Can you guess the song?

Favorite Song (1.5pts)

Here are some clips of my favorite songs without the lyrics can you guess what songs they are? (comment if you figured them out)

  • This is one is a pretty easy one:
  • One just for fun:

Nature’s sounds

Imitate Some Weather (1.5pts)

  • I love waking up to the sound of rain so here is my attempt to imitate a thunderstorm. The assignment required items that are used to be within reach, therefore I used a water bottle to attempt to make thunder and a beaded headband I was wearing to attempt raindrops. It doesn’t really sound anything like a thunderstorm or rain but I tried so no judging.

Friday Night in 1 Second

So for this assignment we were supposed to tell as much of a story as we could in 1 second! This is the story of my friday night in 1 second, can you figure out the rest of my night?

The video this assignment was based off of showed amazing, beautiful scenes in 1 second clips – mine definitely does not compare but hey who has an HD camera the exact second an owl is turning it’s neck around!

Movie Scenes

To this day my favorite films are the ones that I liked as a kid especially “Matilda,” “Harriet the Spy,” and “The Little Princess” (no surprise that these were also all books as well.)  I chose 3 scenes from these movies that really demonstrate why they are my favorite and why they resonated so much with me then, and also now.

Maybe it seems silly to some people for little kid movies to be “the movie scenes that changed my life,” but I believe these really did! And I believe that I truly am the person I am today, partially, because of these movies.

Summary of Week 4 – Part 1

So this week we had to summarize what we did from Sunday – Thursday (now).  Basically this week so far has been all blogging and the only real video assignment we produced ourselves was a montage of Twilight Zone episode clips representing what genre we thought a clip was.

So far I have….

1. ‘Read’ a Twilight Zone scene 3 ways: http://clairepatrick.net/ds106/assignments/look-listen-analyze-nightmare-2000-feet/

2. Added examples to the course document of existing YouTube genres and added my own: http://clairepatrick.net/ds106/assignments/the-genres-of-youtube/

3. Found out three interesting facts detailing the production of “To Serve Man:” http://clairepatrick.net/ds106/assignments/the-making-of-to-serve-man/

4. Detailed the genre of the Twilight Zone episode “To Serve Man,” and also made a video montage displaying the characteristics of this genre: http://clairepatrick.net/ds106/uncategorized/to-serve-man-genre-sci-fi/

5. And finally I detailed the pre-production of 2 more difficult video assignments which I will complete for the second half of this week: http://clairepatrick.net/ds106/assignments/pre-production/

Much more blogging intensive this week than any other week, but I like it! I especially liked doing the YouTube genre assignment and I was laughing out loud at the videos I posted so check em out!

I’m honestly really excited to do my 30-second documentary assignment this week, I hope it turns out well! It’s father’s day Sunday so I want to include a clip of my dad in it too :)  If we could do the assignment twice (and I had longer) I would make a 30-sec documentary on what it’s like to be a dad in honor of the day!

Pre-production

Our final assignment for the first half of week 4 in the DS106 zone was to detail the pre-production of 2 more challenging video assignments.  For this we were supposed to have everything needed for production but for these assignments I wanted to use my friends, family, and personal camera so I’m just detailing exactly what I’m going to do. #Idonthavetimeduringtheweektofilmsorryaboutit

The first assignment I chose to detail was “30 Second Documentary,”  which I actually think I’ll be working on this weekend.  This assignment is worth 4 1/2 stars. The assignment is to show a 30-second documentary of something without narration – just showing.  The idea I have for my documentary is happiness.  Tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday, I plan on bringing my iPhone around and shooting people while they are laughing/having a good time/enjoying something.  I’m then going to use iMovie to  put short snippets of these clips together and then overlay a 30 second song, I won’t exactly be sure what song to put until I have the clips but I’m thinking the intro to “Send me On My Way” by Rusted Root. At the end of it I’m going to try to have the song fade out in to someone just laughing – something I still need to look up how to do (I might have to use Garage Band for that).  I can do all of this using iTunes and iMovie and I think it will turn out pretty okay :)

The second assignment I chose to detail was ‘Movie Scenes that Changed Our Lives’ and for this I chose 3 clips from when I was younger that really stuck with me: 1. This scene from Matilda where she is making breakfast (which no surprise is my ideal happy song for my assignment above – I promise I chose that song before I chose to use this scene!) 2. This scene from Harriet the Spy where she is in the Windchime Garden and 3. And finally this scene form The Little Princess where her and her maid friend wake up in a warm bed and eat breakfast together (her best friend is also Harriet’s best friend from the windchime garden clip!)  I’m going to make a montage of these clips on youtube and then overlay the audio of why I like them so much and why they affected me so much when I was little.  This assignment is worth 5 stars.  I can do this all in iMovie.

The Genres of YouTube

So this week we were supposed to check out the google doc for DS106 “The Genres of YouTube” and either add examples to an exsisting genre or create our own.  I was pleasently surprised at how funny/creative the genres were on the document especially: “Kids with Accents,” “Pranks,” and “Everyday Life as Art.”

