Someday

For the Storify It assignment I chose to retell Snow White in my own way. Skin as white as snow, hair as dark as night, and lips as red as rose and so forth and so on. Storify made it very convenient to find media from several social media sites to create my story I had made a different story originally was was very basic, but after I got the hang of using Storify I went back and tried to create a more complex story.

Maid Robot?!

So I was wandering around the internet this week, and I happened to stumble across this cute maid robot for sale on JList.  Supposedly, this robot can do just about everything for me, and I can program it to do stuff if it can’t!  And it’s only $160!  I’ll never have to do any work again!  This is fantastic, and this should be the last blog post I ever write myself!  So for the last time, Clem, signing off!

Summarization #9

  • The evaluations of The Despicables and Road Trip Radio were actually kind of interesting to do. The criteria really made me focus on how the actual show was put together rather than just the story. I don’t know that if some of the criteria (transitions, effects) weren’t mentioned to me if I would have recognized them on my own.

  • I really enjoyed the web assignments. However, I felt that the choices were very limited. I had a few rough patches with some of the assignments. But, I did  find two that were fun and I could accomplish well. One of my favorite assignments of the class was in this section. The google web adventure assignment was very intriguing to me.

A Web Adventure: 3 Stars

  • For the daily creates this week we had to link them in a story. I briefly had the story in the links between the photos/sounds. But this is the real story…. As I was walking through my squeaky apartment,

frustrated and overwhelmed with work, I came across a dollar bill.

dollar bill

I looked at the back and saw the pyramids and pondered about their significance for a while. As I was think, I thought I needed a vacation. I decided that this dollar bill  was going to be used for a trip to the beach to see the shells and the ocean.

Rocks?

Google Search Story **

” Hello, my name is Greg. I am forty three years old. Single. Maybe not the most attractive, but I love to have a good time. I have a stable career as an engineer. I really want kids of my own. I’m just looking for that special women to spend the rest of life with. I will treat her like the queen she is and give her a comfortable life. Please don’t pass this profile up, I’m not very good a talking myself up. Just met me in person… you’ll see… I’m a catch… promise”

This is my good search story about a forty-three year old man named Greg. You can tell by this dating profile that he is lacking self-confidence. He google searches self-help books. Then, he gets the confidence to sign up for a dating website. He finally gets a response and he is looking for good icebreakers for his first date. He looks up direction to the the meeting spot.  Things go great! One month later, he wants to give this women something fantastic for the chance she took on him. He google search “one month anniversary ideas” . He decides this women is more than just a girlfriends and he isn’t getting any younger. He looks up engagement rings. After they get married, Greg is excited to hear his wife is pregnant. But what he forty-five , only-child, what does he know about baby’s let alone pregnancy…… thank goodness for google!

The other day I found the Harry Potter Original Sorting Hat! I suppose Wizarding World forgot to spell protect this item from muggles. Now, for the first time every muggles get a sneak peak in the Magic Amazon. Fans of Harry Potter will be excited to know that the Sorting Hat is real and, therefore, so is the Wizarding World! Not only will it sort you into your house  by reading your heart, it can conjure the Gyrffindor sword, and it can sort household items like socks. Mrs. Weasley would love this product, think of all the socks she has to sort through (plus they all look a like).

This was a mentally daunting task. However, the “x-ray goggles” is really easy to use and it ended up being extremely fun.  With x-ray goggles, you simply just click and edit. When you are done, you click “p” . Select the html source code, then in your blog domain home page, click file manager.  Create a new html file, copy over the source code, and you are done. It was fun trying to create something only through alteration.

