Some Poems for Mr. Bemis

So Mr. Henry Bemis liked reading and the such, and it was a shame when he broke his glasses after he had all that Time Enough at Last to himself for reading. Too bad that’s called one tough luck.

But he made an idea to have a contest and write poetry out of just the titles from episodes of The Twilight Zone, and he made it into ds106 Writing Assignment 1071 Poem Made with Twilight Zone Episode Titles.   I saw that he had written poems, and then my True Friend John Johnston wrote a poem in the comments and some more on his blog, and them Mr. Tom Woodward wrote one called “Mr Denton on Doomsday” on his six-million dollar man bionicteaching blog post Twilight Zone Titles Poetry.

All of this got my little brain thinking and so I picked up my iPad and made these poems for you.

The first is sort of autobiographical. Maybe you will get the meaning behind it. It is called “The Whole Truth.”

The Whole Truth

The Howling Man Back There?
Execution!
Dust!
The Grave!!!

Next, I wrote one that tells what it is like to be discriminated on because you are not as tall as you would like to be.   It is called “The Little People.”

The Little People

Once Upon A Time
The Dummy, Caesar And Me, Nick Of Time & The Invaders
The Little People
Five Characters In Search Of An Exit
What You Need? Escape Clause!

Two Twenty-Two
Four Of Us Are Dying, Person Or Persons Unknown
Little Girl Lost.
One For The Angels!

In the end I think it is sad because all of her True Friends are dead. and then she is dead. But it is okay because she is with the Angels because she was so good. And was nice to her True Friends.

Then, I wrote a really short poem. I hope you like it. It is optimistic. and about Friends.  It is called “The Lonely Living Doll?

The Lonely Living Doll?

Young Man’s Fancy!!

So there you have it, Friends. Poetry made by me from titles from Twilight Zone episodes.

Neat!!

Okay. Bye! :-)

P.S. But write me how much you like my poems in the comments first. Thanks!

Twilight Zone Titles Poetry

This is the first #ds106 assignment I’ve done in a long while. The challenge is to write a poem using only the titles of Twilight Zone episodes. It’s an easy one for any English teacher to use as is or to adapt to whatever restricted set they want – chapter titles from a book, band names, Top 40 song titles, scientific names for animals etc. etc. I think more and more that a major part of English class ought to be encouraging students to play with language and then to figure out why they like what they like. Maybe that’s obvious.

Thanks to Todd Conaway for the assignment (official assignment in the repository) and for the work getting the titles in one place. I also took his Word doc and put it in a Google Docs table to help me see more/most of the titles at once and because I dislike having to open programs on my computer these days.

Is The Apocalypse Upon Us?

Mr. Denton On Doomsday

The Fear
The Fever
The Last Flight
The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street
The Four Of Us Are Dying

And When The Sky Was Opened
I Shot An Arrow Into The Air
The Last Flight
The Purple Testament

Dust
Static

The Silence

Roots for Riffing

timelapse_portholeDS106 seems to have got off to a roaring start, perhaps it is the compressed 5 week course but it is impossible to keep up with the flow. The 24 folk at UMW have turned out 127 posts at time of writing!

This is wonderful, not only for just enjoying the flow of ideas but for the invitation to Rif.

Last night I spent a happy hour, thanks to Brian Bennett’s invitation to rif his trip gif to no great result. (I may return, the one on the left took about 2 minutes this morning, but there are a lot better things to do with the material).

Just before bedtime I then read Mr Conway’s Twilight Zone Title Poems where he kick off a new assignment to make a poem out of Twilight Zone episode titles

I commented a quick verse:

A Most Unusual Camera,
Mirror Image, Miniature.
The Whole Truth: Mute,
Spur Of The Moment:Static,
The Silence: Dust.

Which could, with some generosity, be seen as being about the daily create…

Then I fired off another couple:

Night Call
I Am The Night,
Come Wander With Me.
Valley Of The Shadow,
The Bewitchin' Pool,
Sounds And Silences:
The Fear.

Night Call
Spur Of The Moment,
Come Wander With Me:
You Drive.

The second is almost a haiku. THis got me wondering about feeding the words in the titles into some sort of Haiku generator of which there are a few, some with recipes. Also wondering about some sort of auto animated titles from the zone…

Mr Conway kindly provides a doc of all the lines, I’ll pay that forward with a text file: the twilight zone titles.

I saw Todd Conaway’s assignment to make a poem of Twilight Zone titles. At first I tried pulling out titles that rhymed, to see if I could put them together into something that resembled a poem. Then I thought that would kinda forced and lame. Looking through the list, I saw a few lines that reminded me of one of my favorite psychotic dolls (Is he real?). This had been on my mind since I saw Christina’s awesome Invaders gif. So I put them all together into something that’s barely a poem, but it makes sense to me. Watch the tale (on Youtube, in three parts), and maybe it will make sense to you.

Twilight Zone Title Poems

officehours

Today there was a Hangout to say hello and meet the Mr. Groom. It was awesome to see the good folks there. Scott Lockman from way over Saudi way and the Mr. Woodward from right there in Virginia. I was calling in from Arizona and I see that I missed GNA from Chicago. There were a couple students and some questions were asked. As usual, Mr. Groom did all the talking. It was nice to sit around the humming monitor and meet these good people.
Mr. Groom was talking about who this amazing piece of technology was going to work. Then, as if on cue, he said, “Crap, it usually works!” I drifted out and was wandering around making things up. I dreamt of an assignment (based on the old Make a Poem from a Playlist) that asked me to make a poem out of Twilight Zone episode titles. Fun right? You can make one too! Right here! Make sure to tag it WritingAssignments, WritingAssignments1071

I discovered a playlist on YouTube with 62 episodes. I am at work so I can’t watch them all. I am only on episode 31. But here they are.

So I found all 5 seasons of the original titles and placed them on a text document. I was ready to make the poem. But, there are so many titles I could not really write the poem at the top or the bottom of the page without oodles of scrolling. So I ended up with the titles in one window on half my screen and the poem on the other half of the screen. Here is what I got.

Come Wander With Me, Ring-A-Ding Girl
Living Doll, Little Girl Lost
What You Need
The Big Tall Wish
The Midnight Sun
Long Distance Call
The Silence. Shadow Play. The Whole Truth
Once Upon A Time. Person Or Persons Unknown. Young Man’s Fancy
You Drive
The Lonely, The Man In The Bottle

I wondered if I could write complete sentences with the titles. Or place them together without spaces or comas. So I did. Here they are.

The After Hours Twenty-Two, Back There Dust
A Nice Place To Visit Nightmare As A Child A Stop At Willoughby
The Lateness Of The Hour Nick Of Time Time Enough At Last

Here is a link to the titles in a .doc file for easy management.
