Go back in time

So for the pick 1/2 this week, I decided to go with the go back in time assignment. I went to Wayback Machine and found a picture of Google’s website in 1998 which I thought was kinda funny, so I decided to recreate it but base it on myself.

Here is a screenshot from what Google looked like.

and a screen shot from my website Olivia:

The website is halfway functional, I’m not a master at website building so it’s mostly images and only one halfway functional search field, but I thought it turned out pretty good! I used my own domain and wrote my own html and css, and a little bit of GIMP. Took me about an hour to put this together, I had to freshen up my memory a bit, I haven’t worked with HTML and CSS in a while.

Go Back in Time (Week Nine):

Go Back In Time

This week I was asked to complete one out of three options of web design projects. I decided to complete the Go Back In Time assignment. For this assignment, I was instructed to use the Wayback Machine from the Internet Archive to see what websites looked like years ago. Take a look at what several different sites looked like in the 90s to get a feel for the style of the times. Then, create a  website that mimics that style, so information should be historically accurate but creative. While I was doing my research on the Wayback Machine – I began to reminisce about my first experience with social media when I was younger. The first ever social media platform I used was Myspace.com. Thus, I decided to research old Myspace profiles and recreate my own version! Below is the steps I used to create my finished piece:

1. After deciding what I wanted to research, I typed “Myspace.com/userprofile” into the search engine bar on the Wayback Machine.

2. I then went to the year 2008, and randomly clicked on an archive.

3. I came across an old myspace profile template and decided to use the archive for my customization. Note: I did run into a problem at this step though, I tried utilizing the Mozilla X-Ray Goggles, but for whatever reason – they did not work. Therefore, I had to get super creative.

4. I decided to screenshot the archived myspace template, upload it to befunky.com (an online photo editor), and strategically make the template a profile for myself! See the finished product below:

Turning Back the Clock to ’99

As one of my web assignments for this week, I completed the Go Back in Time assignment. For this, I was to find a website using the Wayback Machine and find an old website to mimic. When searching websites, I had a hard time deciding which one to choose, as I wanted to use a theme offered by WordPress that also would mimic the past website. Ultimately, I decided to mimic the AOL website from 1999.

After I decided to mimic that site, I found a theme that roughly could mimic the ’99 sites theme. This was probably the hardest part as the ’99 site is so old looking. However, I found one that was basic; all white with a hint of red, much like AOL’s site. Then, I used Canva to create a logo that mimicked the old AOL logo that is featured on the site. I decided to make the site called ds106 circa ’99, so the logo features just that. Then, I created pages that mimicked those of the old AOL site but related each to the ds106 theme, except for world news and shopping which featured news articles from the year of ’99, as well as the popular shopping sites of the time.

Lastly, I created a post that would appear on the home page of the site, featuring breaking news of me mimicking the AOL website, which to them in ’99, is considered an ‘act of crime.’

Here is the address to the website, so you can see it for yourself!

Go Back in Time

As you probably know, you can use the Wayback Machine from the Internet Archive to see what websites looked like years ago. Take a look at what several different sites looked like in the 90s to get a feel for the style of the times. Then, create a  website that mimics that style, so information should be historically accurate but creative. For example if you choose to style your website after websites in 1998, you could talk about the your new discman or do a movie review of Armageddon, maybe create an AOL chatroom page.