Web Assignment #2

For assignment number 2, I did this one. The Way Back Time Machine is absolutely fascinating. I looked at history.com, because it was the first thing that came to my mind.

history.com-3

This is the first image, from 1996. I took a screenshot with jing and uploaded it to flickr. It’s pretty cool, because it seems to be more of an archive rather than the sensationalized thing it is today. Also, the resolution looks like it didn’t adjust (which annoys me). The colors are also horrendous.

history.com

This one, from 2004, is an interesting one. It appears that the history.com briefly changed the url to historychannel.com, which would be more accurate anyway, since their archive is not especially history-ized. Also, the big red space to the side bothers me a little, but the color is a little better.

history.com-2

This image is from present day. Here it is clear that the history channel has done some serious reworking of the concept of history and has become more like TLC with the entertainment aspect. Swamp People and Pawn Stars sure are entertaining, but are they really deserving of the url history.com? Also, the site sensationalizes itself now, but if you were to type in an actual historical event, they misinterpret it and are usually a bad source.

My story through Google Maps

The purpose of this web assignment was to use Google Maps to tell a story of historical or literary figure. this  was a 3 star assignment as well .

For this reason I chose to talk about two significant  places of Afghanistan Bamiyan and Ghur. I used Wikipedia to get historical information about both Bamiyan valley and Ghur province. I then used Google maps to manipulate the significance of those places. I really enjoyed creating this assignment and I found Google Maps very easy to use.

Bamiyan valley which is one of the ancient provinces of Afghanistan was a Buddhist religious site from the 2nd century up until Afghans converted to Islam and abandoned Buddhism. The valley was dominated by hundreds of Buddhists caves and was occupied by some 5000 Buddhist monks. Bamiyan valley was adorned by two giant statues of Buddha Curved into the side of a cliff in the valley. The statues were 180 and 121 feet high respectively; both of the statues were 1500 years old.

Similarly, the other historical place is Jam Minaret a 65 m tall structure that is bounded by 2.4 km mountains which lies near with two rivers. Jam Minaret is located in one of historical provinces of Afghanistan Ghur.

I chose to talk about these two historical places, because I have always wished to visit these places but I couldn’t; mainly because of the security issues. It is my hope that one day I would be able to visit these places

Gandhi in Social Media

The purpose of this assignment was to use the Fakebook tool to make a Facebook profile for a historical figure and make a fake tweet for the same character using the Twister tool.

Thus, I chose Mahatma Gandhi, because I believe he is a great symbol of peace and unity. I used Wikipedia and some of his quotes.

Then I took the screen shots of both the Fakebook and the Twister created for Mahatma Gandhi with the Jingo.

I believe if the social media existed for Mahatma Gandhi he could approach more people with his message of peace and unity.

YouTube in An Alternate Universe of Niceness

I’ve excited that we brought back the within the web storytelling assignment to ds106- the one where we ask students to use a browser tool to “re-edit” the content of an existing web site to give it a whole new meaning. IN many ways this subverts the web in a playful way that says, I can make this web page tell any story I want:

From the Spring 2011 ds106 class came the idea of changing up an existing web page to tell a new story ” you will be intervening in the code and design of a website of your choice to tell a story. You are not to photoshop the design of the site, but rather intervene in the actual html and CSS of the site—though you can photoshop particular images on the site. Essentially you alter the content of a web page (content, images) to make it tell a new story.

Because this is a new one (or has not been done in a while) and I know some of my students have gotten tripped up on this, I wanted to do an example. I also think it is important to try and alter almost every page element you can, alot of students do the headlines and some text, but the adds, menus, and footers are rich fodder for mucking.

I am not sure the exact path of my thinking of what I could flip on its head (political sites where candidates say honest and humble statements was one thought, but I hate politics). Then I thought about the banality and tripe of YouTube comments, and found my spot- I wanted to recast a YouTube video into one that represented a piece of fine art, where the comments were thoughtful, well punctuated, and… well nice.

In looking at sites that document some of the worst in YouTube commenting it took but a few clicks to land at Sneezing Baby Panda 17 glorious seconds of silly animals caught on video. The stream of comments include:

Wow… The mother panda even got? a fright.

fake

i guess? it’s cute

Haahahhahaaaahhaha?

