Write Yourself into History

13 July 1985, Wembley Stadium

This was the best night ever! We all
went on a vacation to England. We are spending a few days in London and then we
are going to go and see Stonehenge and Bath. Later on, this week we are going
to go to Scotland to see Edinburgh. Last night Mom and Dad surprised me and
David with tickets to the Live Aid concert in London!

Live Aid is the concert series
that is benefiting the people of Ethiopia during the famine. There were 23
concerts in total, so we didn’t go to all of them. We ended up going to see
Queen, David Bowie, The Who, and Elton John. It was amazing to see Queen! They
have been disbanded for quite a few years, and they still have their spunk.
Freddie Mercury was still able to interact with the crowd in the same way.
Their set was amazing! They started off with Bohemian Rhapsody and moved into a
lot of their other hits. They crowd interacted with them so well that the other
sets don’t compare in the same way.

Elton John was also really good!
He is such a hoot; his outfits are completely outrageous and glorious. I love
his music and its really cool seeing him in concert.

The concert tickets and donations gathered during the event will surely help alleviate the famine in Ethiopia. Hopefully there will be enough money left in order to help other countries in Africa. The experience of Live Aid will stay with me forever. This will surely be a once in a lifetime experience.

This assignment seemed like it would be easy, but it proved to be harder than I thought. I knew I wanted to write about the Live Aid concert because it was a defining factor for music in the 80’s. In addition, it solidified Queen’s standing as one of the greatest bands of all time. I grew up listening to Queen, so it was an easy choice to discuss. Writing up this assignment was harder than I thought because I had to think about how I wanted to put myself in that time. Another issue was how was I supposed to explain events like I would in a normal journal.

One Small Step for Man…

July 21, 1969

Today we accomplished something no one else on this Earth has ever done, we walked on the moon. As we were approaching the moon’s surface, my heart was pounding out of my chest. We could see the gray sandy bottom ahead. There was nothing but craters from meteorites that have struck the moon’s surface throughout time. As we were getting closer and closer, I look over at Buzz and he is shaking. I look over at Neil and all he can do is practice what he is going to say as he steps down on the moon. He keeps repeating, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” And continues to ask Buzz and I if that sounds good. Both Buzz and I are too anxious and nervous to respond. We finally touch down on the moon. Everything we have trained and worked for was for this moment. We said a quick prayer and opened the hatch to step down on the moon. We were all so nervous that we almost forgot to bring the American flag with us. Neil was the first one to go and executed his saying back down to the command center perfectly. Buzz was the second one to go and he was freaking out the entire way down the ladder. I was the third one to touch down and at that point all of my nerves were gone because I was so ready to touch the moons surface. As I was climbing down the latter, one foot at a time, I had a million thoughts running through my head and couldn’t believe this was actually happening. I’ll never forget the feeling as both my feet touched the ground. It was so light, so soft, something out of this world, (literally.) As soon as all three of us were out there, we went straight to work. We gathered what we needed to and were off the moon in after about two and a half hours. This has been an extraordinary journey and I’m so proud of my team and what we’ve accomplished with Apollo 11. Now its time to go home.

Write Your Way Into History

Today we sat in Congress again for what seems like years deliberating over the idea of independence. Mr. John Adams of Pennsylvania and Mr. Edward Rutledge of South Carolina held the floor for most of the day arguing about what lines should be taken out of Mr. Jefferson’s piece. Mr. Thomas Jefferson of Virginia has composed a beautifully well- written declaration which we intend to present to King George of England. But some of these men just insist on fighting, which will get us no where. Like Mr. Benjamin Franklin said the other day “If we do not hang together, we shall surely hang separately”. But I guess as being the only women here, I am the only one who understands that things and be solved without arguing. Hopefully within a few days we will closer to signing.

Think of a historically significant event, and write a journal entry as if you traveled back in time to take place in it.