I wasted a bunch of time watching these YouTube clips, but definitely worth it, however I ddi have to try not to laugh too hard in my cubicle at work!  I added a few examples to the “Pranks” category of the popular prank right now, one of which I have actually done myself, ‘Coning:’ http://www.youtube.com/embed/4jbLiCDaKoI.  I also added an example of the popular prank “Falling in Public:” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBtGAdeTI98. And finally “Fish Slap:” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRDtGnJHksY (I couldn’t find the funniest montage of these so if anyone knows it lemme know)

I then added my own genre which as been really popular lately and dubbed it “Talk Show Host Challenges.”  This is kind of a sub-genre of ‘prank’ but is unique enough to require it’s own category.  There are two really popular examples of this right now which are “Ellen’s dance dare” where talk show host Ellen DeGeneris dared her audience to dance behind random people and get it on film, it’s super hilarious:

An even more popular series of challenges are Jimmy Kimmel’s.  There are a lot of these but the most popular is – “I told my Kids I ate their Halloween Candy:”

and “I Gave my Kids a Terrible Present:”

I think there are probablya lot more of these ‘challenges’ out there (there are definitley more in the Jimmy Kimmel series) so I bet people can add some really hilarious examples to this YouTube genre.

Look, Listen, Analyze: Nightmare @ 20,000 Feet

This week in the DS106 we are focusing on video, and our first assignment was to watch a scene from “The Twilight Zone” and “read” it three different ways.  I chose to analyze the opening scene from the episode “To Serve Man.”  The reason I chose this scene was because after watching, “Nightmare at 20,000 feet,” I immediately found the camera work more compelling.  It was also short and the audio and visual were very distinct.

Analyze the Camera Work:

So I began the episode with the audio off to just focus on the camera work. The scene begins with a fade in from an image of outer space and the camera quickly zooms in on the face of a man laying down smoking a cigarette.  The camera then pans down and then rotates up to reveal a flashing light on the wall which draws the mans attention. As the man sits up, the camera follows his action and shadows are are seen on both sides of the room – the room is dimly lit but there are light sources coming from the left and right sides of the room.  The camera continues to follow his action and then cuts to an image of the man rubbing out his cigarette.  The camera again cuts but this time just to the flashing light on the wall, it cuts again to the man, and again back to the wall, and again back to the man.  As he gets up from his cot the camera stays mostly in the same position but then zooms in on him as he opens a mirror – this is a really interesting frame because you can see his reflection in the mirror looking back at the camera.  The camera pans down as he opens a drawer revealing a sink and then quickly cuts to the flashing light on the wall again. It cuts again and the camera is zoomed out to reveal most of the room.  The camera remains still and then pans up as the man lays back down on his cot, after a short conversation the man seems to be having with himself the scene ends how it started with the camera zooming in on the man smoking a cigarette, the image becomes blurry and the room fades out in to the next scene which is a totally different location.

Analyze the Audio Track

I “watched” the scene again, but this time without any visual. The scene begins with the sound of a mans sigh and then a robotic-like sounding man calling “Mr. Chambers, Mr.Chambers” asking about a man’s preference for food.  There is a rustling sound and the robotic voice scolds the man for improperly disposing of his cigarette.  A loud, frustrated voice is heard. The man and the robot go back and forth a little until only the sounds of a room can be heard, the sigh of the man, the opening of a drawer.  The robot voice says “please conserve water” and splashing can be heard.  The two have a conversation about the time and what time it is on Earth. Most notably in this scene are the sounds of the man sighing and moving around the room.   There is a distinct difference in volume between the robot voice and the man – the robot voice is quieter and calmer while the other man’s voice is frantic and loud.  It sounds like they are a distance away from each other.

Put It All Together

Together the audio and visual components of this scene make it really interesting.  The camera cutting to the light and then the man make it seem like the flashing light is who he is having a conversation with.  The camera cutting to him rubbing out the cigarette along with the sound of it is very compelling and you definitely can’t tell what he is doing just from listening to the audio. Another interesting thing that can’t be appreciated without both elements is the smoke of the cigarette it’s so calm compared to the man’s attitude and is also very visually compelling.  It makes no noise, but with the other audio effects added back in it’s a stark contrast to the scene.

Robert Ebert’s Guide

There were a few things from Ebert’s guide that definitely resonated in this scene:

- “I have the impression that more tilts are down to the right than to the left”

- “Left tilts to me suggest helplessness, sadness, resignation.” –  The camera cut to the light up on the left

- “A POV above a character’s eyeline reduces him; below the eyeline, enhances him.” – Definitely seen in the scene, character seemed a lot larger at the beginning of the scene when the camera was below the cot looking up at him then when it was above looking down.

- “Within the context, you can seek the “dominant contrast,” which is the area we are drawn toward.” – I definitely noticed the stark contrast between the shadows on the left and right hand sides of the screen which I noted when I initially watched the scene without audio.