Why u gotta? say it fake just laugh and shut ur face!!!!

Fake?

How sad, cryptic, and juvenile are tose comments. So here is my remade version of how this video might play ins some alternate universe, Panda Sneezes in E-Minor (that’s the web version)

I found a bunch of art and theater reviews to use as some of my fake comments. I changed the commenters names as well, inlfated the views, and made it have 0 dislikes. Who could dislike a panda? C’mon….

I am super impressed with the versatility of the Hackasaurus tool – activate it as a javascript bookmarklet, and any web page becomes editable. You hover over portions of the page to find elements you can edit, like the title of the video:

Clicking it makes the element editable:

(click for full size version)

Here I can not only change the text that appears on the screen, the html attributes (“alt”) are also available for messing with.

I like that it gives you a sense as to the structures of a page, the divs, etc and how they are fit together. I changed the comments, the commenter names, a few hyperlinks, menu items,. buttons, almost everything in the YouTube interface I transformed. The only thing I could not change was the iframe (clicking it opens the iframe, but I could do that in raw HTML were I so inclined.

The trick then is to hit the “P” button bottom left, this is the publish button.

It is not really publish, but gives you the full HTML to generate the page in one file. What you have to do is copy all of this, then open a plain text editor (meaning NotePad in Windows or Text Edit in the Mac, and paste that sucker in). It should then be saved as HTML (Not sure if this is an option in NotePad, but it is critical in Mac, a few seemed to save their as RTF which then took a big search and replace to get rid of spurious / characters).

Note for Mac Users: Uh oh, we had left off a ket step… After you paste your code into TextEdit, be sure to select Make Plain Text from the Format menu. When you save, use the “.txt” file name it provides. Then go to your desktop, and change the extension to “.html” If you do no do this, all you will see in the browser is code!

These HTML files are a bit big, a few hundred K because Hackasaurus wraps all of the external CSS, JS files a web page might have and folds it into one. You should test loading this form your desktop in a web browser (double clicking should do it). If you see something that looks like the web page you made, good. If you see HTML code, you gotta go back.

From here you can upload directly to your wordpress site via the “Media Upload” button just above the editor box. You select the file, like they way you upload an image. Whatever you enter for Title becomes the linking text, the key is for Link URL to check the box for File URL:, this uploads your HTML file and creates a hyperlink to it

So there you go, with this tool you can bend any web page to be your slave, to be lord and master of its content. Feel the power?

UPDATE Oct 27 As Stephen noted in a comment, the video did not actually play in my mucked page, must be something about the embed code Youtube uses makes sure it is from its own server. This was an easy enough fix with a dive into the HTML, I removed all of the code in the css div

<div id="watch-player">...</div>

and replaced it with the embed code set to the width of that div (700px)

<iframe width="700" height="525" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/FzRH3iTQPrk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Now you can haz sneeze!

Amazon has a new real housewives franchise…

Amazon’s new real housewives.

Yes, I did it. I transformed my guilty pleasure show into a ds106 affair. I used hackasaurus which made it super easy to do. I simply put the X-Ray goggles into my bookmarks bar and went to the page I wanted to edit. I clicked x-ray goggles and voila! I could edit all the text and images I wanted, so I did. I clicked P when I was done, and copied the code it spit out. I put this code into notepad, like cogdog suggested. I saved it as an html file, which worked the second time (ok, maybe third time) I tried it. I hadn’t put notepad into unicode, so it’s understandable. Then I uploaded the file to wordpress by clicking the cool camera imposed on a musical note button at the top of posts page. Yeah, and it works! woohoo! go me! (my first attempt was awful so I deleted it.)

I thought it would be fun to insert ds106 things into a real housewives scenario. I used Martha and Cogdog as the main characters, all in good fun! I think there is also a little mention of DTLT and maybe my friend Kendall! I love the real housewives and I love ds106. I tried to insert 106 into the writing as much as possible. Hence the seemingly random 06 but it does usually follow after a 1!
