out so the next best thing was ice cream! If I could change anything about it, I would make the background of the top half gray like the bottom half… heck, maybe I will when I get some time. I’ll keep you updated :p

Mixin’ It Up

Throughout the years, I’ve noticed I have a pretty easy time staying engaged in the creative process when it comes to visual art. I think this contributes to my interest in experimenting with digital tools so much. Naturally, my first choice from the assignment bank was a visual assignment.

I have a great appreciation for collage art. I love seeing elements from completely different images come together to form something extraordinary; something that makes you think, “what if?” I’ve wanted to make more of a habit to create my own, I just struggle with setting aside the time to do it. (Again, this is why I’m so grateful to be in this class… I’m forced to make the time.)

Combophoto was the perfect assignment to warm myself up to this course. Inspired by other examples of collage art (see @rezanfajar), I decided to combine a floral illustration with a human eye. As I searched through floral patterns and prints, I found an image depicting a girl covered in colorful flowers with her arms outstretched. I placed the illustration inside of a pencil-sketched eye to make the focal point of the image somewhat jarring.

OCs Gone Wild

“Use photo editing software of your choice to splice pairs of pictures into single images.”

For my first assignment from the assignment bank, I chose to do a visual assignment titled “Combophoto.” This visual represents First Year Orientation here at UMW, which is one hectic and stressful time. In the visual are my fellow Orientation Coordinators (OC) and me in our natural Orientation habitat.

I got the idea as I was browsing through photos and came across a photoshopped image of a man with a giraffe neck and was instantly inspired. I thought back to the craziest, most stressful time of my life to represent my inner wild animal. To create this, I took a photo I had of the five of us and looked at animal photos on Unsplash. Once I found the photos I wanted, I used an app on my computer called Photo Editor PixelStyle to layer the cropped animal heads on our heads. After looking at the final product, I could not help but laugh as it truly represented this past summer and immediately sent it to my fellow OCs.

We all have inner wild animals, what’s yours?

Combophoto

A combination of a woman who was blowing bubble gum and someone blowing up a balloon. Not my best, was very difficult.

Flower Popcorn

Original Assignment

This was not the first time I combined pairs of images into one. The direction was quite vague, “use photo editing software of your choice to splice pairs of pictures into single images,” so I just went with what I was most comfortable with—paint. First, I viewed wonderfully creative examples from Stephen McMennamy’s great collection and tried to think innovatively like him. I tried not to “take” his ideas, because it is possible that I very well could unintentionally, and only tried to be “inspired” by his ideas. Next, I thought of things in my everyday life that I can pair together and still make sense out of them. I had caramel popcorn on Christmas so I thought that it would be a fun idea to bring caramel popcorn to life in some way. Third, I searched images for caramel popcorn; while there were plenty, there was one that stood out among the others, which was a cluster of caramel popcorn shaped into a ball. I thought that it looked like a cluster of flowers so I then searched for images of flowers. Finally, I combined two images into one using Paint and I did so by cutting the popcorn image into a ball and pasting them onto each of the flower bulbs.

I thought that the final product turned out quite well, and I am very satisfied that I actually brought my idea to life! The story here is, when giving a present to someone special on Valentine’s Day, why not give him/her a gift that is out of the ordinary yet still makes sense?
