Radio Bumper

I used https://freesound.org again to find a background sound. Then I transferred it over to Audacity, and recorded my part of the radio bumper.

I can’t always think of what to say for a radio bumper, I usually go through like 10 different scripts before I find the right one and still this doesn’t even feel right. But I will say, I do enjoy making these audio assignments, like a lot. It’s super fun to make things that I’ve only been listening to my entire life; I just never knew how people made them.

Radio 7 Sound Effects

I really liked doing this because it is kind of it’s own promo. I used sound effects from https://freesound.org and Audacity. I wanted to find sound effects that related to our radio show. I looked up the specific sounds I wanted, and imported them into Audacity. I messed around with each sound because some were louder than others. I also messed with the envelope tool. I think all of the sounds flow nicely together, and they each add their own meaning to it.

Charlie Chaplin: The Lion’s Cage Foley Sounds!

As my birthday is in February, I was tasked with creating Foley sounds for the actions between 00:30 and 01:00 in Charlie Chaplin’s The Lion’s Cage.  Some of the sounds were tough to create with just my body and the items I found around me,  but overall I feel like I accurately recreated all the sounds of the clip.

I identified seven main sounds that I needed to create for the segment: the handkerchief swish, Chaplin’s footsteps, the door opening, the tiger’s roar, the door slamming shut, the lion’s tail swishing, and the water spilling.  The first sound, the handkerchief, was definitely the most challenging to recreate.  I tried several things, such as shaking scarves and other clothing items, but none of them created a sound that I really liked.  The final sound for this action that I settled on was created by rapidly rubbing my hand on my jacket sleeve.  The footsteps were made by hitting one of my shoes against a table in rhythm with the video.  The door opening sound is literally a door opening-I tried to find the squeakiest door possible as the door in the video looked like it would have some kind of squeak.  The tiger’s roar is a very sad attempt at sounding ferocious by me.  For the door slamming shut I went with dropping a flip flop on a table, as it created a better sound than an actual door closing.  The lion’s tail was probably the second most challenging behind the handkerchief in the sense that it was difficult to think of a sound to make.  To make this sound, I simple slapped my hands together a few times.  Recreating the water spilling was probably the easiest sound to make.  I took a cup of water outside and poured it on the ground.

After all the sounds were recorded, some editing was necessary in Audacity to match them as closely as possible to the film.

“Where Will You Be When..?” Disaster Insurance Commercial

Fitting with the theme of our radio show “Where Were You When..?”, I created a commercial for disaster insurance titled “Where Will You Be When..?”.  The premise of our show is about our experiences surrounding various events, and this commercial fits into that theme by offering listeners a way to protect themselves from various events that could have an adverse effect on their lives.  In the commercial, I mention various disasters that the service insures for, such as fire, floods, and raging storms.  These are all real disasters that thousands of people around world deal with on a daily basis, and most people at least once at some point in their lives.  The sound clips that I used include a crackling fire, rushing water, howling winds, and a generic emergency alert sound.  The voice over was done by myself.

DS106 Radio Bumper: “Where Were You When..?”

For the DS106 radio show, each group member was tasked with creating their own radio bumper.  For my submission, I wanted to try my best to capture the essence of what I intended the show to be: a retelling of important historical events from one’s own perspective.  The first two clips feature my voice saying “DS106 Radio” followed by the title of the show “Where Were You When..?”.  To start, I layered the clips with the Hard Limiter effect to decrease the sound of my voice, followed by the Amplify effect to increase it.  I also utilized the Wahwah (yes, Wahwah) effect to add a “Wahwah” (go figure) sound to the recording.  The final effect I used on my voice was the Reverb effect.  I was not really sure how to use this effect, so I simply played with the settings until I was relatively happy with the result.

After I finished editing my voice, I had to decide on the body of the bumper.  I picked three sound clips: the sound of a space shuttle launch, military planes flying, and fireworks.  The space race, and space travel in general were huge events in history which are referenced by the first clip.  It is also the topic of my segment of the show!  The second clip is meant to represent the various wars throughout modern history, which have had some effect on nearly every person in existence.  The third sound, fireworks, could represent many things, such as celebrations of memorable events.

With all the sounds in place, I went ahead and repeated the “DS106 Radio” clip at the end of the bumper.  Even though the bumper was complete, it still felt like something was missing so I picked a blues loop and overlayed it over the entire bumper.

Autotune Something: Rap Cat!

For the audio assignment Autotune Somethingwe were tasked with autotuning something that was not normally autotuned.  I decided that I would autotune a cat’s meow! The inspiration for this idea came from an old Checker’s commercial that a lot of people probably remember which featured a character known as Rap Cat.  I always found this commercial hilarious as a kid and decided to try my best to create a low budget cat rap of my own.  I scoured Freesound.org until coming across a sound clip of a woman’s cat meowing at her for nearly a minute, perfect for what I needed.  I downloaded and imported the clip into Audacity and realized that the cat meows sounded a little bland and boring on their own, so I went ahead and downloaded a generic rap/bass beat (credit to Freessound user Decentyo) and fit it to match the cat’s meowing.  As the rap beat clip was not long enough to cover the entirety of the meow clip, I duplicated and trimmed the beat so that it matched as closely as possible with the cat.

How I made Rap Cat

Once the beat was set, it was time to autotune!  To autotune, I went under the effects tab in Audacity and selected change pitch.  From there, I simply increase the pitch by about 10 semitones, which was a roughly 75% increase in frequency.  This resulted in a persistent and somewhat annoying meow changing into an obnoxious shriek.  Personally, I prefer the un-autotuned version as it is a lot nicer to listen to.  I linked them both below for comparison.

Un-Autotuned Cat Rap

Overall, this assignment was quite enjoyable, and resulted in quite a few laughs during the process of making it.  I love cats, and feel like my audio assignment pays homage to their inner rapper.

Sound Scape: Amusement Park!

I have always loved amusements parks like Disneyland or King’s Dominion since I was little.  With this audio assignment, I really tried to capture the feeling of being fully immersed in the sounds and atmosphere that you would expect to find in one of these parks.  I incorporated various sounds from common theme park rides such as carousels and roller coasters, but also tried my best to include the ambient noise of voices and laughter.  The end result is a very idealistic soundscape of an amusement park.

I downloaded the sound effects used in this assignment from www.Freesound.org, and compiled them in Audacity.

How I made Sound Scape

I avoided using any pitch adjustments or time warps, keeping all of the sounds vanilla.  After editing the sound clips into a desirable order, I published my soundscape on Soundcloud.

Picante Radio: “Where were you when…?” + My Contribution

For our radio show “Where were you when…?”, each group member will be telling their experiences before, during, and after major events (real or fictional) throughout history.  I chose this idea as my favorite after a brainstorming session, and after pitching it to my group members we decided that it would be our theme.  There are so many possible stories that could be told, and countless different perspectives for those stories!  We plan to tell our stories from the first person perspective, even if our story is about an event that we did not actually experience.

For my personal segment, I am going to talk about “where I was” during the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.  Now obviously I was not alive when the moon landing actually occured, so a lot of my story is going to come from my imagination as well as the input of those who were alive during that time.

Apollo-11-moon-landing-4

The main focuses of my 5-minute segment are going to be:

  • Buildup to the launch
  • My feelings and emotions surrounding the landing
  • The aftermath of the landing and its impact on myself and society

Quote 4 my Last Audio STAR

For my final 10 for 10 stars I chose to do Based on 1-Quote-A-Day Project!! by Rimi ‘Kookaburra’ Morita. I chose to do this ‘one star’ assignment because I already had done [9/10] of my stars. (: This assignment was actually a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it! (: I just chose to use one of my all time favorite quotes that is in my room decor(: enjoy!

Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who are alive. ~Howard Thurman

Country Girl, Dazed Father, and a Cranky Mother.

WOW! I had a lot of fun with anagahama’s audio assignment called Multipersonality! [4/10]

For this audio assignment, you had to pretend that you are three to four persons having a regular conversation. I picked a dinner time scenario because that is what is most familar to me, because I try to be home for most family dinners. For my assignment I used a country gal, her dazed father, and her uptight cranky mother. I had a lot of fun with this. I had to edit a lot out because of laughter but other than that I was able to cut enough to make it work. I hope you enjoy the end product of my multipersonality. (:
